Marvel has signed a deal with Netflix to produce four live-action series with a culminating mini-series event 'The Defenders'. The four series would include Daredevil, Jessica Jones, Luke Cage and Iron Fist.
Sounds pretty awesome. I love Luke Cage and Iron Fist, and I see a lot of potential for a Jessica Jones series like Bendis' Alias, with a super-powered private eye.
I just hope they're better than Agents of Shield, but I think a more focused story would help that quite a bit. Jessica Jones would be noir/detective show, Iron Fist would be a martial arts/kung fu show, etc.

Could be neat. If they plan on integrating the shows in a big epic finale, though, they can't be TOO disparate in tone. I imagine there will be a lot of crossover between the four shows.
It would be (IMO) neat to see the same 13 time periods from the viewpoint of four different heroes.
I am cautiously optimistic. The Defenders aren't exactly a triple-A hero group so they're not going to pull in many viewers based on name recognition. Hopefully though it ends up being good and is a success. I like all four of the characters mentioned and it would be nice to see projects like this to do well.
I wonder if the plan is for the mini-series to spin into a full blown show of it's own if it does well? Or if they would consider renewing only 1 of the 4 shows if one does significantly better than the others? Is it weird that the news release already makes me think that they're planning to have all of them die in the finale ("the gritty world of heroes and villains of Hell's Kitchen...a dream team of self-sacrificing, heroic characters")?

I think it's more of the former plan. The idea is that each show will be a different genre (Martial Arts, Crime, Noir and I don't know what daredevils would be, legal?)

Netflix has proved they can provide quality programing with House of Cards, so now they need to expand their library to bring in new customers.
Marvel gets a chance to showcase the B list that couldn't carry a movie on their own.
As long as the casting is competent and the director has an understanding of the characters, everyone could win (including fans).
