BRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRING!!!!!!!!!!
Finally the bell rang, signaling the end of another long day. About time too. The only thing pretty much anyone was talking about was how they had survived Armageddon, as if it were a big feat given the worst that happened was an inch of rain here, and a minor earthquake in California that barely registered on the scale. Everyone sold all their stock market shares yesterday preparing for the worst; but bought it all back upon realizing just how stupid such a thing was resulting in a giant amount of nothing changing. That was the Armageddon everyone had survived.
In Shalin Mallery's mind, it would have been much more impressive had said armageddon been one-sided.
Still, finals were coming up in a week or less, and the teachers were still piling on homework, so there wasn't much time for anything except homework and studying; ignore the fact that 95% of the stuff taught she'd never use as an adult. So if it not for her parents' constant support, school would be one thing she'd be fine living without.
"Hey Malladjusted! did you fall in a paint can again or is that just your shirt?" Oh yeah, the bullying. That was another thing the girl could live without.
The high school cheerleading squad had become particularly virulent (but not that virulent, Shalin thought to herself) in their verbal assaults on the girl in the past few months, for what seemed like no reason at all.
"Oh by the way, your indian village called, they want their ☺☺☺☺ back!" That was certainly a low blow, but then again the cheer squad acted like they ran the place, and there wasn't a single person around willing to tell them otherwise (those who did tended to be expelled, as bags of crack had strange ways of "appearing" in the lockers of students who spoke up). Right now the only thing the girl could try to do is ignore them and get on the bus; the gaming club wasn't meeting until after Winter Break anyway...

Shalin shot her aggressors a mean look before stomping out of the student commons and out the school doors. She took her seat in the back third of the bus and pulled out a blue pocket folder. She pulled out some stapled sheets of paper, the front page a colored doodle of a primitively-dressed girl petting a saddled cheetah. "At least I have a tabletop to look forward to tonight," she thought as the engines revved up, and the driver pulled away.

A mere ten days after the Mending, a young knight of Valeron and a young ranger of Eos made a discovery that would change Alara forever.
As the bus pulled away from the school, Shalin absentmindedly checked her cell phone out of habit, not expecting it to spring to life! Apparently she had a voice message.
"Hey, it's Matt...listen, I know this is sudden but my parents found out about my chem test, so I'm grounded...needless to say no game this week. I'll tell you about it tomorrow, but nothing going on tonight, sorry."
Well, that certainly put a damper on the girl's plans. Now all she has to look forward to is homework and more verbal abuse from the internet...to say nothing of the weather, the sky might open up any second now.
"hey! You getting off or you trying to run from home?" Apparently the bus got to your stop already, and a lot quicker than you thought. The bus driver is an old lady, one who really doesn't like people not being ready. Tack that on to the people who are getting on Shalin's nerves...

"Alright, already!" Shalin shouted as she stepped off the bus, along with a handful of other people. The driver seemingly stomped on the gas pedal after letting everyone off. The teenagers dispersed, Shalin looking over her character sheet and art again during the walk back. "And one of the big plot reveals was supposed to happen today, too. I wonder if my folks are even home at this hour."
The walk seemed extraordinarily long. Though she had plenty she could do, a frown crossed her face the entire way back.

Normally Shalin's mom is home, she works at home, some minor stock trading. (she, like the few *smart* people in the world, held on to her stocks and pocketed a small bit of change.)
However it seems the door was locked. Shalin has her house keys so that's not an issue, and on the kitchen table is an explanation as to why the house is empty.
Shalin--
Mrs. Archer's dog got tagged in a hit and run, so I'm with her at the animal hospital. Will be home as soon as we're done there; call me if you need anything.
--Mom
Well, there weren't many things that really pissed Shalin off. Animal cruelty happened to be on that short list. The girl could almost feel her blood boiling, before slowly calming down. It was tough to do so, but some slow breaths cleared her head.

Another text message, this time from dad.
"Hey shalin, could you rake leaves in the backyard and put them up front? I'll pay you double."
Well, at least it's somethign to do, but probably not what you wanted. Still...cash is cash, especially if it can go towards a down-payment on new sourcebooks.

After reading the notes from her folks, Shalin slammed the door to her room shut, throwing her good clothes in a heap in the corner. She changed into work clothes and stomped back upstairs, out to perform the requested task. "The one day I need to get away from life, I can't. And then everything else goes to #&^$." The extra vigor from her anger let her start the leaf-blower with one pull--a rarity for the old tool. "Of course, he would skip the blowing part altogether and just light the leaves on fire. But that's him."

Well, that's the difference between fiction and reality; as much as the girl would like otherwise. The feeling was only perpetuated by a sudden gust of wind whipping up the leaves into a kind of cyclone that enveloped Shalin for a few seconds before passing. As for the leaf blower...the thing was always unwieldy in shalin's hands, she might as well be herding cats just as much as it would be leaves.

Shalin has no clue how it happened. But for the first time the leaves seemed to not attempt to make her life a living nightmare. Even though some of the leaves were damp and would cling together, she'd never imagined they'd act as if they're glued together. Certainly strange but it gave her more time to brood.
Back inside, Shalin had yet another text message (her parents' wireless plan had unlimited text messaging, even though Shalin never used any save to her parents.)
"Mrs. Archer's dog is gonna have to stay the night but he's gonna make it. Dad's making surf'n'turf tonight, can you make sure the steak and crab are out of the freezer? be back in 20."
Well, that's a happy ending to one story, and although the leaves was certainly an anomaly the thought passes quickly, she's got some more things to take care of.

Shalin almost placed the meat on the opposite side of the kitchen, distracted by how easily she was able to clean up the back yard. It normally took her double the time it did today. Even on her best day, she'd never even dream of getting the yard done that quickly.

You know what? it's a ton of busy work and most of the teacher's aren't even gonna check it. You can do that crap later. Right now you've got berries to pick on your pokemon run, EV's aren't gonn adjust themselves...
As you rush to your room, you notice the family planter, and it slowly dawns on you that it's your month to water the geraniums.
So far you haven't.
Funny how you can remember to water berries thrice a day in a video game, but in real life a plant will go neglected for two weeks if it doesn't provide something useful. You should probably do what you can to fix this.

As she started her assigned watering, it also dawned on Shalin that she had been neglecting her own portion of the family gardens, though for not nearly as long. Though her folks had repeatedly told her that procrastination bites back, she wouldn't listen to anything but first-hand experience.

Your parents have been ragging on you to make sure you take care of the plants, but if Shalin doesn't want to do anything, there's not a lot that's gonna change her mind. Picking up one droopy leaf, you reckon the thing had probably been dead for a while.

Shalin simply left for her room, shrugging on the way there. After closing the door, she breathed a sigh of relief, then tried to get her mind off this weird incident with some obscure console RPG she hadn't played in a while. The druid in her current party, which was required for the story at that point, kept her mind on the strange occurrences.

They certainly were strange occurances. First the leaves cooperating for the first time in...well, ever; followed by the plants springing to life after you watered them. What was happening to her?
Well...there was a good deal of wind in the backyard (good thing Shalin doesn't wear skirts that often) so that might have helped keep the leaves sticking in a single pile back towards that fence. As for the planter...well, it could be that her mom did a switcheroo on the whole thing and was trying to guilt you into admitting you hadn't watered the plants at ALL.
*ding*
Shalin's druid gets another level up, and then a strange, but impossible thought comes to her.
What if she's doing this?
What if, through some random combination of the sun's alignment, the time of year, and some other cosmic BS...what if she could control plants and stuff just by wanting it?
It's impossible, of course, and Shalin is grounded enough to recognize it. But only just so, her imagination is swirling with all different kinds of scenarios in which she could make the very earth rise and do her wishes...it would be great to pretend, right?

There was a lot of action going on on the old CRT screen in the girl's room. Suddenly, the room got very, very bright. It took the girl a minute to realize that someone had turned her overhead light on. That someone happened to be her dad.
"Hey, dinner's ready. Don't want you starving to death just because you're too absorbed in your gaming. Come on, wash up and get downstairs."

Tonight's dinner was pretty filling, courtesy of Mssrs. Hillstrand and the rest of the Time Bandits. Shalin had seen the show a few times but fishing wasn't really something she cared about that much.
After dinner, it's pitch black out, despite not being much past 8. Playing her video games will be possible but she knows that sleep will start to kick in fairly soon. So she really shouldn't stay up *too* late.

Sleep takes a while to kick in, but once it does, the girl finds her rest quite peaceful. It's a soft sensation of warmth, perfect for a chilly night like this.
With the morning sun's light filtering through the canopy leaves, Shalin wakes up and stretches her...wait a minute...
At this point it hits the girl; she's not in her bed. Hell, she's not even in her house. She has no clue where she is, only that it appears to be some kind of forest.

It's almost like she's seen this landscape before, although she can't place where. It's not from that game she was playing...right? It's really hard to tell for sure...
In checking the girl's surroundings, she also notices that she's back in the clothes she wore the day before. Which is another oddity she can't rightly explain.
Regardless, she needs to figure *something* out, because there doesn't appear to be anything other than plants around here. Not even a squirrel or something...

She had dreams of this sort on a regular basis, so "waking up" in a forest was nothing new to her. She took in her surroundings, looking for the nearest sign of non-plant life. After an unknown time of wandering, she realized what was happening was very real. Being in her clothes from yesterday in the exact same condition they were in was a tell-tale sign of it.

Well, this was a fine mess...after so much wandering, Shalin knows only one thing: she's good and lost now. She doesn't feel hungry or thirsty, or tired, but there's no way to tell how long she's been stuck in here. Panic setting in, convinces the girl to simply stop. Sit down, relax, see if something can happen. You have no idea how you got in, so maybe if you just wish it, maybe you can get out.
"Hey! What are you doing?"
A voice.
A human voice, at that.
It took Shalin a few seconds to realise where the voice was coming from: above her. A girl is sitting on a tree branch, apparently whittling or something. From what you can tell she seems to be about your age, maybe a bit older. You have no idea who she is or why she's here, but she has to know *something*...right?
