yep. gave them more money than I'm willing to admit. I'm just hoping to recoup some of it soon. But I'm getting a bit worried the player base just won't be there. It seems like no one is talking about this.

It's easy to get hyped about a new project like this. It's flashy and has a good sales pitch. However, there have been hundreds of CCGs since Magic was created and nearly all have been discontinued. Magic, Pokémon, and YGO are the big three left standing. Even mega-popular franchises like World of Warcraft, Marvel, and DC didn't lead to lasting games.
Magic is THE fantasy CCG and has withstood the test of time against many other games in the same genre. I don't really see that changing at all.
Well the WoW TCG failed because Blizzard decided to pull the license. Likely due to Hearthstone. Marvel always tied themselves to crappy also-ran games from the get-go. No idea about the DC one.

There's also Cardfight!! Vanguard and Kaijudo that's around right now alongside Magic, Pokémon, and Yu-Gi-Oh!. Pokémon is no longer respected as a TCG nowadays due to genwunnerism, terrible card design choices, and limited competitiveness in it's current format. Yu-Gi-Oh! on the other hand is too big to fail despite it's major flaws that has plagued the TCG since the enactment of the Forbidden/Limited List. MTG on the other hand is doing just fine like it has been although they could improve a bit on MTGO.

There are some local guys that are really into it already. They were backers on Kickstarter and apparently do some sort of podcast and website for it.

I am aware, I've played nearly half of them. But, the game doesn't need to compete with Magic for me to be happy. I just need it to have enough people playing to get games in when I want, and for a reasonable secondary market to exist. Based on the Kickstarter, I thought that was all but guaranteed. But as soon as the clock ended, it seemed like everyone stopped talking. That has me a little nervous.
Anyway, spoiler is up, but alpha is late. Lots of fun things to try, but I think some of the early preview cards got bumped back to set 2.
I'm excited for the game but see no reason to talk about it until I get to play it. TCGs are different from other games in that regard. I can talk about Elder Scrolls Online before it comes out because there's a lot of moving parts and I can single them out. Even if I end up not likening the PvP, for instance, maybe the PvE will be fun enough. For HEX there's only "is the game as deep and fun as MTG?" which isn't knowable just by reading newsletters and looking and spoilers.
In other words, alpha invite plz

I'm nerd enough to link my WoW Armory Though I'll put it in a small font.
I haven't had a chance to actually play this one myself, but from what they have on their website I'm not too hopeful.
The first problem is that it's a very blatant ripoff of Magic. Rules, mechanics, and individual cards — many of each of these are exactly the same (except for the names) or really close. It's so close that if Hex does manage to take off there's a good chance that Hasbro legal will try to shut it down (and have a very strong case for doing so).
Of course, there is some stuff they do differently. Mostly, it's stuff that Magic can't do because of the limitations of physical cards. However, their general philosophy seems to be "let's do it because we can." The result is that they have lots of additional complexity that doesn't actually make the game better and in many cases may make it worse.
I actually really wanted to back this but forgot about it. 50$ gave you a lot. Definitely worth 3 drafts in Magic.
And yea it's a blatant rip off of mtg but I like that it may create some competition for MTGO. WoTC is like 7 years behind on the client. Even the "new" one.
90 minutes and still only 1/3 of the way through the download/patch. yikes.
They didn't put the download behind account authorization, meaning anyone could go to the link in the email and download it, regardless if they've been granted access yet. So thousands of people are (or were, maybe they fixed it) downloading it.

What I don't really get about Hex is why they had to follow Magic color philosophy so closely? I don't really get why Green/Wild has to have flying hate (Plummet vs the Hex direct equivalent Turbulence) or why Blue/Sapphire has to mill things? Why does Wild hate "constants" (the hex equivalent of enchantments? They aren't even flavorfully different much different from Actions (sorcories) in Hex yet we have a Naturalize clone (Nature Reigns).
Think about it for a second: this is CZE own card game. They didn't have to stick within the Magic color pie. But they did for almost everything.
They just announced today that they're letting Gameforge (!) handle the NA and EU servers and support for this game. Make of that what you will.
They also announced that they will be dividing the player base into 5 regions, EU/NA, Latin America, Philippines (odd choice to get it's own region but probably due to them partnering with another company called Level Up whose based there. The creator donated at least $10,000 to the Kickstarter), Russia and China. So enjoy your Chinese speaking server I guess people from Australia.
Really stupid decision. The player base for this game is going to be fragile enough as it is. Segregating countries into poorly defined servers is going to lead to dead economies.
Played alpha a bit over the holiday. Pretty disappointed. There's really no innovation or vision here. Its just a bland mtgo clone (to the point that I anticipate a lawsuit) with an sp campaign (to be added at some future date).
What's the point? they could have really explored the game space of being a digital-only mmo-ccg and made something fresh. I sorta get the feeling they bit off more than they could chew. Like their vision and talent was suited to the fringe product they were originally making, but they didn't know what to do with millions of $$$
And I mean manually Passing priority 4x per turn in a game built ground-up for digital? Seriously?
Oh well. I dont hate it as much ad I'm making it sound. I'm just disappointed.
I was about to go "yeah, another game to try when I'm bored" until I signed up for the Beta and saw the name Cryptozoic in the website.
Cue spit take.
Well, seems like with WoW TCG gone kaputz, Cryppy decides to make another TCG. For those of you who said the game seems to be rip-off of MtG, do take notice that WoW TCG is actually also very similar to MtG, which means I suspect they are probably recycling a few mechanics.
It doesn't mean Wizards is automatically going to win, and if they don't then it opens up a whole new field of competition, think blatant clones and third party Magic expansions.
I love Magic as much as the next person but I'd much rather see them competing on creative assets and overall gameplay experience than just making a couple of "constructed playable" mythics every few months.
Of course Hasbro has the resources to keep this in court for years so I wouldn't expect a WoTC loss anytime soon.
I don't think too many people will want to actually mix cards unless the look-and-feel is extremely similar, which could be trickier copyright wise. The mechanics terminology would also have to be different, which would probably be too annoying to other players, unless one particular product stands out, which in turn I think would only happen if it provides something Wizards is particularly lacking. (e.g. better casual format support)
Alpha starts today and I'm excited. I'm anxious to see if it can be as deep and entertaining as Magic.
Anyone else in the Alpha?

WOTC and Cryptozoic resolve litigation
Looks as though the lawsuit has been resolved so Hex can move forward without any further issues from WOTC.
Played the game a little recently, pretty fun game, really looking forward to what they come out with once the PVE side is really fleshed out.
