Nickelodeon said in a release that “The Legend of Korra takes place 70 years after the events of ‘Avatar: The Last Airbender’ and follows the adventures of the Avatar after Aang – a passionate, rebellious, and fearless teenaged girl from the Southern Water Tribe named Korra.”
Korra’s quest eventually leads her to Republic City–the epicenter of the world of “Avatar.” A metropolis powered by steampunk-type technology, the city is inhabited by people from all nations. Korra finds that Republic City suffers from rampant crime and is also dealing with an anti-bender revolt. Korra is tutored by Aang’s son, Tenzin, is the ways of airbending.
Anyone else super excited that we're going to see more of this world.
anxious to see if this could be anywhere as good at the original was for the first 2 seasons. Season 3 of Avatar was kind of dissappointing/rushed so that they could do the movie, but This could either be a good followup or total crapola
I watched the move with my wife, and she actually liked it, so I got her to watch the show with me, skipping book one. I have to say, its just as good the second time around.
I am happy to see M. Night did not destroy this, and will be looking forward to the new eps. I know they can't be as sweet as the original, but if they are even half as good I will be
This sounds amazing. Especially if they do as good of a job on this one as they did on The Legend of Aang. Though I will be disappointed since we won't have Toph or Sokka... but especially Toph, because she's badass.
Also any bets on whether or not Boomie is still alive.
Geez H_H, I thought I was a bitter old man. I've got nothing on you.
As it should be.
I mean, I'd rather they milked it (and thus, me) with knock-off merchandise, shirts, models/figures, that kind of thing. It's a great piece of work, and the dvds for it are treasures alone.
To me, Avatar wasn't "that world". It wasn't even exactly "those characters." It was those events. That story. That story only exists once. It's done. It is critically acclaimed, and I'm ... overjoyed, really, at the achievement of it, the writing.
I cannot see what more I can get from this sequel.

Happy to hear it. One of the more interesting thing's I've heard (haven't had it confirmed, so it's speculation for now):
Quote from copypasta »
Antibenders are lead by Sokka.
In a city of metal and fire. Metalbender and firebenders control the lives of people.
If you cannot bend, even water, you are nobody. Destined to live in slums doing dirtiest jobs there are, with no escape.
20 years ago Sokka approached Fire Lord Zuko telling him of the suffering, hoping that the powerful Fire Lord sees the problem and changes the laws to stop the unfair segregation.
Zuko refuses as industrial output of the city brings benefits to whole world.
2 years later Sokka organizes strikes, which then turn into riots.
Aang arrives and stops the violence brining, sending nonbenders back to their slums.
With powerful Avatar present in the city, with earth king and fire lord unwilling to change how things work, nonbenders lose all hope and all spirit. 3 years pass with benders position being stronger than before.
To give them fighting chance, to make a statement, Sokka murders the most powerful bender in the world showing everyone that they can be beaten even by lowly nonbender.
A week later a new avatar is born
Tenzin soon arrives into the city looking for his fathers murderer. He fights and loses to sokka and his group.
Sokka goes into underground planning the fall of benders, while Zuko and earth king try to weed him out.
Tenzin makes contact with White Lotus and awaits new avatar.
15 years pass and avatar arrives in the city with three groups interested in her greatly.
Sokka wants to finish her once and for all, Zuko and earth King want to destroy antibenders once and for all while Tenzin and white lotus want to bring peace and harmony back to the city.
For the most part I'm excited as the majority of what we got to see of their world was from an outsider's perspective, as a tourist really. Since Aang and his party were the heroes, the story simply followed them while the places they visited merely provided a colorful backdrop. I'm hoping they flesh out "Republic City" a bit more than the locations in the original series.
Also: As a steampunk junkie I'm already getting those steamy punky tingly feelings all over my body.

@Clawn: I doubt any of that info is legit. There's no way they would do that to their characters. Also, Bryan implies and died a 'natural' death.

Konietzko: You gotta keep in mind that he was frozen in a state of suspended animation for 100 years, so he kind of burned up some of his extra Avatar time.
ETA: I also love this:
Konietzko: Mike and I, we love those [female] characters too, and we’ve encountered countless fans who are male who really like those characters too. We just don’t subscribe to the conventional wisdom that you can’t have an action series led by a female character. It’s kinda nonsense to us.
From what I understand, the person destined to become the next Avatar in the cycle doesn't actually gain those abilities until the current one dies. Aang probably would have died only a few weeks at most before the beginning of this new series.
And with most of the main characters from the first series in their 80's, it's probable they'll make a few cameos. (King Boomie was well over 100 in the first series, so Granny Toph probably will be running around ... in metal-bending powered armor no doubt.)
Never know may be they will have Toph's grandson or grandaughter join the new avatar to teach earthbending/metalbending. I am siked to see how this one plays off and who the villian will be this time around.
Yeah, I'm also excited! The only thing I don't like is that it's a mini-series, meaning only one season/book.

Well, to me very story has more, unless everyone dies. I would like to see if Zuko ever found
his mother
or what Aang did with the rest of his life.
We just get more now. This is not like a reboot, the story still happened like it happened.
Oh. Oh my. This is good, good news. Can't wait. I wouldn't mind if that rumored plot background ends up true--although a 70+ year old swordsman defeating an Avatar (and his brother-in-law) seems like a stretch. Then again, maybe Aang knew he had to sacrifice himself for the greater good. Either way, I can't wait to see Aang in spirit form.

Listen to my M:tG flavor Podcast: Story Circle! (Newest episode is all about Innistrad previews.)
I'm impressed they went with an older character and a girl this time around. It does feel a bit of retreading since they mentioned Korra as a sort of "Katara 2.0." Granted they already established the cycle as Water, Earth, Fire, and Air, so it was only a matter of time they considered "Katara 2.0." However, I just hope she isn't some pastiche and her own character. Being older than Katara helps a lot, she seems to be around 15-17 in the concept art and they also stated in the WSJ interview they wanted to do different themes.
A smaller cast with an industrial revolution gives way to a lot of different stories. I think they'll be able to pull it off and am rather impressed so far with their ability to create a world. Also, if you look at it from their perspective her growing into a woman over continuous seasons and exploring different kinds of bending like soulbending and more subsets can extend that franchise by a season or two.
Overall, it's something I'll watch with the kids again. They proved in the original series they can write for male and female characters well, this should be a fun jaunt.

... actually I'm displeased. I liked what The Last Airbender/The Legend of Aang was. Anything else can only ruin my fond memories.

if this series is 70 years after the fact, and Korra is a teen, that mean Aang dies before he's even 60...
i had an idea for the first Avatar, as in the one who started everything.
the only series I want continued, because it needs to be continued: Samurai Jack
