If you had written Hidamari Sketch instead of Master of Martial Hearts, this might have at least made some sense.
You're not saying that Puella Magi Madoka Magica is better than Sailor Moon are you? Sailor Moon is pretty much the benchmark for the Magical Girl Shojo Genre the way it was meant to be, the way Madoka Magica portrays it is on a psychological level geared toward this generation's otaku demographic in which they don't know what classic anime was like in terms of quality, character development, and story.
To them it's all about blatant fanservice, unrealistic harems, loli/moe, and other stupid stereotypes that most Modern Anime portrays nowadays that turns American audiences away from it. Anime/Manga hasn't been great since the 80's and 90's. Sure there were a few hits in the early to mid 2000's but it completely stopped after 2007 before the global economy crashed.

You're not saying that Puella Magi Madoka Magica is better than Sailor Moon are you?
No, I'm saying that comparing PMMM to a mix of Sailor Moon and Hidamari Sketch would at least be somewhat relevant. To compare PMMM to a mix of Sailor Moon and Master of the Martial Hearts is absurd and undermines your credibility.
"A rich man thinks all other people are rich, and an intelligent man thinks all other people are similarly gifted. Both are always terribly shocked when they discover the truth of the world. You, my dear brother, are a pious man." - Strahd von Zarovich
Card Slinger J: How do you qualify what's "good for the Western audience" and what's "good for Eastern audience" anyway? You made the comment that the anime was made for the kids/teens of Japan, and then when I commented back by listing seinen for the most part, you made this comment. Could you clarify?
You're not saying that Puella Magi Madoka Magica is better than Sailor Moon are you? PMMM is not anything like a magical girl series because it's a deconstruction. Sailor Moon is the benchmark of magical girl anime yes, but it is via that benchmark that PMMM tries to steer away from, not toward it. If you want stuff that goes with the benchmark go watch Precure or Nanoha or something. I have to admit, however, that I have little interest in the genre to begin with. My opinion on the "mix" is that it's a brilliant bait-and-switch.
Why should one even compare PMMM with Sailor Moon when they're different genres? If you want me to compare them, then yes, I like PMMM more than Sailor Moon. It is, subjectively to me, better than Sailor Moon. I also liked Monster, Anohana, Fate/Zero, Liar Game, Team Medical Dragon, Say Hello to Black Jack, Tower of God, Dr. Frost, TWGOK, One Piece, Iris Zero, Another, and Noein more than Sailor Moon. Magical girl isn't a genre I'm generally into. I didn't list a single magical girl anime outside of PMMM.
PMMM's story is the strongest I've seen in anime in years, something I haven't seen for a long time before that (like Monster strong in terms of plot). The fact that you lump PMMM with "blatant fanservice, unrealistic harems, loli/moe, and other stupid stereotypes" shows that you never watched it in its entirety, and undermines your credibility.
Fate/Zero lacks "blatant fanservice, unrealistic harems, loli/moe, and other stupid stereotypes". It's story driven and genuinely reflects the Type-Moon method of story telling not seen since Kara no Kyoukai: The Garden of Sinners. I don't think you know the badassness of the main character until you watch more though. I mean, it's not common to see a man who essentially doesn't use any magic completely demolish opponents with magic and being intelligent about it.
Please, I'd like to know why each of the anime I listed doesn't make it "good" for the western audience, citing specific instances within the anime as examples. I'll give you the list, and I'll add some more.

I haven't seen any anime movie air on the prime time of mainstream TV networks, so I'd say anime is still far for mainstream. It seems mainstream for us archetypical MTG players because we are immersed in this type of culture.

In the name of Freedom of Speech, and against all Talibans of this World
But why is anime being mainstream a bad thing? Anime being mainstream is why we got Space Dandy simulcast in english(tbh it actual was AIRED HERE FIRST which is awesome). Anime being mainstream is why Crunchyroll exist and is able to be grabbed on your game consoles. Anime being mainstream is why netflix carries a bunch of it, subbed and dubbed.
Those shows are may not be the best shows(a couple of the ones you named are actually p good though) but they helped get anime popular in America. Which is a good thing. Not a bad one.
I think they are more referring to it being a bad thing because the shows that are being watched encourage more sub par anime. I don't mind it when a good show like full metal alchemist gets a good response but when the million episodes of naruto spawn more shows of similar nature I don't feel it is a positive thing overall.
Getting more people into anime is a good thing. Encouraging bad shows is not.

I have officially moved to MTGNexus. I just wanted to let people know as my response time to salvation decks being bumped is very hit or miss.
I think the issue here is that we're basing our experience on the history of Anime in the US, which is misleading. There is an assumption here that quality has somehow changed, but it hasn't.
Japan has shoveled out decades of crap anime. Licensing was such that it was too expensive to bring anything but a guaranteed hit to the US, which is why the Anime of the 80's and 90's was always something excellent. Even in the early 2000's, the stuff that was brought to the US or that the US Anime audience heard about was generally the 'good' stuff.
But the anime market in Japan hasn't really changed, all that's changed is the US' access to that market that's changed. With the advent of torrenting services and later streaming services, the actual distribution models completely changed in the US, and it was no longer feasible for Japanese companies to charge outrageous licensing fee's because US audiences wouldn't pay $30 for four episodes anymore.
So no, Anime hasn't gone too 'mainstream', we're just finally exposed to the true scope of Anime. Whereas before it was more of a niche nerd thing, and so companies only brought over things that would appeal to that niche. But now Anime nerds have to recognize the truth: Anime is just television like any other. The same reason we've had 20 seasons of American Idol in the US is the reason we get hundreds of episodes of a crap Anime. It's just TV.
I agree with your assessment Jay but there is also the angle of making what makes money. If sub par shows lake Naruto and Inuyasha get more views / money it means that there will be more incentive to follow their design philosophies which is not a good thing.

I think there will always be 'that' franchise which is stretched well beyond where it should end. It's nothing new:
And it's really just a matter of milking a franchise for all it's worth. Making Anime isn't cheap, and sometimes a sure thing is going to get milked, especially with Shonen series. As long as there are also high-quality shows coming alongside, I don't really have a problem with it.
American audiences have basically 0 say in what gets made or gets a sequel or whatever. Those decisions are mostly based on Blu-ray sales.
That's why a pile of bad light novel shows like infinite Stratos get made every season. That's what sells in japan. And most things on any medium are just a spin off of something old and good.
Anime being mainstream is why we're going to get more stuff like Space Dandy to air here. I hope I see the day where toonami airs official subs the same time as it airs in japan.
