TMZ, citing multiple law enforcement sources, reported that Seau was found dead inside the home.
It was apparently a self-inflicted gunshot wound. My gut instinct tells me that if they research his brain, they'll find the damage that they have seen in other players.
Not all that surprising considering he tried to drive his car off a cliff a year or two ago. The most interesting part of all this is that the fatal wound was to the chest, thus preserving his brain for future research on the effects of sustained head trauma
Its sad that he had to resort to suicide (if that's what they end up ruling his death). One, especially as great a player/person as he, should never have to 1) die alone 2) take themselves out. It they do end up finding that he suffered some sort of brain injury this just helps to reinforce that they need to have a support system in place for those guys that put there bodies on the line every week just for our entertainment.

RIP Junior
It was confirmed to be a suicide.
I think this will be the final straw or close to being one for the NFL and I predict by year's end, we'll see a support system being implemented
One of the two great linebackers that I got the chance to see in my time watching the NFL, alongside Ray Allen.
Having heard the reactions of various NFL personalities, Marcellus Wiley in particular, underscores how big of a figure Seau was in the industry. It's a huge loss for the league, and the communities he supported.
While I don't condone suicide and find it hard to care about somebody that didn't care enough about themselves or anybody around them to take that route.. He was one of the greatest defenders to play the game..Sad situation.
His family has agreed to a brain analysis. I fully expect them to find significant damage and I'm sure that's what led to the suicide in the first place. As much fun as it is to watch football I think people really need to wake up and realize just how dangerous it is for the players. The human brain was not meant to take that kind of repeated trauma.

That's a very narrow minded view of the situation. Are you familiar with the brain disease CTE and its effects?

Yes, it is a dangerous sport, but when players sign up there is an assumed risk just as a coal miner assumes the risks of developing black lung. Im all for progressive advancements in safer equipment but all the rule changes the NFL has implemented is ruining the game.
I am highly in favor of post career medical coverage for former players, which in all honesty should probably include a mandatory year or two worth of psychiatric evaluations and counseling

Except in cases of absolute idiocy and dementia, the knowledge of right and wrong remains intact. The fact that he shot himself in the chest implys that he knew exactly what he was doing. I'm sorry if you feel differently.
It is, though, like I said before, a sad situation.

To echo this, the brain is a very very delicate thing. Notice how a bruise on it can kill you easily. After taking so many hits, parts of the brain start to not function as well or even at all. This causes disrupted brain activity.
This link will show you a normal brain and an Alzheimer's patients brain. Now before anyone says anything, the Alzheimer's patient's Brain is similar to the brains studied by scientists found in former NFL players.

That was never my contention in the first place. Would you say the same about a terminally ill cancer patient? That he didnt care enough about himself or others to go a different route? We're not talking about basic depression.
Suicide is murder. Murder is a sin. Yes, I'd have to say I don't approve of suicide. Cancer and pulling the trigger on yourself is 2 different things entirely. Having had multiple grandparents succumb to cancer and a friend that killed himself I can tell you from experience that it's a totally different feeling when God takes somebody away than if they do it themselves.
Are you saying that because somebody is going to die anyways that they should be allowed to take the easy way out? We're all going to die. It's a fact of life. Is a patient diagnosed with early stages of HIV able to justify suicide because he is eventually going to die anyways? I think not. You can disagree with me all you want. It won't change my views on the subject.
I'm not trying to take anything away from this man's career and accomplishments. I remember watching him with great admiration for the way he played the game.

This absolutely isn't the kind of post in which you should be expressing your beliefs. Additionally, do a bit of research on CTE and what it's done to players.
As a San Diego native and a huge Chargers fan, I was pretty gutted when I heard the news. I grew up watching 55 lead the Bolts defense for well over a decade. He, along with Tony Gwynn, WAS San Diego Sports in the 90s. It's a shame that both of them have fallen onto health problems in the last few years. :-(

I was responding to somebody else. Thanks, though.
Don't you think there is a reason these guys get paid so much money? If somebody offered you a multi million dollar contract to beat your head against a wall for 4 months of the year would you be suprised when you sustained injuries?

your religious beliefs have no place in this conversation nor do your personal life experiences (of which I have nearly 2 dozen). This is about CTE and how it affects the brain, often rendering those afflicted with it incapable of making rational decisions and drowning them in the deepest of depressions, not because of lack of emotional control, but because its a medical impossibility in many cases. The brain is damaged beyond repair.
If you didn't want to hear my response why did you ask me, sir?

This is not the place to discuss either the morality of suicide, nor the effects of traumatic brain injuries; a debate thread on the topic seems far more appropriate.

I respectfully disagree in regard to the latter. CTE is a huge topic of concern in the NFL and it is the reason the Seau family has consented to a brain autopsy. These brain injuries are killing many NFL players and ruining the lives of many other. So, when a HOF player kills himself because of this disease, I dont see how one could say it isnt relevant to the conversation concerning the deceased. In fact, this case is probably going to be the one that leads some sort of aftercare program for retired NFL vets

That damage may be why Junior did what he did... Its sad, but maybe this is the final straw that pushes the NFL.
Why must someone die to advance things like this?
