This discussion about penetration and stuff got me to the following question: what runes should I actually use now?
The thing is, I don't care one bit about this aspect of the game.
I know, right? It's pretty poor game design. Totally unexciting, but a huge IP sink, and you have to pay at least some attention to it or you're just plain weaker.
WoW had an armor penetration formula that was equally powerful against all targets...
Which always made me wonder what the point was. If armor and armor pen are just % changes to damage, why not just scale damage/hit points directly? Armor should have some asymmetrical effect, like in Starcraft.

Vive, vale. Siquid novisti rectius istis,
candidus inperti; si nil, his utere mecum.
So, since people here probably know more about such things than I do: what are good runepages to use for each role? Let's say, tanky support (Leona), mage support (Morgana), ADC (Varus), AP mid, AD mid (Kha'Zix), bruiser top (Shyvana, Singed), AD jungler (Pantheon), tanky jungler (Amumu)? (the ones I put between brackets are the ones I most use so I'm particularly interested in pages that work for those champions, but the idea is that I can use that page for similar champs as well of course)
I'll just give you the runes I'd use most often for each of those champs/roles and you can take that as you will:
Leona: flat armor reds, mix of flat and scaling armor yellows, mostly scaling MR blues maybe some flats, HP quints
Morg: hybrid pen marks, rest same as leona with more flat armor yellows (since in bot you DEFINITELY want some flat armor for early lane)
Varus: AD marks, flat armor yellows with up to 3 scaling ones, MR blues mostly scaling, lifesteal quints
AP Mid: Reasonably variable. Hybrid pen or mpen reds (depending on champion and how well they can harass early with AAs) are a must, flat hp or mostly flat armor yellows, scaling AP or MR blues, generally AP quints.
Kha: AD marks, flat and scaling armor or flat HP yellows, 5% cdr on blues and rest into scaling or flat MR depending on matchup, AD quints
Shyv: kha with mr instead of cdr, definitely armor yellows
Singed: hybrid pen marks, armor yellows, mr blues and MS and/or AP quints
Panth: same as kha with more scaling mitigation runes (as long as your jungle stays safe, scaling mitigation is >>> flat because they'll break even by the time you're really fighting champs. This is especially true for MR).
Amumu: AS marks, armor yellows mostly scaling, mr blues mostly or all scaling, MS quints
for the most part this stuff stays the same for similar champions in similar roles, especially the support, bruiser, fighter, assassin and ADC ones.

Sorry I saw shyv and I tunneled pretty hard on this since I play so much of her
You never want AD marks when you can have hybrid pen. Shyvana does a butt ton of hybrid damage and those marks just amplify it so much more. For quints, you want a combination of AS and MS, the optimal quint set up is apparently one MS and two AS but i've used three MS and it works just fine. She just doesn't scale with AD so getting those marks and quints is rather sub par.
there are a lot of setups for shyvana, a decent amount of pro players run ad marks and quints are all over the place, with health and health regen and armor. In fact I think health regen might be the most commonly used quint for her. But yea hybrid pen marks are probably better in general.
Frankly I don't think I'd ever MS quints on shyv outside of the jungle. The times where she has problems being kited have nothing to do with her movement speed. Right now AS quints are optimal for her in the jungle, they're okay in lane but there's definitely not like... a consensus top lane rune setup with AS and MS... are you sure you aren't thinking of a jungle page?

"Virtue, Jacques, is an excellent thing. Both good people and wicked people speak highly of it..."
I've been playing BoRK / SotD Twitch lately. It's grotesque. I don't know if its a low elo artifact (I'm only in Gold 5), but it feels positively abusive - I'm picking up easily 3 kills a game off of stealthing up to people and instantly bursting them down before they can react. It's a fine combo in teamfights with spray and pray, not ideal, but the lead it lets me build IS that good in teamfights.

Thanks a lot! Two questions about this: I get that hybrid pen is pretty much a straight up better than mpen, but even for Singed? I mean, I'm running away all the time; Singed might be the champion that least auto attacks in the game. And AS reds for Amumu, I understand this helps his jungling but is it that important? Wouldn't hybrid pen also be good (since while jungling he does a lot of aoe magic damage as well) while remaining more relevant later on?
You really just need to embrace the rage. I keep a small colony of hamsters next to my computer and every time I lose a match to mana screw I throw one against the wall.

Her jungle page is probably the same setup as top lane. You don't need extra AD when you can do percent damage with flame breath and also because of that, getting AS allows you to proc the flame breath more during it's duration. MS quints work well in lane when you can easily get in and out for CS and harass.

It's not a big deal for singed if you use mpen instead, but the hybrid pen really helps your early trades in lane where you should be using auto attack. As for amumu marks... everything in the jungle aside from dragon and baron has no MR, so it doesn't help you clear much (attack speed is much better for clearing than even any mix of attack damage and armor pen). It'd help your gank damage a little, but I'd actually sooner change out MS quints for AP quints if I was worried about that. I think that building your runes and masteries for clear safety and speed is really important unless you're on a very early-gank focused jungler like Lee, and especially on someone like Amumu that HAS to farm up well and safely early until he can start using his ult and scaling.

Nah, it's fairly different in terms of marks and quints. The problem with AS quints in lane is that a good deal of your trades are going to be one of three things:
- Just hitting them with E
- Only using your AA in the context of AA-Q reset, on top of whatever burnout and E damage you get
- Just dealing E and burnout damage so as not to take minion aggro
Attack speed does nothing for any of these, it's only helpful in extended trades or all-ins. Which it is really good in. But you can't just all-in every top champion early as shyvana and you'll be very weak to any trades you can't return with a lot of auto-attacks. And people who use minions effectively will really screw over relying on all-ins because you have to auto-attack them.
Those trades are the same reason hybrid pen is really good on her in lane, there's going to be a lot of pure magic trades (and also a lot of aoe magic damage late-game yea) that there just won't be in the jungle. The same thing I said about Amumu earlier in the post comes in here, magic pen does nothing for your clears. It would be a good choice on her for when you start ganking or dueling, though. Here is where you would most likely want attack speed, which is the best clear stat aside from move speed. And the recent quint buffs made them really efficient, so combined with the fact that they help you damage champions better than move speed (directly speaking) it's definitely worth taking them for jungle. It was before the buffs, too.
If you look up pro builds for top and jungle shyvana I'm sure you'll see a general difference. But yea, I should've said hybrid pen marks for top shyvana, although for most bruisers they're not good. I also should've said defensive quints but I'm not a shyvana player so I hadn't actually thought deeply about them.
Why does magic pen do nothing on his clears? His spells all do magic damage and im usually spamming them in the jungle, especially first clear with blue

Jungle minions have 0 MR, there's nothing to penetrate. Except for dragon and baron.

I was referring to her quint setup not the entire rune page.
Yaaaaaayyy, Braum is free in my region this week, so I got to try him a bit.
What I like about him is the Q skill and his passive, which can easily cause stun if used properly. What I don't like about him is that he doesn't benefit much about +AD and +AP items, and instead benefits from +HP. Then again, I guess I'm too used to playing carry (which was why I took to Vel'Koz quite quickly), so Braum's support play is a bit hard for me
Lucian/Twitch/Le Blanc looking to get smacked with the nerf hammer, while Sivir/Tristana are looking to get buffs. This is seriosuly looking like the rise of ADCs again though. IE got significantly better with Doran's changes, while omen losing the ms slow made building it into ADC much less reliable.
The BT shield is intriguing, but 2x Dorans +IE is looking to be the standard ADC line up now, with the exception of TRI/BotrK users.
With the item changes the first thing I thought of is Draven is going to become OP. Then I wept inside.
Think of him in a meta where an ADC's first item is an IE. That is scary. On the other hand the item changes nerf Ez and Lucian since BT was their best AD item. Also the BotRK changes probably hurt Zed the most. It was such a core item on him, now I am not so sure.
In other news the love my life is an old man with beard that is probably high on LSD right now. That's right, it's Zilean. I think people just forgot how broken certain aspects of his kit are and never really bothered to pick him up. I mean he should've been a top counter in the League of Assassins meta, but no one picked him. But I digress, and only wish people didnt see him as a troll pick mid or support.
Strengths:
1. GA every minute to 45 seconds.
2. Great Burst dmg.
3. Enemies don't realize they are already dead.
4. Extremely powerful passive (only need to do the buff camps to reach lvl 3 for a jungler).
5. Eternal movement speed boost/slow.
Weaknesses:
1. Only one true dmg spell.
2. A lot of AP items don't work well on him.
3. Gets wrecked by hard CC/silence.
4. Passive is useless at lvl 18.
5. Allies don't properly use your ult (probably number 1 issue to be honest).
6. High skill cap.
7. Dmg is delayed.
Funny you mention Zilean. I actually got wrecked by a sup one. He might be one of the few sups were you run a mid page on. With a dorans ring 51 ap, unless your a heavy sustain lane, he makes farming difficult, with the one flaw being he pushed the lane/might take exp.
Draven is stronger, no doubt, but the issue I find is his lack of a real escape to be problematic. While he can self kite to an extent, he has a hard time shaking off certain chars, and with the omen nerf, I have a feeling assissins/gap closing bruisers will rise again. That said, now that 2x doran gives LS, draven's lane is scary as *****. The doran's blade was almost a bigger buff to Dra-Dra than the actual damage on IE =p.
Omen nerf actually hurts most assassins (who don't generally care about attack speed and have non-ms reliant mobility) and gap closing bruisers (who are the main ones that build it and are currently pretty reliant on it to cut ADC dps and stick to more mobile ADCs). Omen nerfs help ADCs more than anything else actually.

Ardent censer looks nice on Sona and Soraka, but I wonder how it'll work with Locket or Thresh's lantern. Would it be like a pseudo talisman?
And essence reaver looks nice I'm thinking that Talon might like it, as he does use AAs to get some of his damage through.
My thoughts: Caitlyn is going to be annoying with an early IE. Headshot crits hurt like a mother. Draven is buffed significantly, Lucian hurt, but maybe not enough. Twitch gutted from what I saw on the PBE, going to be really hard to play now. Zed is more worthless than he was before, go figure. Exhaust and Zhonya's already made his job super difficult, now your ADC can get Mercurials and not lose out on too much, and BotRK active nerf means that his assassination potential is almost 0.
LB change is interesting. Same amount of burst, but no silence offers a little bit of counterplay, maybe.
Nid changes should wreck her as a support, finally. Her mid will be decent still, spears still hurt but are easier to dodge/shouldn't chunk you for 60% of your life each hit. More interactive kit is only a good thing.
Item changes are good, though I'm worried for the state of Ez/Graves. Ranged AD casters are hit pretty bad. Not really a fan of the BT changes, tbh...it's too expensive for what it gives now. Doran's blade change is nice, though the constant nerfs to the damage makes last hitting under tower tougher and tougher. Randuins are Wardens mail changes are pretty solid, no real complaints there. Diving bruisers had a bit too easy of a job sticking onto carries.
I like the new support item, but hate the AD one. Support item will be solid on Janna/Sona/Lulu/Karma/Lux/Morgana, probably will see some play. The AD item isn't worth it, IMO. Yeah, it builds out of cheap components, and the passive is kind of cool, but it will set you behind quite a bit. Maybe worth the buy on Ez, but that's about it from what I can tell.
How do you figure? Without the MS slow, I would assume bruisers w/o gap closers now have no real way of being able to stick to an adc. The omen nerf I don't think really affects assassins directly, aside from making adcs stronger, which in turn makes assassins stronger.
Bruisers usually typically build omen, whether they have a gap closer or not if they need armor. The difference is a bruiser like Jax can still stick to a target because of his Q, where as Trundle might have a bit of an issue, once out of frozen domain.
LB probably needs that damage tuned down. Removing the silence helps a little bit, but trying to hit her with skill shot stuns/roots is still difficult as hell. I don't see, for instance, Thresh/Morg ever being able to peel a good LB off when she goes in, while her typical primary target (ADC/APC) probably doesn't have an immediate stun.
As far as twitch goes, I don't think he is as gutted as you might think. He just might go back into building IE first, instead of BOrk (IE was how I saw most people run him post season 3).

LB's damage getting tuned down probably will happen, but I'm glad they decided to try just removing the silence first. Now you can fight her as a burst mage still, if you have good reactions.
Twitch isn't gutted because of the BotRK nerfs, but because of his stealth nerfs. It's going to take forever to stealth now, and if you're taking damage, even flashing away isn't going to help now. Garbage might be a bit of an overstatement, but I really don't see him as a competitive pick if the nerfs go through as they are on the PBE, especially with Caitlyn, Jynx, and probably Trist becoming more popular (though I guess the 2v1 lanes will help with that, though they aren't as popular anymore.)
