I'm a Yankees fan, so I can't grieve with you, but I do think the light at the end of the tunnel is coming for the Mets. The pall of Bernie Madoff is close to being fully cast off, and the Mets will have more money and more payroll space. Sandy Alderson and Terry Collins are vast upgrades over Omar Minaya and Jerry Manuel. I think the Mets need to make locking David Wright up to a long-term contract their #1 priority when they have more financial flexibility.
Don't forget as well that the Mets have a number of pretty impressive young prospects. Matt Harvey made his long-awaited major league debut and struck out 11 over 5.1 innings, and Zack Wheeler isn't far away from being ready too. Adding Harvey and Wheeler to a rotation with Jon Niese and Dillon Gee sounds pretty solid. The acquisition of Wheeler, the Giants' top pitching prospect entering the 2011 season, for outgoing star Carlos Beltran, was a masterstroke by Sandy Alderson and gives Mets fans reason to hope in the coming years. Righthanders Jeurys Familia, Jenrry Mejia and Michael Fulmer also can bring heat in the mid-90s, though Mejia had Tommy John surgery in May 2011. The future of Familia and Mejia might be in the bullpen, but that's not necessarily a bad thing, as the Mets pen has been pretty bad the past few season. There are a few promising position player prospects as well: Wilmer Flores (SS), Brandon Nimmo (OF), Reese Havens (2B), Matt den Dekker (OF), etc etc.
Mets fans have weathered a long storm, but there could be land in sight soon.

I hear exactly what you're saying. It's still difficult, however, to watch an underdog team make a great run before the all star break, then instantly destroy themselves when they return.
This year has been great for R.A. Dickey - his is a truly inspiring story. They guy nobody wanted is now statistically the best pitcher in the N.L. I don't see David Wright going anywhere other than the Mets.
The issue isn't necessarily "money." The issue is that there are a lot of holes in the team (most glaringly, the bullpen). Jason Bay has been nothing short of useless. Johan Santana had his no hitter then decided to stop pitching.
I love Collins and Alderson. I just don't see the Wilpons walking away any time soon.
However, I do enjoy the fact that the Marlins are worse than the Mets. How's Miami, Jose Reyes?
Alderson has been, is, and will continue to be an AMAZING GM for the Mets. It's no surprise MLB had a hand in making sure that pairing happened. When I heard the Mets were hiring him, I was genuinely happy for them.
Bear in mind, I'm a Yankees fan whose ideal baseball season would always end in a Subway World Series. So, aside from any games against the two teams...

It could be worse, you could be an Astros fan. The team has completely fallen apart.

Even if the author is silenced, the performance is stopped, the story will not end.
Whether it's a comedy or a tragedy, if there is cheering, the story will continue on.

The Astros have no shot next year anyway moving to the AL West.
I really hope they keep Yankees vs. Mets a summertime series with this new alignment meaning interleague throughout the season. Historically bad teams should be playing the late-season interleague games

I love being a Mets fan. You get to root for a New York team and, at the same time, have that small market experience like we're in bleepin' Omaha or something.
Incidentally, I already have the same experience rooting for the Islanders.

Why must sports fandom do this to me?
Man, the only way this could be funnier is if you were also a Knicks fan.
I grew up watching the Mets. In fact, I recall a time (the '80s) when New York was a Mets town.
I will continue to root for the Mets purely out of loyalty and tradition. However, I will also lament yet another apparent season collapse.
This thread is for fellow Mets fans to grieve. This thread is not for fans of other teams to flame us.
Other Mets fans out there want to share their disappointment?
