I think Gold/Silver would have to be the best games(In my opinion). Later games tended to suffer under a weight of bloat from previous generations, while Gold/Silver had an interesting plot with some genuinely unexpected moments. The pokemon designs still felt 'pokemon-ey', and acquisition of all the pokemon still felt possible without cheating.
Black/White was the next game to come close to that, and has the best PKMN designs overall since Gold/Silver (Although each generation had some good ones, most felt like rehashes of earlier concepts).
I really liked Pokemon Black/White for that fact, that they really tried to forge their own identity. Unlike other games where they had a few token Pokemon to fill out their Pokedex that are new, they kept the ones we loved (Piakchu, Abra, etc...for the most part anyways) and the ones we hated (DAMN YOU ZUBAT!) It was truly unique in that firstly, it was the first Pokemon since Red/Blue to have a fully unique Pokedex. Secondly, it threw the standard team building on it's ear. Hell, you can go a long time in this one before you find a Water or Psychic type. They explored many unusual types (Fire/Bug type anyone? Water/Ghost?) making for combat a whole new ball game all over again. I truly hope the trend continues with X/Y. It was a breath of fresh air.
HG/SS might have been the best value for money games so far. They made the Elite Four pretty hard, too. I might finally pick up a 3DS and get a bunch of Metroid games + friends.
Black/White had a good plot + campaign, but was held back by the 'mons you found in game making the gameplay weaker. Some of the stuff you got was just way too good too early, and the gym leaders using only Unova 'mons made some of them overly narrow (Burgh).
I'm excited. It's finally the excuse to buy a 3DS that I've been searching for. Every generation I hope for a Psychic-Fighting-Dark starter trio, and it looks like my hopes of that have been dashed right away, but I already find these starters more appealing than last generation's.
I have to say, I hope there aren't any super crappy designs like Vanilluxe and its line, but I have a feeling my hopes will be dashed.
Funny how this border keeps moving. Way back when, people were saying the original 151 were the only good ones.
Can you imagine, in ten years? "Ugh, I remember when there were only 459 Pokemon! We had ice cream and Garbage! Now I see these kids with their Mountain and human-shaped Pokemon, and it maies me sad.
A friend of mine has declared that the 1.5 generation on this will be pokemon Z. Doesn't fit the supposed Genetics theme, but it does fit the 3D theme. As in, axis.
Doubt it. Why is their a double helix in the logo?
The original 151 were by far the best designed ones, but the designs starting going off the deep end after the 3rd gen I'd say, with even some of the 3rd gen looking pretty hokey.
Disagree. Remember Voltorb? Ugh. Personally I really like Johto and Sinnoh designs.

See, I think Johto introduced the most or the best, but the it's not like the newer games don't have it, so I like them a lot. Sinnoh is my favorite. I mean, here's what each generation introduced:
Gen I:
Everything
Gen II: Color, "shiny" pokemon, breeding, less glitchyness, baby Pokemon, more types of Pokeballs, the split of special attack and special defense, roaming, Steel and Dark (which stopped Psychic from being OP)
Gen III: A complete rehash of IVs and EVs, weather, natures, a new way of finding shinies, dual-battles, Hidden Bases
Gen IV: The GTS - hell, Internet connectivity in general, a complete overhaul in graphics, a second screen, the Pokewalker, Masuda Method breeding, chaining for shinies
Gen V: ability to sort-of check IVs at birth, GTS negotiations (thank god)
Wha'd I miss?
On another topic, how would you feel if the typing of the final evolutions of the starters are
I actually really liked Gen IV for one reason: the physical/special split. That fundamentally changed the whole game. Considering Gengar was and still is my favorite Pokemon, I was overjoyed when he could finally put STAB Shadow Ball to full use.
This is what gives me some faith in Gen 6, by the way; but, I do think that Gamefreak evolved and devolved most of its popular 'mons already and Gen V didn't really introduce much worth lingering on. I guess Scyther doesn't have a pre-evolution yet...
Forget Scyther, Pinsir hasn't even got its evolution (It got shafted for Heracross, I suppose.)
But... I still cannot forgive Gen IV for not introducing the pre-evolution for Kangaskhan. Waiting since Gen I.
Number 1 explains a theory that originally Cubone eventually evolved into Kangaskhan via a middle evolution, but it was taken out at some time before the game was released. The middle pokemon eventually became the infamous glitch (and potential missing link) MissingNo.

Can they introduce pre-evolutions now? I mean, it's already been established in-game that when you breed a Kangaskhan you get another Kangaskhan. To the best of my knowledge, you only ever get new evolutions when you can do something that you couldn't do in previous games.

They would just do like they did in Gen IV with the incense to get Munchlax, Smoochum and whatnot.
If you go on Serebii or Pokebeach, new X & Y info has been leaked and it's mostly about a brand new Eeveelution for Eevee although the strange thing about it's appearance is that it looks alot like Milotic and Game Freak hasn't really confirmed what it's Type is going to be, I'm assuming Flying or Normal Type.

I am actually kind of disappointed at how Ninfia looks. It doesn't look much like an Eeveelution with all the bows and such. The thing that made Eeveelution design so great, was that the design was simple and encapsulated the essence of the type. Also all the other designs were gender neutral, where this one has a female bias with the bows.
Also I give you ten to one odds it's a normal type. It's the only one I could see with the design as pink and beige usually denote normal pokemon and bows and such are most likely to be found on normal types.
Also I will be interested to see it's English name (which should gives us a good clue)
Hopefully we will get a second Eeveelution as well (most likely a Dragon type).
For some reason, the coloring reminded me of Milotic....
This. Not to mention the ribbon things that look like Milotic as well on it's head.
I'm guessing it'll be Normal, and evolve by beauty. Which I fail to see how that'll even work unless they bring back Pokeblocks (Please no. Just. Please.)

I was thinking it would evolve by trading it while holding a heart scale, but by god do I hate trading evolutions.
Though then again as I think about it will need one hell of a move pool/stat combination/ability to break into my evolution line up if it is normal. I've never found normal to be that attractive as a type as a whole.
EDIT: A theory I read is that Ninfeon is the "X" Eeveelution (bowtie, four streamers, feminine appearance) and we'll also be getting a "Y" Eeveelution. Flying/Ground would make a good pair, like Psychic/Dark did in Gen. 2.
If the Eevee is a flying type, my guess would be -
HP: 65
Attack: 110
Defense: 60
Sp. Attack: 95
Sp. Defense: 60
Speed: 130
If we get a dragon one and are lucky, it'll be:
HP: 130
Attack: 60
Defense: 110
Sp. Attack: 60
Sp. Defense: 95
Speed: 65
Your basic Eevee is at best either a glass cannon or a tank. So hopefully it'll be one of those without being 1HKO'ed by a Raticate's pursuit unlike certain Eeveelutions.
Nintendo and Game Freak have recently confirmed that Ninfia's
English name will be Sylveon whose also the 8th Evolution of Eevee, a YouTube video was leaked displaying gameplay footage of Sylveon first using Fire Blast and then Swift as the last move displayed in the video.

I'm guessing the name comes from "sylph" (it's definitely not from "sylva"), which would make flying-type likely. Also note that it's the lightest Eeveelution to date, which is another giveaway.
I'm still predicting 130 base speed and 110 base attack, which would be great.

I really hope it is not a flying type. It would be a horrible design, especially when the flying type has so much potential. How could you go with a bow tie and hair bow instead of making a Pegasus eeveelution.
Also is just me or does Sylveon's eyes make it look soulless?
Finally I actually think the video makes it more likely that Sylveon is a normal type. Fire Blast can be learned by a ton of Normal types, but by no flying types that aren't fire, dragon, or normal.
Another thing in normal type favor is that it is using Trump Card, which a level 45 Eevee is one of the few pokemon that can learn it. To me having Trump Card be used points to it being the final move learned by the normal Eeveelution.
