After reading many chapters of Gate (manga), I started making comparison between the anime and manga. Both are really good, but while the anime is shonen, the manga is definitivelly seinen. Making it a shonen anime is perfect for a weekend show, but it takes some of the flavor out of the manga. For example, in the manga, you have kidnapping, torture, slavery, rape, murder and lots more nudity with sexual content while the anime has none of these (when Rory the Reaper kills the bandits before she met the JSDF, here's the difference between manga and anime; Manga: bandits just finished killing and raping womens and Rory forces the last survivor to bury the victims before killing him, Anime: bandits just killed peoples and Rory plainly killed them all).
So basically, we have a toned down Gate as an anime. The flavor is still there, but there's something that lacks in bringing it higher.
As for Shokugeki no Souma, clearly not a serious anime. It's a good piece, fast paced (faster than the manga at least, it takes 15 chapters before they go to the training camp) and they don't waste episodes with story talk or endless fighting scenes (altought the fighting here is with cooking).
And finally, for Overlord. You still ahven't seen anything. Read a few chapters of the manga (what I could find on the net) and it's going to take a turn towards a more dark direction soon. Cues from the anime tend to say the same thing. Plus, I recently heard it was based on a light novel, which is better.

Now I really need to read Gate. Going to ask Yen Press if they are going to licence the LN for NA release. Might also ask them to do the same with Overlord. If they are wary about their customer needs, then they'll probably listen to some requests.

I really liked how Ultimate Otaku Teacher tackled the issue of how transgenders are treated among society in a positive manner which I felt was a missed opportunity as a plot in Sword Art Online II. Other than that I've also been watching Machiko & Hatchin which reminds me of how much I miss Space Dandy while Dragon Ball Super I feel is improving in terms of animation quality and battle choreography. Shokugeki no Souma (a.k.a. Food Wars) is as fun to watch as it is educational when it comes to the field of culinary cooking despite the "foodgasm" fanservice getting out of hand at times.

Foodgasm you say? At least the reactions are not as wierd as in Yakitate Japan (time travel? really?). But I must say I'm waiting for this fall's anime season, with Utawarerumono season 2.
By the way, I've shaken the hand of Rikiya Koyama (he autographied my Utawarerumono anime cover and I was photographied with him too), the original voice actor of Hakuoro in Utawarerumono ( https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rikiya_Koyama ). That man is a legend.

I know! I'm happy to have cosplayed as Hakuoro during the Otakuthon this year! Some recognized my costume (the group Angela, a girl who gave me a hug for making a cosplay based on her favorite anime, some persons who also remembered the anime and of course, Rikiya Koyama!). But what made me the most happy was meeting the voice between so many memorable characters. That's priceless.
I hope he comes back for next year's Otakuthon.

My roomates and I have taken to calling Food Wars (Food Porn) because of how ridiculous they get. Fan service usually kills shows for me when its as constant as it is in Food Wars but the characters and cooking are interesting enough that I still watch.

Jitsu Wa Watashi Wa managed to laught at those foodgasm in Shokugeki. It's clear it's just plain comedic for an anime. You can actually tell that Jitsu wa Watashi Wa is a pseudo To-Love Ru without all the ecchi, more dense characters and lots of funny and wierd situations. Like the alien girl that must use a robot body to attend school or the childhood friend who has a pair of possessed glasses.

Just picked up a few for the collection. Bamboo Blade, which was fun, but not as good as I was hoping. Golden Boy, which I haven't got a chance to check out yet, but I have read very good things about, and I am pretty excited for. And this one called, Kurau, Phantom Memory. Never heard of it before, but I got the entire, massive, box set for 20 bucks, and I guess it's made by the same people who did Full Metal Alchemist(which I actually don't like at all, mostly due to the terrible, to perfect, computerized, modern anime art), but it looked promising, and for the cheap price, hopefully it will be worth it.

Not just the Tendo King, the power of the Galactic Leyline surpasses that of the Tempa Emperor, No!, It's magnificent power is even greater than that!
Kurau: Phantom Memory. Never completed the watching, but saw the first episode. The soundtrack is good, should be a decent anime and the story seem really interesting.

I originally watched the first episode of Overloard and just stopped watching. The plot and concept are hardly anything new really after getting so many variations of this. However I ended up watching episodes 2-6 last night and I guess I will say that it has its own charm. The first episode mostly sucks so you really need to watch about 3 episodes I feel to give it a decent chance because the start is really slow and sort of boring.
My rule is typically to give any show 5 episodes, and if I'm not impressed by then I stop watching.
So any of you guys seen Asura Cryin'. That ending really pissed me off, not going to lie. It's about a guy and his best friend whose a ghost, complete with demons, giant machines, and robot chicks. I think the closest thing I could compare it to is Full Metal Alchemist, though it's not in the same league (What is, though?)I still enjoyed it and recommend it for the journey, but on the caveat that you know it's going to end poorly.

Oath of the Gatewatch; the set that caused the competitive community to freak out over Basic Lands.
I'm kind of surprised that there's no talk of Shimoneta in here. It's pretty much the only show I think is really worth watching in the current season. I'm at episode 6 at the moment.

We have laboured long to build a heaven, only to find it populated with horrors.
You should watch Charlotte. The anime is great! And they didn't hesitate to temporary kill one of the main characters twice (just saw the newest episode, episode 9, and it confirmed two of my guesses: Ayumi is not dead and time travel is involved, huge cue were the wierd memories from the protagonist and Ayumi). It's an original work and it's from the same studio who gave us Angel Beats.

I watched an episode but the concept isn't really my cup of tea.
As a side note, I watch a lot on kiss anime but they are going to be down for a few weeks. Does anyone have a good streaming site they would suggest for me in the mean time?

Okay, found out about another good anime. Joukamachi no Dandelion. It's decent, has good graphics and the setting is interesting. You basically follow the story of the royal kinds of a country. There's 9 of them and they are soon going to run into a king election. They are under constant surveillance by cameras when they are in town, only place where there's none is at home and at school. The king wants them to live the most normal life as plausible, but there's a catch here. Everyone of them has a superpower, which identify them as members of the royal familly. The main focus is on the shy girl who can control gravity (restricted to only her and what she touches), but there's also some views of the other's daily life, like the 10 YO girl who can control the life energy of stuff, making them either older or younger for 24 hours.
Seriously, it's good.

I watched the first episode when it aired. I wasn't impressed. Mostly because it wasn't funny for a comedy(like most anime honestly), and i thought the concept was mostly lame. Different strokes I guess.
First note; I have no idea what happened to my old account, I tried to log in and it put me on my curse account (I use curse VO) so there's that. Not sure how to fix it atm, so not trying to have dual accounts or anything.
Anyhoo, that being said I've been watching a lot of anime recently and I'm going to shoot off some recommendations:
I know some of y'all feel that fan service ruins the anime for you. But for those of you that don't, I would highly recommend Shokugeki no Soma.
This is definitely my new favorite recent anime.
To a certain extent it ruins it for me. I don't mind a little fan service every now and then but when it becomes a prominent feature of the show, I can't get into it.
For example rosario + vampire, I tried to get into it, but it seemed like every shot included a panty shot somewhere and the story/comedy/characters weren't really that good.
What I don't get about Anime fans. Why say "Shokugeki no Soma" Why not just say.. ya know.. Food Wars..
Yeah though, not a huge fan of "fan service". Never really adds anything to the show. Rosario + Vampire was so terrible, lol.
I agree that giving the english names makes more sense but some of the separation might be where you watch and or discuss such things might call it by its Japanese name. I know I occasionally watch anime on both crunchyroll and kissanime and I know that kissanime tends to have the japanese names occasionally / more often where as crunchyroll tends to do english names almost exclusively.
If I was watching on a site that did not translate it the name I know it as might just be the Japanese name.
As for fan service - I agree I would rather not delve into that. I think it sort of lessens otherwise good anime in most cases. I would rather they stay serious and stick to the plot and do some sort of specials or some offshoot if they must for fan service. Occasionally I feel there are shows that are good regardless of fan service but its not something I am generally looking for when I look to watch a show. Some shows like No Game No Life and Food Wars I feel are still good shows regardless of their fan service moments.

That's interesting that Gate is a dark series. I also believe Gate has a LN(it does and It's completed)
I need to get around to watching the Psycho Pass Movie.
It was okay. I think the writing of Psycho Pass really went down hill after the first season.
Watching Ore Monogatari's new episode. This might be the funniest anime I've ever watched.
