Tiran doesn't find out much about the contest, only a few small tidbits. The most interesting thing he hears is that there are apparently four other groups and one individual who are also competing for the lordship of Harmondale.
About the island, he learns only general information, most of which is already common knowledge. The Emerald Isle is a small island that has a small population. Most of the island is uninhabited, and the northernmost part of the island is apparently an unpleasant swamp. As he leaves the general goods store, the owner says "Watch out for the dragonflies if you head that way."

Whoops. I forgot to add that bit in when Margaret was talking.
Just assume she told you that buying the items on the list from stores is a perfectly valid way to gain those items. In fact, I'll go edit it into one of my posts right now.
Also, I'd like the pace of posting to pick up just a bit. Trust me, this is just the prologue. The real good stuff starts after you win/lose the contest.

About the island, Erik gains a rough idea of the geography and the climate of the island. The southernmost point of the island is the only inhabited area. Just north of the town is a series of small, steep hills. One of the groups competing in the contest has apparently camped out there. One group went into the Temple of the Moon, also on the hills north of town, two days ago and hasn't been seen since. The largest group and the only individual competitor are staying at the inn. And one group vanished into the highland wilderness north of the hills yesterday.

Work has picked up a bit. This post took forever because I wasn't sure what to buy, but I think I just decided to get a bedroll + travel rations. I'll figure out their cost + add them to my sheet later. Just a quick post so I don't make us drag any longer.
Disell spends her time in the General Store picking out just a few essentials and chatting away with the owner and other people who come to shop.

I'll bet you wish you had a non-unglued/unhinged card that shared your first name.
The Temple of the Moon...why do I have a bad feeling about that place...this just doesn't feel right... He thought to himself. He went to reunite with his teammates, and share the information he gleaned.
Oh yeah I may have forgotten to share this, while Cale will be active with the RP later on info gathering is not something he is good at this is both for flavor reasons and because of the party composition

Disell learns nothing more than Erik does about the island.
As the group is discussing the information, three glowing red arrows streak into the sky from the east. They each explode in large balls of fire. The light is bright enough to burn through the fog and give the whole town an eerie fae glow for a moment. When the light fades, the whole place seems darker, like the fireballs absorbed what little light there was left in the gloomy afternoon.
Then a deep, rumbling voice rolls over the whole of the island. "The Emerald Isle Scavenger Hunt has now begun."

After contemplating it for a moment, Tiran proposes, "I say we should go to the Temple of the Moon first. It is possible we could find other scavenger items while we search for a tile." After a second of pause, he adds "and I'd like to get there before the others."
"I still want to know why some of the groups have already begun searching when the contest just started." Disell says, pointlessly repeating the same point she had kept bringing up when the group was discussing the information.
"The Temple of the Moon," She says contemplatively, "I'd rather go there last with the disappearances we've heard about, but you're right that it would be the best bet to win if we go there first."

"I don't know much about the Temple of the Moon, I'm afraid...uh...all I know is that before the Gods we know, there was the Church of the Sun, and the Church and the Moon. They were constantly at war, and then...yeah..." e said with a slight shrug. He then adjusted his glasses. "Did anyone pick up a healing potion from the shops?"

Just as the group is about to head north, a man steps out of the mists. He's a pretty small fellow, middle-aged and balding. His clothes are simple and plain, though well-made. He really doesn't stand out in any way, except for his eyes. Half-closed, almost sleepy looking, but they dart about and you get the feeling the man misses absolutely nothing.
He smiles at the group and bows slightly. "Pardon me, but I couldn't help but overhear you. My name is Mr. Malwick. Before you go off to the Temple, I have something I'd like to discuss with you. If you're willing to hear me out, of course."

Tiran grips the pommel of his sword in unease, keeping his shield lowered in his left hand. "Certainly..." he says, with a cautious tone. Just who is this guy?
Mr. Malwick smiles. "I understand your caution, but I assure you there's no need for it. I simply wish to help you win this contest. You see, I represent a small group of investors who have been interested in starting up a business in Harmondale for some time. Unfortunately, Lord Markam isn't one to let anyone but himself turn a profit."
Mr. Malwick shrugs. "He has repeatedly shut down our attempts to settle in Harmondale. But this contest presents me and my associates with an exciting opportunity."
Malwick clasps his hands together. "So, on to business. I am willing to help you along in Markam's little scavenger hunt. In exchange, you allow me and my parterns to set up our business in Harmondale if you win. Unfortunately I can't guarantee you'll win, even with the help I can offer. You'll still have to compete. I can simply make things easier for you."

"Please, allow us to deliberate this proposition," asks Tiran, motioning for the party to step away a fair distance. He relaxes his grip on the longsword, but his shield is still in hand. "What do you all think? I don't like the feel of it..."

He then waits for the others to finish their shopping, getting a feel for his new shield in the meantime.

As far as Erik can tell, Malwick is on the level. He appears entirely sincere.
