I am Nicol Bolas, your host and captor. For centuries, I have planned, plotted, and schemed, and have always been foiled by one thing: Planeswalkers. Every time I have the upper hand in a battle, another Planeswalker ruins my conquering attempts. But no more. I have recruited the aid of some, shall we say, "defective" Planeswalkers. Those without a desire to help the multiverse. Those who would aid me in my conquest. Your goal is to weed out these defectors and then you may face me in your weakened state. However, if they win, I will reign supreme over the multiverse.
Let us begin this game of death.

The only thing I don't like so far is Generic apparently drawing conclusions based on wildly incomplete information, and mostly just implying things rather than stating them outright. Generic: No, it's not exactly the Kennedy conspiracy, but you should still state your conclusions specifically. Also, how was Prophylaxis' vote on MDenham "good"?
Everything scares me... kitties scare me... squirrels scare me... corpses....corpses bring forth a pletora of confusing feeling which i prefer not to dwell on...:p
Someone got angry fast and ultra defensive. Theres only two votes on you, and one is just RVS by MDenham. You started off confused being singled out, then instead of actualy defending yourself you lashed out like a cornered animal.
that did not read like anyone was talking down to you or your character as a person so the sudden anger makes me suspicious.

I'm bemused more than anything. I engaged wessel when I thought he was going to have something of note, then he accused me of avoiding commenting on a weak exchange between him and Proph, like I was the only person not contributing to it.
Then teia attacks me for treating the exchange with contempt. Then caex says I'm hyper defensive.
And as I have always maintained in games I respond to everything aimed towards me. If you wa t to vote me over it that's your perogative.
Your response to Teia still came off as over the top defensive. But the other two interactions so far haven't been terrible. As I said, it comes off as suspicious for now, thats it.
If you're going to be going the "smileys indicate nervousness" route, it's worth noting that your vote for a mod could just as easily show lack of willingness to commit to voting another player in RVS.
Proph first RVS voted me, but then immediately unvoted to vote MDenham for seeing something suspicious. At that point RVS was over because the votes were no longer random but pointed at something constructive and specific.
@ Wessel
Are you saying you saw something scummy as well then, or just glad hes involved? Also if you think its good to put pressure there, why are you letting Proph doing all the pressure there?
Quote from Generic »
The sarcasm is me, i took you seriously when you pulled me up on not engaging in the game yet thinking i had somehow missed something glaringly obvious or juicy for early debate, but when i was told by you what it was and it was only relating to you i felt like you had taken a shot at me over everyone else for no apparent reason and so my opinion towards it was disdain from the start.
@ Generic
Why dismiss it so early with disdain and sarcasim? If you thought it was wessel wasting his shot, why not shoot back with questions of your own and ask his opinon rather then post sarcasticly, thereby contributing nothing other then post count?
Generic is leaning town for me. #50 seems to be coming from a town mindset, and I've been in many of Generic's games before and I'm used to him. He just plays like this.
The best way I can describe Generic is like a hurricane. He comes in during Day 1, makes a mess, then starts making sense.
I find Wessel's poking at Generic during RVS noteworthy. Generic's response was over-the-top, but there is no real reason for Wessel to call him out during RVS for RVS-type behavior.

I dunno. I generally don't like it when a player comes in and says "This is my meta, guys, so just go ahead and accept it." Makes me nervous when people try to self-meta.
RE: Wessel's prodding of Generic: I can think of a reason, but I'll let Wessel answer for himself before I say anything.

Can you please clarify/expand by what you mean by "Good"? It's a fairly curt response.
Yea, I was a bit short on time when I came to answering your question, and expected this follow-up anyway. By 'good', I meant two things. Firstly, I agree that MDenham's smileys could indicate a nervousness, further exacerbated by his response to you which show a concern for how he is viewed, and an attempt to escape suspicion. So more pressure is good. Secondly, I like the vote because it shows you're actively involved in the game.
Nice wishy-washy position there as to whether or not my usage of smilies indicates nervousness.
Also, I'm pretty sure that response was the verbal equivalent of me giving him the middle finger over the most horrible null tell in the history of Mafia: the usage of smilies (and making bad jokes about other people's user names in RVS).
Unvote since we're out of RVS; vote Prophylaxis for deciding I deserve a vote just because I'm trying to have fun while getting the scum strung up.
Everything scares me... kitties scare me... squirrels scare me... corpses....corpses bring forth a pletora of confusing feeling which i prefer not to dwell on...:p
New Zealand standard time, and got tattoo today, sorry for being late to the party! Read back and Wessel and Generic strike me as overly defensive. FOS both of them, but nothing solid as yet. Not going to bother omgusing the vote on me during RVS, since I missed the whole stage; although I called the autovote Jace when my clan was picking our planeswalker
Prophyl buddying Generic seems a little suspicious to me, but it's early days yet.

All right, so what aspects of their posting seem defensive? Does one seem any more defensive than the other? What conclusions would you draw based upon your observations?
Basically, your post seems pretty noncommittal and overly vague. Let's get some more concrete details from you.
Also Prophylaxis: That vote of yours seems a bit OMGUS-y. "Prophy's buddying up to Generic." "Vote Prophylaxis." Do you have anything to back that vote up?

He FoSes both Wessel and Generic. FoSes without votes are scummy because they strike you as a noncommital player who is afraid of voting. You have a vote - use it! He also fencesits.

Prophyl buddying Generic seems a little suspicious to me, but it's early days yet.
Another fencesit and a weak call.
He says I'm a "little suspicious" and when I vote for him, that "suspiciousness" immediately graduates to a full on vote. He then FoSes in his second post as well.
As for FoS, yes and no. I've become more and more convinced just in my games that I've seen that town don't FoS even when they have two suspects. They are fine putting pressure only through attacks rather then non-commital psuedovotes. As such I've moved more to the mindset that all FoS are scummy.
See this post. A person who FoSes all the time looks like as though as they are afraid of taking a stance.
I personally don't think MDenham's use of smilies is damning.
Wessel's behavior towards Generic feels a bit too aggressive, and while I don't like Generic's overall tone, that's hardly reason to vote him.
Proph's vote on Necropsy smells a bit of omgus. On top of that, he asks Wessel a very self-conscious question, which is definitely reason to look his way.
Vote Prophylaxis
EWP: @Prophylaxis: Here's a little gem that I happen to like, since we're quoting people, talking about the 'honestly' tell but I think it fits here, too.
"Hey, X used that one particular word, and another player in another game said that one word was a scum tell, so I am going to ignore everything else and vote X without actually trying to read him."
(If it wasn't obvious, I'm calling BS on your reasoning.)
Not sure yet. Could be scum not wanting to help (After all town wants to help other town), could be player confused at what he couldn't see right away untill you explained it later. Plus, as he said, hes prone to emotional outbursts so he didn't filter what came from his head to the keyboard before posting. Theres always the possibility I'm reading too much into things, but its been noted for later reflection.
Quote from Wessel »
Why post this? Teia already asked this, what's the reasoning behind you having to repeat it, if not because you're overly concerned with your own image?
Naw, I had actually missed that abrupt end of sentence when I first read your wall of quotes until Teia pointed it out. I was just genuinely intrested in what could be valuble intel. Turns out it was just a thought you completed elsewhere in the post, so alls good there.
Lack of immediate voting I will put down to not knowing salve meta (I understand noob tells read scummy, but I play elsewhere and I like to out reads before making rash votes)
My initial suspicions were justified for reasons similar to page 3, but with not much to go on, I was hoping to hold out for something a little more solid since the random voting was over.
Apologies for not quoting, as I mentioned earlier, I am playing from a tablet (check Dimir thread if you care to verify my computerless status) which makes posting a little trickier (hence Prophyl ninja'ing me before I cemented a vote earlier).
Regarding the suspiciousness turning into a vote - no edits are allowed and I updated my thinking in realtime. My schedule dictates I have certain times I can be online, and I write my thoughts out loud during these times. On further reflection, I continue to find Prophyl's willingness to immediately omgus me scummy as hell, and am happy in my voting. I seem a convenient scapegoat to draw away from the discussions earlier regarding the strongly defensive play of who I suspect is his scumbuddy.
Read back and Wessel and Generic strike me as overly defensive.

Also Prophylaxis: That vote of yours seems a bit OMGUS-y. "Prophy's buddying up to Generic." "Vote Prophylaxis." Do you have anything to back that vote up?
Quoting this because Necropsy didn't answer above and I want a deeper analysis of the defensiveness he talked about.
Why? What's self-conscious about it and why is it of any concern?
He's not asking your opinion of MDenham or his "case" against him, he's asking if you approve of his actions. The wording seems off.
Quote from Wessel »
This is not the time to go into this, if you don't mind. In the meantime, can you tell me what you think of the people who have been attacking/defending him?
I have no real opinion about most players this early in the game. I have you leaning town, but that's about it.
Everything scares me... kitties scare me... squirrels scare me... corpses....corpses bring forth a pletora of confusing feeling which i prefer not to dwell on...:p
I haven't voted him. But can you tell me if you apparently don't like Generic's overall tone, and see it as hardly a reason to vote him, what you think of his behaviour in the sense of alignment?
Bad wording on my part. What I meant was, while I don't like Generic's tone, it isn't enough to earn my vote. As for what his behavior indicates in terms of alignment, honestly I can't tell at this point.
Why is his question self-conscious. Why is it OMGUS (or 'smells' that way) and not a valid vote? Why are those two things enough to vote him?
As Caex has already pointed out, he didn't question what you thought of MDenham, he's asking specifically what you thought of his vote. That's a very weird thing to be concerned over. Can you tell me any legitimate reason he should care what your opinion of his vote is?
As for the omgus, Necro suspects him, he immediately votes for him, and the best justification for it is that Necro didn't immediately have a target in his first post of the game. It's true that FoS can indicate fence-sitting, I'm not willing to immediately assume that on someone's first post of the game.
How are the two similar? I mean, ZDS talks about that a use of a particular word in one game does not carry the same weight as in a different game. In other words, words cannot be seen without context. So how does your point equate to this game, to Proph? I'm not seeing it. Here Proph is rightly attacking Necropsy for FoSing people, throwing small pieces of suspicion every which way, not willing to take too much of a stance, generally fencesitting.
This one just comes down to what I already said, I'm not willing to instantly assume fence-sitting from Necropsy's post. Opting not to target someone as soon as you join the game doesn't register as scummy to me. If the behavior continued, we'd have a different discussion here, but as is, I don't see it.
So, given that, he isn't 'rightly' attacking Necropsy. He took an opportunistic swing at someone that used a buzzword.

(Probably NSFW) So you may have heard I'm trying to write a TV series...

Prophyl buddying Generic seems a little suspicious to me, but it's early days yet.

Consider my vote on MDenham as well.

More votes on Necropsy, please.
Another fencesit and a weak call.
He says I'm a "little suspicious" and when I vote for him, that "suspiciousness" immediately graduates to a full on vote. He then FoSes in his second post as well.
See this post. A person who FoSes all the time looks like as though as they are afraid of taking a stance.
Thanks.
(If it wasn't obvious, I'm calling BS on your reasoning.)

Naw, I had actually missed that abrupt end of sentence when I first read your wall of quotes until Teia pointed it out. I was just genuinely intrested in what could be valuble intel. Turns out it was just a thought you completed elsewhere in the post, so alls good there.
It's Hip to be a Square

Quoting this because Necropsy didn't answer above and I want a deeper analysis of the defensiveness he talked about.
I have no real opinion about most players this early in the game. I have you leaning town, but that's about it.
{Magic: The RPG}
Bad wording on my part. What I meant was, while I don't like Generic's tone, it isn't enough to earn my vote. As for what his behavior indicates in terms of alignment, honestly I can't tell at this point.
