What do you listen to when working out? I'm training for a half marathon and I've never been particularly good at creating playlists for running, much less two hours' worth of music. So do you have a particular genre you like to jam to or specific artists?
EDIT: Can I get this moved to Water Cooler Talk? It actually doesn't have too much to do with music genres specifically and I would like more advice and people can see it better in WCT.
I began working out again as part of my New Year's Resolution. I've said it for years but this was the year I finally have actually done it. I am just doing cardio (treadmill) for now and after I drop some weight, I will start strength training. I started listening to my iPod with 18k songs but the randomness of music threw me off. I switched to Pandora to stay in one genre and it has been working out great. I like to listen to hard fast music so I was listening to Combichrist radio but it seemed like they only played 5-6 different bands. I switched to Skinny Puppy radio and hear a nice mix of early industrial (Front 242, FLA, Nitzer Ebb, etc), newer stuff (NIN, Marilyn Manson, etc), Skinny Puppy side projects (Download, oHgr, etc). It works well for me.
It depends on your tastes really. Certain genres can kick people into the zone and increase their performance but it varies from person to person. Most people tend to gravitate to hard rock, fast paced EDM, etc.
Personally, I tend to lose track of time when I listen to (uplifting) trance and end up realizing i've worked for over an hour when it felt more like ten minutes
I run about 20-25km weekly and used to always put my iPod on shuffle but I have all sorts of different music on it so it would be kind of aggravating when a slow song would come up for example. Nowadays I mostly pick an album (generally something rock or metal since I find the faster, more up-tempo music better to workout to) and listen to that straight-through. I suppose that doesn't really help for a marathon though since most albums are only like 30-50 minutes (which is about how long I go for a particular run so it works well for my own purposes).
I'm usually always rocking Bongripper's Satan Worshipping Doom (nevermind the title) when I workout. Heavy and intense doom. The beginning of Hail always get's me going.
Or a hiphop playlist of ish that get's me hype.

Hope this helps.
