Nightveil Park is a mysterious place. There is an enchantment on the park that makes it always evening in beautiful garden. All of the pathways that wind through the area are lined with glittering silver poppies that emit a soft glow. Fireflies flit between the leaves of the trees, making them appear to be lighted up through magic. In the southern corner of the park was a glassy pond that was filled with strang fish that darted around under the surface, creating their own florescent flashes of light.
Shalin couldn't believe how beautiful the park was--lit up like it was night, even during the middle of the day. The strange insects distracted her for a while before she shook her head and started looking for signs of this black beast.

A mere ten days after the Mending, a young knight of Valeron and a young ranger of Eos made a discovery that would change Alara forever.
As it turned out just as she was walking along admiring the fireflies, she saw a large indent in the earth. Upon further inspection sh saw that it was a large canine footprint. The ting was as big around as her hand and there were a couple more leading into a thick group of bushes to her right.
Shalin examined the footprints, their size about right for a quadruped the size the man depicted. She looked around the bushes to see if there was any alternate path near them, or an idea where the creature that made them might have gone.

There was no other signs of the creature from what she could tell.. Perhaps closer to the bushes but not from this distance. The bushes could be approached head on or from either side.
Shalin approached the bushes from the right side, being careful to make as little noise as she could, despite her excitement. She certainly had to hold back being jittery--there would be time for that later. Now, though, there was a hunt going on. It had to succeed.

As she got closer to the bushes she could see tufts of black fur caught in the branches. As she made her way through the bushes she didn't see much else.. Until she reached the other side of them. She saw another set of tracks leading towards the far side of the park, towards the pond.
The eager girl followed the tracks, taking her close to the far park boundary. She kept her eyes peeled for fur that matched what she saw in the bushes, also looking for good aerial ambush points in case the opportunity arose.

She reached the pond and lost the tracks. There were a few trees around the pond, and a an area with a bit thicker brush in the fenced corner of the park, at the back of the pond.
Shalin looked for the thickest, most sturdy branch among the trees near the pond, looking to take a position on top of a fairly low-lying one. Maybe she'd be able to see into the suspicious-looking corner of the park from a higher vantage point, as well as get an idea of what good hiding spots there were. Whatever left that fur in the bushes before had to be pretty big.

From her higher vantage point she saw a dark shadow among the thick bushes in the corner. If that was her beast, it didn't seem to be going anywhere. It was either sleeping... Or hunting.
Now seeing where her target was, Shalin tried to see which direction the creature faced. Perhaps she'd be able to climb down and approach it from behind instead of from above, if it was sleeping. A closer view might be able to identify it, too.

It was hard to tell which way the shadow was oriented from this distance... but there was another tree that was much closer. The only problem was that it was close enough that she risked alerting the beast if it wasn't sleeping.
Shalin thought of one way to check whether her quarry was asleep or not--she broke off a small end of a branch that looked a little more dead than the rest. She dropped it halfway between the base of her tree and the bush she saw the shadow in. She figured if it didn't notice what was going on, whatever was inside was asleep and she'd be able to approach it more closely. Best case, she'd lure it right underneath her current position.

Unaware of the shadow moving, Shalin carefully climbed down from her perch, looking to get to the tree closer to the black beast as silently as she could. As she passed, she kept aware for indicators of whether it was asleep, hunting, or doing something different.

There didn't seem to be any indication of awareness from the bushes. After climbing into the the tree, Shalin could she the shadow, was in fact a rather large warg. From what she could see, the beast seemed to be sleeping from all accounts. Although she didn't know what level of intelligence she was dealing with. The warg was wearing a pink collar, so there was every possibility that it had been trained.
Never having seen such a large warg before got her heart racing. What a rush it would bring! Knowing what she was up against, she knew she could get relatively close. If the bushes weren't blocking it too much, she looked for a good angle, whether from above, behind, or from one side, to ambush it and hop onto its back before it was aware she was around.

Noticing the small path through the bushes, Shalin quietly followed it, looking to get into place aboard the warg before it noticed her. One false step could be dangerous, but the reward of a wild rush was worth it to her. At least it looked like it wouldn't be too hard to get a good hold on.

Just as Shalin was almost close enough to board the huge warg, her foot came down on a branch producing a snapping sound. The beast tensed and lifted slightly, growling.
With the beast riled up and her cover blown, Shalin instinctively reached for the warg's back and tried to jump into place, knowing she had to get there immediately if she wanted to hop aboard. She was still right next to it, right...?

Shalin at first wasn't in a great position aboard the black warg, but she was appreciative of how thick its fur was. She'd be able to hold on fairly easily. The only thing concerning was she wasn't all the way on yet. All she needed was for the warg to make a turn, and she could use the momentum to swing her leg around and actually sit on its back.

They were speeding along at an alarming rate when a startled noble happened into their path. The warg veered sharply to the right and continued to sprint.
