I've been sad ever since Breaking Bad aired its finale due to a lack of decent dramas on TV, but HBO fixed that with this show big time. IMO, this is the best thing on TV right now. It's moody and cerebral with all the normal trappings of a cop drama, but the spins they've put on the genre take this show miles above anything else right now. I love the story telling structure of solving a crime over 17 years with flashbacks mixing with current events. I love the dynamic between Harrelson and McConaughey and the character building they are able to do in just 8 epidose (technically 7 as of now) is admirable to say the least.
I cannot wait to see the finale on Sunday and this is one of those rare shows that I look forward to re-watching once it's all over. It's just plain great TV.
I don't understand this "overacting" thing. The only scenery chewing performances I saw were the police captains and they were more caricatures than characters and existed just to move the story. Also, you have to remember that the only time those guys even show up is in flashbacks and the show establishes that neither protagonist is a reliable narrator. I found the acting fit the shows tone and intentions.
Now that it's over I'm very satisfied with True Detective. I guess I'll stand alone (in these forums, you all would HATE my facebook feed) in the fact that I think it's the best thing to hit TV in a while.
I thought that the final episode wrapped everything up a little quicker than I'd have liked, without touching too much on how far-spread the effects of the final outcome were felt. Maybe if Rust & Marty had caught their guy an episode earlier, so the show could have gone into what happened to some of the other players involved once everything came out.
Either way, I was happy with the season as a whole. I was kind of either-or on Matthew McConaughey before seeing this, but the show definitely made me a fan. Very curious to see what they do with the second season.

I didn't see it as it aired, but it made for a pretty good eight hour long movie.
I finished a month ago or so but I don't remember thinking it was overacted. The acting was what made the show good. If you thought TD was overacted, you must have a harder time than even I do finding decent shows (there are a number out there, but watching tv on a tv or looking at tv listings... I don't understand how most of the programs exist).
Ultimately I liked it quite a bit. I was kind of expecting some grand jackhammer of a finale, but I think that was because I watched it in a short period of time. Maybe watching it one/week would've changed expectations a little. The show feels like it has a lot of momentum, and I'm just used to twists at this point (exacerbated probably by the beginning where they made you wonder about both of the main characters). The fairly straight forward ending and both characters surviving was almost a twist just by being what it was. I'll rewatch it at some point and see how it holds up. Playing the first season straight opens up a possibility of a real mind **** next season or later on in the show, when we aren't expecting it.
Brad Pitt is in the next season. Gonna watch it, if it's anywhere as good I'll be happy.
Just finished this one a few weeks ago. Very very good. There are so many good quotes from this show too! I've always been a fan of Harrelson and McConaughey, and they both kill it here. I'm curious about what their doing for season 2. The show seamed to be a pretty self contained story, so i'm not sure where exactly their going to take it.

Not just the Tendo King, the power of the Galactic Leyline surpasses that of the Tempa Emperor, No!, It's magnificent power is even greater than that!
