After hearing Sir Alon's outburst, neruva casually leans back and releases a thunderous belch.
"Ladies, and gentle...dragon? I don't believe our host here is dangerous. And who cares for what reason he hires us? I'm not sure about you, but I'm a blade for hire.
Neruva leans towards Sir Alon.
"I'm sorry if we're coming off as a tad brash, but to be fair, only one of us seems to have any idea who you are. (She glances at Nuele).
I'm willing to aid you, if your purse is willing to compensate.
And you, too, are one of us, and yet you are not. In your words I hear anger, hatred. I see a darkness that is not cold and lifeless, but is alive and moving, like a living entity. I feel caged, trapped, a yearning for escape. --Death Gate Cycle Volume 3: Fire Sea
IC:
Tessa giggles a little at Neruva's absurd belch, but the she replies. "I already said it sounds like fun to me. I wouldn't go for it just for that, but Mister Alon said he'd pay us too, so I'll give it a try." She lowers her voice slightly, so that it doesn't carry to the other tables. "And after all, the game isn't about fighting a few hundred zealots; it's about finding their leader and putting a knife through his eye. Much easier." She looks at Vutha again. "You might have a little trouble with that part, though. Can't imagine you're much good at sneaking."
Also, I apologize for not changing the font for dialogue lately, I'm on my phone and can't quite remember the font tags. Ill figure it out when I get home.
Neruva smiles at Tessa's vicious statement.
"It really is always the little ones. "
She then leans forward, as a negotiator attempting to persuade somebody. With an eager look on her face, she proceeds.
"Consider this, though. What if I don't want to play the game just to win? I'm rather fond of the game itself, and it would be a shame to let all of our opponent's pawns go unscathed before we are victorious."
Vutha just stares at Tessa. "The only skill you need to know I possess is combat. If you think combat is a game, you and I don't have the same skills."
The black dragonkin gives Sir Alon a long, calculating look. "I... accept your offer. War is not a desirable state for the land to be in. None profit, many die, all suffer."
Everything scares me... kitties scare me... squirrels scare me... corpses....corpses bring forth a pletora of confusing feeling which i prefer not to dwell on...:p
"Of course we don't have the same skills. How absurd would that be?" Tessa puffs out her chest, deepens her voice, and assumes a severe expression. "It is I, Tessa, the mighty Halfling Warrior. Face my steel, evildoers!" She looks around the table at each of them, then breaks into a smile. "Doesn't seem such a good fit for me, right?"
Tessa looks back at Vutha and her expression turns serious. "Look. I like to have fun, but I know when it matters. It looks like the two of us will be working together, and I will watch your back. I don't especially enjoy seeing people suffer either, especially not allies; you can trust me to be careful."
She turns to Neruva. "And trust me, it's harder than I make it sound. Rebel leaders tend to be guarded, and their enraged followers chase you after you deal with the leader. You'll have plenty of fanatics to deal with--just not the entire army, if we play it right."
"I trust you all are in this, then." Alon says, reaching to his pocket and pulling out a small bag that makes tingling sounds as it hits the table. "I believe that should cover your travel expenses. Once you are in Barbudas, contact a priest of Deneir if you need to speak with me." He says, standing up from the table. "And one tip for helping you get on the right tracks: Someone was seen wearing a buckle with that symbol on it. It happened in the town of Zgn'gqwulhdzod'szaghdr. In Barbudas."
Alon then proceeds to pay to the nearest waitress and starts to walk away from the tavern.
Halinn's Knowledges:
You see no religious significance in the image, nor any historic facts regarding it come to your mind. No nobles or guilds have used such symbol either. It could depict a creature from elemental planes, or half-fire-elemental-wolf, but it seems more like a symbolical drawing. Your knowledge tells you that fire is often used to signify war. Either way, the symbol must be either ancient or just recently designed, since you lack any real knowledge regarding it.
Halinn recognizes the city name to be truespeak, fairly correctly pronounced but nto well enough to invoke any special effects. You do not recognize the town from memory, though.
The rest of you can try to pronounce it, if you really feel like it. If you don't have ranks in truespeak, either words of creation or the BoVD equivalent, you'll fail.

It'd help me RP more accurately if you'd kindly fill in some sort of physical description for Barek, Id Ego. For the same reason, Halinn, could you give us a physical description of Nuele? I know you want to keep her character sheet private, but this seems like something our characters would know.
"Oh come ON, lion tamer. What kind of talk is that?" Tessa sits up very straight and looks up at the man. "I may not know you, but I'll trust you as far as you give me reason to. We're all in this together, and there's no reason for any of us to backstab the others. We have a better chance of success if we all work together on this, and we don't get paid as well unless we succeed." Tessa thinks for a moment. "Although I would like to know how much is in there. Could you empty it please, Neruva?"
As Neruva opens the pouch, a bunch of gemstones drop out. It is hard to tell their exact value, but by the looks of it it is definitely measured in thousands.
Anyone took Appraise?

Nuele approximates the value of the gems to be somewhere between four and seven thousand. He cannot get more specific without a better way to weigh them.

Sounds like a lot of the shiny stuff to me! Shall we loiter around discussing gems, or shall we get our asses to where we're going. Anybody happen to know the price for the group of us to hop on a ship?

Depending on the quality of the ship and what you are willing to do aboard, the cost would vary from none to a lot. An expensive ride is, of course, rather well protected from pirates et cetera. A cheap ride probably means you are the protection, if any.

For what it's worth, I'm practically drooling for some action with this character. If it was up to me, I'd say take the least guarded ship we can find.
EDIT: ALRIGHT ENOUGH. Time to push.
Tessa looks over at Neruva. "I don't know; I'm not from around here. Maybe we should go ask around, see what ships are headed that way and ask how much they're charging for passengers." She frowns slightly. "I wish I had some number to work from, though. No telling how much they'll overcharge us if they figure out that we're from out of town."
She looks around again, thinking. Her eyes land on Vutha, and suddenly she grins. "Actually, I have a better idea. Maybe instead of playing passenger, we can go play security for one of these ships. If this region is in so much turmoil, any ship would want extra guards, right? And that way, maybe we can save some of these....shinies."
I'm growing pretty bored with this place, now that meal ticket left. I say we head out now and investigate these prices. If we're lucky, we'll be the ones getting paid to protect a ship. Like Tessa said, we can always use a little extra shiny.
With that, Neruva winks at Tessa, turns her back, and proceeds to leave the tavern.

Tessa waves to Neruva as she leaves, then turns back and grins at Nuele. "I can see you and me are going to get along very well. Let's do go investigate these ships....their prices, and perhaps their defenses." She looks back at the other two, Barek and Vutha. "Perhaps you two should find ships we can guard, and Nuele and I can find ones we can be passengers on. Sound like a plan to you?"
Tessa's shouldering her backpack as she says all this.
We are talking expensive on "very rich merchant"-scale. Cheapest boat would be basically free to you guys, but the expensive ones will be expensive even to you.

As Tessa and Nueva send out to find a passenger ship, of which there should be plenty, everyone hears a voice coming from the midair somewhere near them. Sound of a young woman, full of confidence and danger. "Did you notice the "two more"? He sent six letters. They all arrived." Before anyone can react, there is a huge blast of fire where the group stood, engulfing their whole vision in hues of reds, oranges, and yellows, but also something else. Something dark and nightmare-inducing dwells in the flames. Behind the roars of the flames you hear a laugh, not sure if it is the woman or the thing dwelling withing the shadows that is laughing.
When the flames clear, the terror begins to creep in as you see the results of the explosion. The whole deck is blasted to splinters, making you feel surprised that you haven't fallen to water yourselves yet. The flames are spreading, a few bystanders were hit lethally and in the middle of all this is a vile creature, an abomination composed of shadows and flames, standing and breathing in the sulphuric aroma of air.

Tessa reacts so quickly to the explosion that she literally hurtles through the air as she jumps away from it, flying well clear of the blast zone. As soon as her feet hit the ground, she starts moving away from the monster, but as she looks back at it her face contorts in a vicious snarl...
As she was running, a thin film of purplish energy was gathering around Tessa's hands. As she looks back, her hands--and eyes--begin to glow very brightly. The energy sizzles as it discharges, burying itself in the beast.
Tessa has evasion, so she dodges the fireball. I don't know about that point of vile damage, though.
Then she runs 30 feet away from the creature--or as far as she can without falling in water--and fires off an Eldritch Spear. Spell level 3rd.
