Reed motions for Strathalmere to follow and sets out down the hall, making sure the fanatics have turned the corner. He then crosses to the training room and pokes his head in the door.

I spun them a little bit of a story and now they think they've got reinforcements waiting in the spectator's cage, but I doubt that will keep them occupied for long. Friend Korvat, it would be lovely if you could join us as well. Oh! And Paravrax, why don't you accompany us as well. Strathalmere and I will take up the rear as he's not looking too good."
I can understand that Starfall and Luan were hiding out of sight, but how did the cultists miss me running back and forth grabbing Paravrax and Korvat like 20 feet away when they went from Room 7 to Room 3? I was fully expecting to run into combat around there. I can roll with it since we have several posts establishing that the cultists passed by, just confused.

Lucial has entered Room 24. This room is part of the temple's crypts. The room is very dark. There are sconces along the walls, but there are no torches or light. The eastern and western walls are lined with plain stone sarcophagi--five on the western wall, seven on the eastern wall. There are two ornate iron doors on the western wall. On the north wall, there is an opening leading to a corridor that heads west, and a locked wooden door.
Eight of the sarcophagi are open. Eight zombies shamble silently around the room. They don't appear to have noticed you yet.
As the group draws near the divination room, you hear the female cultist shout, "Osrik's pendulous ballsack, what happened in here?" "Is that the crazy spectator?" the male replies. "The dwarf must have had friends with axes," the female says.
As long as GMom doesn't mind, I can run Emeryn as an NPC while he's gone. It should make the next couple of fights survivable.
Reed moves up to the edge of the hallway and peeks around the corner. Looking back at the group, he whispers: "Nothing flashy. Just kill them. Anyone with range, pick off the injured one first, then fighters rush the remaining one. If you're injured, back away immediately."
He gives them a moment to prepare a weapon of their choice, then counts down on his fingers to a combined surprise attack.
In coordination with everyone else, Reed tosses a dagger at the injured cultist:

For surprise attack, I'm going to use my last level 1 spell slot to fire a ball of lightning at the injured cultist. This leaves me with just one level 2 spell slot before I am all out and need to rest.

Do you have silence, by any chance? That'd be a great way to screw the cultists - the moment our melee guys engage, we prevent them from casting spells by casting silence. I would do it, but I really need my Level 2 slot to put in the ring in order to keep us alive later.
I don't. My spell list is somewhat slapdash and needs to be improved as I level. That said, I'm not sure I actually saw Silence as a spell I could choose, but I can check later.

Next level, I'll be adding Misty Step and probably will get rid of Crown of Madness in favor of something else, but am not sure what yet.
Sure. Raising the portcullis takes a Strength check, since you're moving against gravity and resetting the mechanisms. Lowering it is just a simple lever pull to release it, then gravity does the rest. I'd call pulling the lever "manipulating an object" which is clearly on the list of things that can be Mage Handed.
For combat with the cultists, everyone gets a surprise round, followed by actual combat. For simplicity's sake, we'll roll new initiatives for everyone.
Jay, were you intending for me to use my surprise action for the Mage Hand and then reroll to use the spell during round 1, or lock them in during round 1? Keep in mind that my orb should kill Fanatic 1 outright, unless he's healed himself.

Heedless of her companions' possible intentions regarding gates and levers, Emeryn rounds the corner and charges straight for the fanatics within.
With initiative as listed, I guess Reed, Strathalmere, and Paravrax can take turns stepping to the mouth of the hall and shooting (it appears to be at least 50 feet from the main hall to the center of Room 2). Then I guess Emeryn will just Dash all the way down the hall to close with whoever is left standing, unless someone stops her by that point. IIRC, Korvat can dash in and take a swing as well, but I can't.
Unless we get all the way into the room and move to the side slightly, our ranged attacks are going to have at least partial cover due to people stuck in the hall, as far as I can tell from the map in #821.
Edit: This is for round 1. The Dagger throw (and miss) was my surprise Round action.
Nah, I wish I had thought of that first though. I don't have Mage Hand, so it didn't occur to me until we already initiated combat. Lets just kill them, one is almost dead and we should pretty quickly dispatch the other (hopefully). Maybe I should take Magic Initiate at Lvl 8, for Mage Hand and Eldritch Blast, and some other Level 1 Spell I wouldn't have access to. I'm thinking that would be seriously worth it, at this point. Mage Hand would enable so many shenanigans.
