With all the coverage on the 4-letter network this past weekend of MJ's 50th Birthday it made me feel nostalgic about the NBA Greats and so I wanted to create this thread.
Basically if you could have a starting five with any player from any era in their prime, what would it be. This is not "Who you think is the best", this is "Who do you want on the team". Please have a PG, SG, SF, PF, C, and a 6th man. The 6th man does not have to and should not be a player who came off the bench in the career, just someone who is like an honorable mention to your starting five.
Again this is like your all-time favorites starting five, not a discussion on who is the best player of all. I would expect answers to be players from the era in which you watched them play and that is fine what I am looking for.
Please post your answer like mine as the sample (for clarity and consistency):
PG - Kevin Johnson (He was my favorite player when I was younger. Period. His passing was what he was known for but many forget he also averaged around 20ppg per season. I used to love watching him pull up during a fast break on a dime and nail the 18 foot jumper at the top of the key.) SG - Michael Jordan (I used to root against the Bulls when they dominated but had total respect for his superior play.) SF - Clyde Drexler (Loved his fast-break play, and his style personified silky smooth. This is why he earned the nickname "Clyde the Glide".) PF - Charles Barkley (Loved the attitude, and carefree style of play. He was a prominent player on two of my favorites teams growing up in the 90s in the Suns and Rockets.) C - Hakeem Olajuwon (Arguably the best post-up center of all-time. This is the style of center-play I like best even though it hardly exists in today's game.) 6th Man - Kobe Bryant (Love that winning is above all for him. He is a leader on the floor and on this team he'd provide that and the kind of "Instant Offense" off the bench every team needs.)
Kobe is not a 6th man. Putting him down as a 6th man is just wrong. I know you mentioned that a 6th man is not a 6th man but a honorable mention. Why not just put honorable mention? That is much more appropriate. By putting Kobe as a 6th man you are cheapening the role of the 6th man and Kobe's career itself. Just saying how I see it.
PG: Stephen Curry (He passes, has arguably the best circus shot in the NBA right now, is smooth as *****, and is looking to become one of the best 3 pt shooters in the NBA if he lasts another 10 years lol)
SG: Tracy McGrady (It's a tragedy what has become of his career. He obviously had just as much talent as Kobe and Lebron but lost it all to a poor ethic and not so championship caliber teams
SF: Lebron James (The guys got it all. Talent, Athleticism, Leadership, Speed, Strength, Skill Body Frame, Offense, Defense. Everything. He is scary on the offensive end and a beast defender. He knows this and it sucks that he is pressured to win championships when its already more than a treat to watch him at work)
PF: Dirk Nowitzki: (There is no other player like Dirk. Someone his size, mobility, and drive. He is a huge threat outside and inside the paint)
C: Shaq: (Cmon. He's the last great big guy that dominated into a ring. Great personality and great player. Always entertaining.)
Honorable mention: I would have to say Kobe as well. Lebrons the better player but he lacks the style and leadership I see in Kobe.
6th man: Jason Terry is the only one I can think of right now. He was essential to the Mavs in their championship and did as good if not better as a 6th man those last seasons with the Mavs.
I'd rather put either Kobe or Jordan in a different position than take one them off the court. That seems just wrong.
PG: Magic Johnson
SG: Kobe Bryant
SF: Michael Jordan (he's bigger than Kobe so he gets bumped up to the 3)
PF: Tim Duncan (I'm surprised I'm the first to mention him)
C: Kareem Abdul Jabbar
Honorable Mention(s): Shaquille O'neal (The hardest choice, for me, was between him and KAJ)
Lebron James (he would be the SF if it not for Kobe/MJ)
Yeah, I was going to go with Tim Duncan at the power forward but I decided to go with charles barkley because I've watched charles barkley quite a bit especially in his prime. Charles barkley was such a savage beast in the paint and could also dribble and shoot substantially like a true shooting guard.
Don't get me wrong though, Tim Duncan is still pretty awesome and was absolutely unstoppable in his prime and will definitely be in the hall of fame when it's said and done. I mean, yeah he's the big fundamental and showed future power forwards how to play that position to it's greatest potential. While Tim Duncan does have like five championships while Charles Barkley has none. So I definitely wouldn't argue with anyone on including Tim Duncan in the starting five of all-time. I am neutral on this matter entirely.
PG: Magic Johnson (this is the toughest call I think. Stockton and Isiah Thomas have arguements.)
SG: Michael Jordan. Kobe in distant second but far in front of whoever is 3rd.
SF: Lebron James. As much as I dislike him, I have to recognize his talent.
PF: Tim Duncan. Dirk Nowitski and Karl Malone get honorable mentions.
C: Wilt Chamberlain. Head and shoulders above the rest. Shaq COULD have surpassed him. Its a shame he spent most of his career out of shape and never bothered to learn how to shoot free throws.
PG: Jon Stockton, with Magic being very close. I'd feel more comfortable having Magic as my 6th man, seeing as he could capably replace anyone 1-5, so Stockton winds up here.
SG: Michael Jordan
SF: Lebron James
PF: Tim Duncan, with Dirk & Karl getting nods.
C: Wilt Chamberlain, and Kareem is the only other person I'd consider.
6: Magic
Feels wrong to not put Kobe on this list somewhere, but eh.
PG Jason Williams
SG Michael Jordan
SF Lebron James
PF Kevin Garnett
C Hakeem
Having such an athletic team makes Jason Williams super exciting to watch. Imagine him throwing off the elbow pass to a cutting Jordan. Or half court oops to Lebron.
PG - Magic , I think hes the best PG, if you want to win a close game you must choose Magic Johnson.
SG - Jordan , no explanation here lol.
SF - LBJ , Was going to say Bird, but LBJ have all the talents around him, he is way more athletic than Bird.
PF - Duncan , He is too consistent, can do well in both offensive and defense.
C - Hakeem Olajuwon , this one is the toughest choice to pick, Hakeem is pretty mobile and have all the skills around him.
6: Stephen Curry, in few years this guy will become the best 3pt shooter ever.
PG: Gary Peyton. Can't believe no one has mention this guy yet. Won defensive player awards the year the Bulls were the best team in the league. He is the most complete point guard to ever play.
SG: Clyde Draxler. Sticking to the Pacific Northwest and just trying to not say Kobe or Jordan like everyone else. Also Clyde the Glyde was an absolutely fantastic Guard in his prime. Second to only Jordan. Honorable mention to D.Wade and Reggie Miller.
SF: Larry Bird. He's the best, man. Does it all. The best forward of all time. One of the few players to average a double-double, has the most finals appearances, and the only knock is his longevity.
PF: Kevin Garnet: A defensive powerhouse and one of the all-around great power forwards. To be honest if I didn't already possess one of the greatest trash talking teams in history up to this point I would of put Tim Duncan here, but he's far too nice and silent to include in my unit.
C: Shaquille O'Neal. The best center that I've seen play with my own eyes and the lead trash talker of this unit. Bill Russell, Wilt the Stilt, and Kareem were all far before my time and not nearly as charismatic as my man Shaq. Bring the Ruckus.
6th man: Scottie Pippen. One of the most versatile players in history.
I think this just begs the question of what type of team are we constructing? Are we constructing a team of the best-of-the-best or are we constructing teams that would actually play well off of each other? For instance, you probably don't want Magic and Michael with lane-clogging PF/C's because then you have a logjam there, having Magic/Michael/LeBron/Duncan/O'Neal or KAJ or Chamberlain clogs the paint up, and you have too many redundancies. However if it's the Best of the best, then obviously that's just fine. I'd probably put the team together something like this if synergy matters...
Gary Payton- defensive powerhouse, can guard two positions, and is an efficient offensive player. Stockton was a thought, but his lackluster defense added to the fact that he's not exactly who I would want, not only that but his lack of a real shot. Payton is an inconsistent shooter, but he can drive the lane pretty well if need be, and is more comfortable facilitating.
Michael Jordan - slotting the two is obviously one of the most versatile players in the history of the game, GOAT he goes by sometimes, but it needn't be said why he was selected here. Kobe is a thought, but ultimately he falls just short of Michael.
Larry Bird - at the 3, I wanted a sharpshooter, Jordan takes defenders off people, so why not have one of the deadliest shooters in the game? In the Gym range, and catch and shoot, both things he can hold over LeBron's head. Not the defender LeBron is, nor the rebounder, but his shooting makes him invaluable.
Tim Duncan - Easy choice, I know spoke of lane clogging before, but Duncan is quietly effective from 15 feet, and he's still a great rebounder from 15 feet. Both valuable if Bird/Jordan/Payton shoot over 15 feet away.
Shaquille O'Neal - The most argued about position, no matter where you go, I choose O'Neal simply because of his dearth of athleticism. That man would drop-step and my lands would untap it was so graceful. Doesn't contain the arsenal of moves Hakeem had, doesn't have the will to win that Bill Russell had, No sign of the hook shot that Kareem possessed, but still managed to put up points because of sheer athleticism. Ewing isn't even close to this list, and Chamberlain remains one of the most overrated players in history(give Wilt the ball with only 3 seconds, we'll see how he does)
Honorable Mentions to: Oscar Robertson, Kobe Bryant, LeBron James, Kevin McHale, Hakeem Olajuwon
PG- Magic. - Because , it's Magic. Stockton was great saw the finals for many years.
SG- MJ. - The best to ever play!
SF- Big Shot Rob. 7 championships. Maybe not the most sparkling player in terms of behavior but the man is severely overlooked in most places.
PF- Tim Duncan. - 4 championships, NBA finals mvp, leader, not a douche
C- The Dream. - The shake, the leadership, the awareness, the post play.
Also mentions for Reggie Miller, Karl Malone, Clyde Drexler, Shaq, Chuck, and Kobe.
^ Pretty much this but for different reasons.
In general, I'm a huge fan of versatility / redundancy / resistance to injury, and the lineup above provides it in spades while still maintaining an abundance of raw talent.
PG: Earvin Johnson
The ultimate unselfish player who gets everyone involved. A leader and winner. His ability to suit up at any position makes up for his questionable defense.
SG: Michael Jordan
The most obvious choice (for winning). 6x Finals MVP. 5x Reg Season MVP. Best offensive player and mutiple DPOY.
SF: LeBron James
Another obvious choice. Won his first title at age 28 27 playing with future hall of famers Scottie Pippen Dwyane Wade & Dennis Rodman Chris Bosh as well as hall of fame coach Phil Jackson under 4th year coach Erik Spoelstra.
The only real blemish on his resume is that he never made it to the finals he made it to the finals twice without winning until his 28th birthday. Offensive, defense, inside, outside - LeBron have it all.
PF: Tim Duncan
A big man with a solid mid range game and ability to anchor a defense. Provides a great size and skill mismatch at the 4.
C: Wilt Chamberlain
100 pts in a game and 20K women in real life. Can't argue with that. Sorry Kareem.
PG: Gary Payton
SG: Michael Jordan
SF: Kobe Bryant
PF: Lebron James
C: Kareem Abdul-Jabbar
6th: Tracy McGrady
I went with a defensive minded team that could still drop a ton of points. Don't know how it would work with so many ball-hogs, but we'll see.

Dear kbx41,

Flaming or Other Forms of Misbehavior
Saying that you sometimes wish people (in this case the implication is the staff) would fall down a well and get AIDS is hardly appropriate for the forum.
C - Shaquille O'Neal - Although I would only place him 6th all-time among big men (behind Kareem, Russell, Wilt, Hakeem, and Moses Malone), I think Shaq in his prime is just a physically dominant force that would be difficult for any other player to stop. He would have the height to deal with all the others, and his altheticism would be the deciding factor in his favor.
PF - Karl Malone - A guy who can rebound, score, play defense, and provide a ton of grit. It was rally hard to not take Olajuwon or Tim Duncan here.
SF - Larry Bird - Bird could pretty much do it all and he was amazing from long range.
SG - Michael Jordan - Best player to ever play the game.
PG - Magic Johnson - None of the other PG's would be able to defend him and he would be an ideal distributor of the ball on such a loaded team.
Basically if you could have a starting five with any player from any era in their prime, what would it be. This is not "Who you think is the best", this is "Who do you want on the team".
