Tonight was a big night. Anyone who has seen the episode will tell you that tonight marks the end of an era of guessing and theories and the end to the big fat question that has been going on for 8 years
The show paid off its big ticket mystery...only to set up 3 other ones
1. Will Barney and Robin actually tie the knot?
2. Will Lilly stay in New York after Marshall tells her that he accepted the judgeship.
3. How will Ted give Robin her necklace back, assuming he decides to give it back?
Also I approve of Cristin Milioti. She has a 'girl next door' feel to her.
I was extremely annoyed because I am currently "liking" the page on facebook, and before I even got a chance to watch the episode, I refreshed my facebook news feed, only to see...
a gigantic picture of a girl saying "one ticket to farhampton, please" - the mother.
Worst way to see the mother's face. Ever.
This was probably too little, too late. The show has been declining in quality for years and the characters have become pale shadows of their former selves. I'm only watching out of habit at this point and the big reveal felt decidedly flat. If it came three years ago, maybe it would have been a huge moment, but with the writing nowhere near as tight as it used to be it did not have as much impact as previous game-changing moments have had.
This show should have run 5-6 season tops. The last couple of years have just dragged on really badly..the actors are clearly phoning it in at this point. Next season will obviously be the last.
I love the show, but like so many, it just missed the right moment to end.

It's been confirmed for some time that season nine will be the last. Jason Segel was the lone holdout for contract renewal and there was a time where it didn't look good.

I really want to guess that somehow Ted will wind up with Robin. Maybe Robin won't be the biological mother to Ted's kids, but somehow they'll wind up in the end.
Then again, Ted's narration in the pilot seems to go against this. Anyway, six more seasons to go for me!

You're not going to enjoy it. Trust me
I trudged through 4 seasons (after season 4, it got redundant real fast) but since I invested so much into finding out who the mother is, I stuck with it.
You know, I have friends who are die hard, hard core, HIMYM fans because of the mystery, but I don't get it. The meat of the show is just a well written sitcom, it just happens to had a myth arc thrown in for good measure.
Count me in the "watch it out of habit" camp. At this point I figure I've invested enough time in it that I just want to see how it ends. I've started making sure I have something else to do while I watch it though as I don't think it deserves my undivided attention. This show went really south pretty early on.
I think the real question in this show all along isn't who is the mother, it's why the hell is Bob Sagat the future dad?

It's a well written sitcom for the first couple of seasons, but it's virtually the same story every season:
Ted falls for someone, Ted goes out with said person, Ted breaks up with that person, Ted mopes, Ted realizes his life partner is Robin. Rinse, Repeat
Granted there are a couple episodes per season that are random and almost community-esque and they did branch into
Robin and Barney, but it was very choppy as in they would magically start a relationship and end it just as fast.
I thought Cristin Milioti was fantastic as the mother. I was definitely skeptical at first, but I was won over by her portrayal and her chemistry with Lily and Ted.

Totally agree. She has such a girl next door feel to her

Indeed!
Though it's somewhat premature to comment with any basis, I think she would be a lovely wife for Ted and that I'm very happy that, after so many seasons, that she will be his wife and the eponymous mother.
I'm looking forward to looking back on this season, because I think HIMYM has run its course. 9 seasons, sheesh!

Maybe it's just me, but I feel the acting quality has really declined even though they're the same actors.

Considering Segel would rather be doing his writing and big screen stuff, Smulders would rather be on the east coast to have her family together, Harris seems far more invested in his extracurriculars and award hosting gigs, and Radnor is endeavoring to be a 40 year old Zach Braff, I'm not surprised their efforts have declined over the years. The only one who seems to really want to still be doing the show is Alyson Hannigan.
It's probably also hard to get it up for ridiculous work schedules when the material you're given is not nearly what it used to be.

Maybe that's it, their hearts just aren't into the series anymore and it shows.
Really the only scenes I see where there's a spark of the solid acting is with the stuff relating to the original storyline...moving things along with the Mom, the Wedding, etc...but the filler is just awful now.
Last night's episode was one of the worst things I've ever seen. This show seems to get exponentially worse with each episode. I hate that I must know how the story ends.:argh:

Agreed. I read somewhere that she will become a regular member of the cast part way into the season, I'd guess after the normal winter break. Hopefully the last half of the season will be somewhat watchable.
It saddens me to see how far this show has fallen. The seasons have been gradually getting worse over the last couple of years, but this season so far has just been..ugh. The entire cast feels like they are just phoning it in(some of them have been on that plan for years now, but still). And I don't even see what they can do to redeem it. The final 1/2 season would have to be the absolute best so far to make this season seem like anything less than garbage. The mother seems like an interesting character, but not powerful enough to carry this through. I'm looking forward to the final episode for not only the conclusion of the story, but also so that this dead horse can stop getting beaten.
I feel like the show would have ended well if we found out Victoria was the mother when she came back briefly there, though obviously they couldn't have used the 'help me ditch my fiance at our wedding' storyline.
