Also, I mentioned this in the spec chat, but a big drawback for town in this game was that SO many of us (myself included) were very inactive on D1. This basically let DCIII and Meg control the discussion and pace of the entire game.
I don't have any hard numbers on this, but I'm targeted more often than a black guy driving a beat-up sedan with a broken tail-light and no license plate, and Cy's well aware of that.
My reasoning for doing so was because I thought he was a very strong lynch candidate D2 (not to mention multiple day-opening votes on him).
You had no way of knowing this, but yes.
I knew that the Undying couldn't have been void/antny, and I knew it had to include Kosa, but this would have let there be two options rather than just one from POE.

Guessing game should have targeted
busdriver/redirecter roles are pains in the ass for the player who receives them
custom role names for everyone in the future
-----------
Okay, here's my thoughts.
The Neighborhood:
I've noticed that personally, I don't have as much fun in games where I land a vanilla role, and I assume that ti's the same for most other people as well. As such, I tried to avoid having any true vanillas in the setup. The Neighborhood was a way to have people feel like they weren't vanilla, without being overly powerful. Unfortunately, the whole thing got devoured by modgaming on D1, and was probably instrumental to the scum's quick victory.
Lesson: assume the worst-case scenario will always happen. The neighborhood cost the town a lynch and two vig shots to resolve -> unacceptable.
The Undying:
When I originally hatched the idea for the game, I wanted every role in the game to be a variant of undeath...either capable of bringing themselves back, or someone else. I thought it was relatively unexplored territory design-wise, and it seemed interesting to look into. AI and Iso pretty quickly talked me down from that idea, but the 3 core Undying concepts that I was working with stuck around and formed the core of this setup.
Phylaxis (note: the name was derived from Phylactery, as in a lich.....PROphylaxis only pointed out the similarity when he replaced in) was too strong. I underestimated the amount of knowledge that he would have from the rolecop + just being a scum, and that let him get his ability off too early. I was aiming for a Night 3 ultimate scenario.
Al-Jiraq was vastly too weak. His ultimate was bananas, yes, but it wasn't how it needed to be constructed. In a N3 ultimate scenario by 2 or even all 3 Undying, the extra lynch would have never even come into effect because the game would be over on at dawn of Day 4. His ult should have been something that preempted Phylaxis's and/or helped with the scenario of the Nameless leaving the game.
The Nameless was far and away my favorite, and continues to be. I don't think that Kosa quite understood the role (eating Deathjoey's corpse really didn't have any drawback for him, and wouldn't have consumed his N2 action), but some of that is likely my fault....I probably didn't express the role clearly enough in the PM, and Kosa never asked. I will confess to an oversight that Plum pointed out, though -- which is that in an endgame scenario, the Nameless's triggered ability would actually kill him if he even used it once, which accidentally put him all-in on the guess plan and would have made it impossible for him to use any of the abilities he devoured.
Lesson: make sure that "ultimate" abilities are more balanced against each other in the future -- assume that multiple players will unlock their abilities at the same time.
The Guessing subGame:
I made one hardcore fail here. I should have made the Guessing Game target. Ie, if Meg guessed Void and Kosa, then those guesses should have been targeted abilities which could be Watched and busdrove. That would have removed a lot of the swingy power from the Undying roles, and returned some power to the watcher/busdriver slots, which were probably just too weak.
Lesson: make sure that all possible scenarios and synergies between roles are fully considered, lest opportunities be missed.
The Busdriver Problem:
I had this role (also named Busdriver) originally in my first-ever mafia game, so it remains one of my favorites. However, if I'd reflected on it properly, I would've remembered that I had the exact same problem that DJ experienced when I received it: I claimed it, and nobody believed me / everyone considered it a botched claim.
Lesson: from now on, make custom role names for everybody so that this confusion doesn't arise again.
--------
Other, general lessons:
Lesson: be more aware of how much time has passed on a day, and explore other games run by experienced hosts to see how long a day should last.
Lesson: institute a prolonged Twilight phase to cover either my weekend absences or sporadic incidences of writer's block / real-life syndrome.
Lesson: be better about Night action deadlines. TMCT was perfect with this in Astarte, where he linked to an online clock of some sort with the exact timer for when the deadline hit.
--------
Other, general thoughts:
This setup would have probably worked much better as a specialty/FTQ with more player slots. Unfortunately, Specialties have approximately infinite queue times, so it would've been a choice between running a better game months/even years in the future or running a lesser game sooner. Considering my lack of experience and the various lessons I learned, I'm okay with my decision. Even if the setup had worked better as a specialty/FTQ, I wouldn't have been a good enough host to pull it off, and learning these lessons now and not then is worth.
The Busdriver was the doc equivalent, and the JoaT was the cop equivalent. These, along with the 2-shot vig, were considerations as a result of having 3 bulletproofs in the setup. iRebel's shots were correct, I think -- but they shouldn't have been necessary. This goes back to the Neighborhood problem as above.
Even despite the various issues that I faced, I had a lot more fun hosting the game than I have had actually playing a game in a while. I've definitely got a few ideas for my next setup, and will be beginning work on it probably by the end of the day. You probably won't see me in many games in the future....I'll save my energy for hosting, since I really enjoyed that.
I still really hate the new forum software. I'm actually writing this post (and wrote all of my flavor) in a text editor program because I can't write any posts of any kind of length at all in the new forum. Only having a "quick reply" sized window is bull*****. I miss the full, go-advanced screen.
I don't even want to talk about the move situation with the PM glitch. I hope that I handled that well enough for all concerned parties, but that was not something I was prepared for in my first hosting game ever. Additionally, while I understand in reflection why Megiddo was mad at me, his comments at the time really hurt. Thankfully it was a misunderstanding on his part, but it still had me running scared for the rest of the game since I didn't want to screw up any more.
That's about it for me -- there's probably specific questions or comments that I'll need to reply to, but these are -my- thoughts on things.
It is just plain amazing to me that the scum team won before D3 WITH A FAILED NIGHTKILL!
I totally understand why Arian thought he should have a multi-shot vig (see spec chat), but I think this game is a perfect example of just how many things can go wrong for town with more than a single extra kill in a 12-player game.
I don't think I have ever played as poorly as I did here, and that includes D1 of Smalltown. Going into N2, there were only 5 players who could realistically be scum, and I was firmly convinced DCIII was town and had a strong town read on masterplum.
Yeah, seconded on the claim issues, I was pretty scared about that though I thought I'd come up with one.
Inactivity was the Town killer. Sorry to Rez for dogging you, I think I'd have done the same anyway until you had your big post where you responded to everything - I would have likely believed you then and almost decided to change course but then I figured if I could get DK to verify it and he wasn't overly adamant about it then could keep pushing forward.
I think that Day 2 went about as well as it possibly could have for us. I had Void pegged as undying from his D1 play but Kosa had me fooled until we tried to kill him, but pretty much all of the roles except those of the scum team were out in the open after that Day.
Also, I had some class A paranoia N1 of the scum chat. Meg never posted his role PM and was acting... Meg-y... and I got a weird suspicion that he was out to kill all of us as some kind of immortal evil super villain... got over that eventually. Also thought Kosa had breadcrumbed vig and that I was toast. Fortunately, neither of those things were true and my paranoia wasn't founded. Shooting Kosa actually worked out well because it let us unlock the undyings.
@DK - your reads were off but your plan around the DJ situation was a good one and I thought your play was pretty Townie. DJ had very good reads this game but didn't have enough cred to push them.
I think the big issue here was the whole extra NK thing, I assume iRebel (or any vig) would be a lot more cautious about shooting if the possibility of a scum win is on the table. I can't see any real warning signs that the town was potentially at MyLO on Day 2 and I kinda feel there should have been.
DKingsland I did need you to reveal PM sometime during the day (my ability was one shot so I was pretty much forced to fire when I did) but I was sorta hoping you would held back a bit longer. So yeah, awkward as it was, if you hadn't revealed I would have told you to out your result anyway before we went to night. You really didn't have a right choice in this case.
I don't have any hard numbers on this, but I'm targeted more often than a black guy driving a beat-up sedan with a broken tail-light and no license plate, and Cy's well aware of that.

Arian, MVPs?
Your paranoia N1 had me in fits laughing. Quality entertainment there.
I'll think on MVPs a little and get back to that later this afternoon.

Frankly, I blame the town for this. They should've focused on behavior instead of horrible Day 1 claims and modgaming.
Oh, I 100% agree that it was the town's fault. That doesn't change the fact that it happened, and that I should be better prepared in the future to protect against something like that happening.
I would have advocated that iRebel not shoot DK as Town too, Meg did you really think that was the best play or were you just playing off of me there? I thought that shooting DK was an awful idea for the Town because his play was very clearly Town most of the game but certainly D2.
I would have put more effort into actually doing behavior analysis as town. Given my information at the time I would have been interested in shooting dkingsland.
I WAS invested in making sure that iRebel shot somebody that I knew would die and wasn't us.

/barn 100%. People are just assuming too much lately.
Regarding my role: I understood it. It was exactly why I would only eat a role of utmost OPness, like a vig or a cop or whatever. I told you so in the PM: eating the redirector at that point of the game was pointless and actually detrimental, considering how it would reduce my lynch threshold on a Day that I could possible face scrutiny.
Then again, I can only blame myself for not being so involved in this game (or maybe in Mafia in general). I knew there was something strange going on DCIII but didn't bother looking into it. Meh.
That said, GG scum. I don't think this is a case of swingyness as much as it was a case of a letargic town + strong scumteam + unnecessary claims + pointless modgaming. I had my good share of fun... DESPITE STILL BEING COCKBLOCKED A SCUM ROLE
No seriously. I think I may be approaching my 20th game of Mafia and I've been Neutral-aligned 3x more than I've been scum. It's unnerving.
In retrospect the scumteam was OP given their powerful Undying ability that was very easy to unlock considering there are only nine players to guess from rather than eleven. I'll take some responsibility for that.
I was pretty sure that none of my protesting was going to keep popular opinion from shooting DK but I also thought that we'd unlock Meg that night after all the claims so I wasn't worried if iRebel listened to me and if he did there would still have been the DK wifom in the game that most were concerned about.
Antny I said this in the scum chat but I thought you responded well to the situation you were in when you joined and you were on Plum. If you hadn't gone quiet we may not have been in as good of shape.

This isn't true. We couldn't guess every night without sacrificing something else for some reason (I've always played where the scum shot could be added on. Added to the fact that we had practically nothing safe to claim we were hardly overpowered.

I don't think I, personally, would have bought that claim. This game was fashioned as complex (and it was), but from what we had already known re: roles, I would have found your role to be suspect.

To elaborate DC: One of the reasons I argued against the possibility of a three person scum team in Futurama with a two-shot hitman was the fact that the game could end on Day 2. When I got my PM and saw I had two shots, I suspected it was either 2 scum or 3 scum with a way to off-set my ability (like bulletproof player[s]). If you were a hider, it does help off set the two shots I have... or it enhances it by allowing me to kill a whopping three people. I would've had a hard time buying that probability.

Yeah, I get that but I knew there were three undying so with all of the factors hiding behind one seemed legit. It worked with the flavor Arian gave me as well... This game would have been much trickier if we'd have had to claim.
DC, I haven't had a chance to read the scum chat yet, so if you would, answer me this: did the WIFOM about whether or not I had the second shot have any impact on your N2 decisions?
I have never played a vig before, and when the only NK N1 was mine, I kind of had to improvise on the fly. If anyone has any thoughts or opinions on whether or not I played correctly D2, I'd appreciate hearing them.

Not really. I thought that you did have the shot and wanted you to shoot because you didn't seem likely to shoot any of us and I was pretty sure we'd unlock Meg's ultimate. Once we saw so many roles D2 I was trying to play to win N2.
I made my thoughts clear in the spec thread, but I am going to say it here again, as it is a VERY important lesson to learn.
Busdriver and redirecter are two of the most confused roles in the game as they both do similar things. There is also the fact that the name is used interchangeably and people know that role by different names. When this claim comes up, always look at the FUNCTION of the role as opposed to the role name. This leads to less mislynches.
Well I think considering how rare the role actually is on here combined with the relative newbness of the town, they got bloodlust for a lynch. I am pretty sure Kosa has never seen the role before, but I thought for sure Void would have at least paused more than he did on the claim.
@Proph re: Starcraft mafia... I isoed Void and read enough to know that situation wasn't like what was going on with. BE. I def would have read him (BE) the same as town as he'd just burned me n TWD.

Had the thought crossed my mind, then I would have, but it didn't so I didn't. Lesson learned.
Just got around to reading the end-game flavor. Well done, Arian. I'll certainly sign up for the sequel.
Thanks =)
I'm going to work on a different flavored game for the moment and then I'll revisit Xymande after that one is done -- don't want to burn myself out on it, so I'll probably continue staggering them from there.

It was just a swingy game
I don't think I, personally, would have bought that claim. This game was fashioned as complex (and it was), but from what we had already known re: roles, I would have found your role to be suspect.
Mod gaming, I know, but yeah.

Busdriver and redirecter are two of the most confused roles in the game as they both do similar things. There is also the fact that the name is used interchangeably and people know that role by different names. When this claim comes up, always look at the FUNCTION of the role as opposed to the role name. This leads to less mislynches.

I'm going to work on a different flavored game for the moment and then I'll revisit Xymande after that one is done -- don't want to burn myself out on it, so I'll probably continue staggering them from there.

It's clear from the flavor that I don't believe he would ever do anything bad, but we all know that wasn't true.
