Meh...I was never into NIN...Johnny Cash covered them well though.
Oh man! There are some big new albums coming out that I really might think about getting...
Pras Michel's new album is coming out, his second solo album after "Ghetto Supastar", the ex-Fugee member may not be as critically acclaimed or as skilled as other members like Lauryn Hill and Wyclef Jean, but he's still really awesome and I might get this new album...
His main single will be a cover of U2's "I Still Haven't Found What I'm Looking For"...Undoubtedly he'll put a fresh twist on it... :slant:
Also, Billy Corgan of the Smashing Pumpkins is coming out with his first solo album! It's called "The Future Embrace"...and I might get it if it sounds good...I've always been a big Pumpkins fan...
Does anyone know if Corgan's other temporary band after the Pumpkins, Zwan, was good? Hmmmm...

I am writing this letter in protest of the perverse travesty I have suffered at the hands of Mr. Bradley in the form of the horribly unjust "F" grade he has given me for last semester in his complete fraud of a class, World History 101. It calls into question the academic standards of this institution, and my Mom is totally going to kick my ass when she sees it.
I suspect that perhaps Mr. Bradley just feels threatened that I know more about the subject he teaches than he does. It's not exactly a secret that I've seen the band Iron Maiden in concert 47 times, and that I own every album they've ever released. This background has provided me with valuable insight well worth the costs of chronic hearing loss and bouts of epilepsy from prolonged exposure to stage pyrotechnics that have come with it. You see, listening to Iron Maiden is like riding in a turbo-charged time machine with a kick-ass stereo system.
For starters, the class text World History & You! is a complete joke. This so-called "educational" textbook completely ignores the crucial influence of Iron Maiden's mascot "Eddie" in the events that have shaped human history. From the dawn of man to a vaguely futuristic time, Eddie has been there- usually opting to not take a direct role but rather crouch nearby significant historical events with a ghoulish and/or menacing stare. The omission of Eddie from the text amounts to dangerous revisionist history on the part of the publishers, who I assume are probably really big ***s who listen to Warrant.
Mr. Bradley claims to have failed me due to poor class performance, but everyone knows he's still holding a grudge from the time he caught me behind the bleachers lighting the fetal pig from Biology class on fire. That was a serious scientific experiment, NOT a satanic sacrifice.
Don't believe that Maiden has taught me all I need to know to pass that bull**** class? Then come rock with me on a balls-out, historically enlightening journey through time- courtesy of the world's foremost headbanging historians:
4 Million B.C. The Dawn Of Man
The song "Quest For Fire" from Piece Of Mind is a badass track that chronicles the true story of man's life and death struggle with dinosaurs, wooly mammoths and fire in caveman times, and is so full of prehistorical flavor that it rivals The Flinstones. Sample lyrics: In a time when dinosaurs walked the earth/When land was swamp and caves were home/In an age when prize possession was fire/To search for landscapes men would roam. Historical footnote: Mr. Bradley would have us believe that the logic of this song is flawed just because of the fact that dinosaurs and humans never actually co-existed, but how many platinum albums has he released? Relatively few, I suspect.
1300 B.C. Ancient Egypt
The title track of Maiden's 1984 epic Powerslave examines the complex relationship between power and slaves in ancient Egyptian culture. The song is sung from the perspective of an all-powerful Pharaoh lamenting his impending death, and promising to return to life as a mummy and fulfill his curse. This might explain why when they play this song live, a ginormous robotic mummy that looks just like Eddie bursts onstage with huge multi-colored sparks exploding out of his eye sockets- a moment so awesome that to me, it ranks WAY above The Great Pyramids Of Giza on that bull**** Seven Wonders Of The World list.
350 B.C. Macedonia
"Alexander The Great (356-323 B.C.)" from Somewhere In Time pays tribute to the great Macedonian king by painstakingly listing EVERYTHING he ever did, in chronological order. Sample lyrics: At the the age of 19, he became the Macedon king/And swore to free all of Asia Minor/By the Aegean Sea in 334 B.C./He utterly beat the armies of Persia.
I performed an a capella air guitar version of the entire song while standing atop my desk as my final project in World History 101, and Mr. Bradley was forced to admit that it was- despite being "inappropriate and disruptive"- 100% historically accurate. Historical footnote: If you play the song backwards, there are no satanic messages, but Alexander does get younger and his life progressively less impressive.
100 B.C. The Roman Empire
The opening track "The Ides Of March" from the album Killers takes its name from Shakespeare's Julius Caesar, in which the Roman Emperor is betrayed and murdered by Brutus after being warned to "beware the Ides Of March," which is March 15th. This song immediately reminded me of the time that ******* senior Zack threatened he's kick my ass if I didn't return his copy of Slayer's Reign In Blood before Christmas break, and my so-called "friend" Marty totally sold me out and told him that it was in my locker the whole time. This betrayal led to my tragic, Caesar-esque fall from grace. More specifically, this involved Zack wailing on me and duct-taping my buttcheeks together in the locker room after gym class. Et tu, Marte?
11th Century The Viking Conquests
Number Of The Beast's first track "Invaders" depicts the horror of a Viking raid on the British isles. The Vikings were Scandinavian warriors who terrorized the coasts of Europe from the 9th-11th Centuries. No one really knows why the Vikings were so pissed off, but most historians agree that it's probably because they had to wear skirts and were named after a ****ty football team from Minnesota.
13th Century Genghis Khan's Empire
The instrumental "Genghis Kahn" from Killers was inspired by a military genius that conquered much of the Far East in the 13th Century. Mr. Bradley said this dude was a Mongolian, but I saw a picture of him and he doesn't look retarded- he's a Chinese guy.
16th Century Medieval Times
Iron Maiden's song "Iron Maiden" from their debut album Iron Maiden takes it's name from a medieval torture device, the Iron Maiden. It consisted of a coffin-like sarcophagus in which after the victim was placed inside, a spiked door simultaneously skewered and crushed to death the person inside. Historical footnote: "Medieval Times" is also the name of a theme restaurant in New Jersey where Maiden bassist Steve Harris holds a part-time job as the dastardly black knight. My step-dad Uncle Randy took me there, and it rocked!
19th Century The Crimean War
"The Trooper" from Piece Of Mind is about the ill-fated British cavalry charge against the Russian army during the Crimean War, which Mr. Bradley claims lasted from 1853-1856 and inspired the poem "Charge Of The Light Brigade" by Lord Tennyson. Whatever. What's WAY more interesting is the fact that there's part of this song where Bruce Dickinson hits a note so high, that if you sandwich your head between the two speakers and turn your stereo all the way up when he hits it, your gonads will suck back up into your body. If you don't believe me, you can try it yourself- but don't say I didn't warn you!
19th Century The American Indian Wars
"Run To The Hills" from Number Of The Beast recounts the bloody battles between American Indians and the White Man in the 1800's. Mr. Bradley's lecture on the topic lacked Maiden's level of detail, not to mention a kick-ass Steve Harris bassline. Sample lyrics: Chasing the redskins back to their holes/Fighting them at their own game/Murder for freedom a stab in the back/Women and children the cowards attack!
No one knows what became of the Indians, but legend has it that while under heavy White Man attack, they took refuge in casinos on the remote plains and barricaded themselves behind rows of progressive jackpot slot machines, where many remain to this day.
20th Century World War 2
Powerslave's "Aces High" transports you right into the cockpit of a fighter jet- ducking, diving and firing against the enemy in World War 2's Battle Of Britain. Maiden's depiction of this epic WW2 aerial dogfight is so vivid, it's not hard for the listener to imagine what it was like putting those Vietnamese bastards in their place- especially if you take a huge bong hit right before the guitar solo!
I rest my case. With the help of this heavy metal supergroup, I have proven beyond a shadow of a doubt my failing grade to be a grave injustice. I demand that my academic probation be lifted and that you immediately fire Mr. Bradley and replace him with someone who has a superior knowledge of the subject, better vocal range, and a stronger stage presence. Furthermore, I strongly urge that we utilize all available technologies to develop an interactive textbook that plays the corresponding Iron Maiden song when you open it up to a specific period in history.

Is anyone as PUMPED as I am for Kanye West's new album, "Late Registration"?
It comes out Tuesday, I think, and I'm soo freaking pumped, having loved his backback/bling style and his first album, he defies mainstream crap that you'd expect from 50 Cent and P. Diddy...
And this new album got a FIVE OUT OF FIVE FROM ROLLING STONE! I don't listen to the Stone much because they rate too strictly on rap, I think not even giving the legendary rap albums full score, but this must be GREAT if they gave a rap album something that high...
And there're plenty of guest stars, Nas, John Mayer, Jay-Z, Paul Wall, Adam Levine, The Game, and a crapload of other stars!
Just expect for him to have like four hit singles or more off this before the year is done, and into 2006, just like his debut album did.
And in other music news I'm super hyped for...
Mike Shinoda, Linkin Park's MC, is coming out with his SOLO RAP DEBUT as "Fort Minor", I think with some production from Rockafella...It's supposed to be great, and it's going to be called "The Rising Tied"...and it comes out on November 22nd...and I'm buying it in two seconds (Although frankly Shinoda isn't an UNBELIEVABLE MC...He's pretty cool though, I like him...)
And also...Some of you may heard of Dangerdoom's "The Mouse and the Mask" or at least seen the promotions on Adult Swim...
Underground rap legends MF Doom (Great and weird rapper, you may have heard him on "November Has Come" on the Gorillaz' "Demon Days") and Danger Mouse (Great producer, the mind behind The Grey Album) are making a super crazy good, hyped album, with cameos from ADULT SWIM! Ahahaha, it's so cool, like they have skits from like ATHF and Tom Goes to Mayor in between the songs and stuff. It's like they combined my two favorite things, underground rap and Adult Swim...
I don't really listen to that much rap, but Kanye West is actually okay. I could listen to him. And MF Doom is really freaking good. I guess rap is sorta like rock: in general, the best stuff is underground. The stuff the play on MTV isn't really the best representation of the style.
Mike Shinoda is an excellent example of the kind of rap I don't care for...
In terms of what I more traditionally listen to, I'm sorta looking forward to the new Death Cab for Cutie album. I haven't been listening to a lot of that style of stuff lately, but it sounds pretty good. I'll probably buy it used.
Finally, has anyone heard of Ima Robot? They're a really good indie pop band. Very poppy music a lot of the time, but the lyrics are good - even if the singer is annoying at times - and it sounds nice.
@Giantkiller: I'm not much of a fan of U2. They're just too generic, I guess - and no, I'm not sure what I mean by that. I think that they're basically just a gimmick band, the gimmick being christianity. Their music is just basically guitar pop.

Eh...maybe, but they weren't always guitar pop. Back when they made "Joshua Tree", and "War", and had their nineties fun with "Pop" (which ironically, didn't have much pop in it at all) and "Zooropa"...
Maybe now they're a bit more formulated and guitar pop, and a bit more Christian, with the last two albums, but they're still better than the rest of mainstream rock (Especially crap that mimicks them like Coldplay. I mean, if U2 is formulated now, a bad copies of it suck exponentially more, at least U2 has long stretches of creativity.)
And yeah, Shinoda isn't that great, he and LP are just two of my guilty pleasures...
But then again, Shinoda isn't exactly your typical mainstream rapper like Jay Z and 50 Cent, he'll definitely have different subject material, a different sound, and a more of an underground feel, I mean his guest stars aren't big names, they're respected underground artists like Common and Styles of Beyond...So he's not as mainstream as you think, although I wonder how the mainstream will react to his album...Odd...
I'm so going to buy Kanye West's new album tomorrow...it's going to be awesome...

Like I said, a lot of mainstream rock sucks. Either it's derivative, vaguely poppy music or it's "punk" or "emo" which is really really annoying.
And maybe the reason I don't like u2 is because I've never heard there earlier albums - they were before my time.

I'm not saying his mainstream, it's more that I have a sort of an expectation for how is record will sound and I don't really anticipate liking it. Although I don't know if that expectation is entirely reasonable. Also, I'm not really a big LP fan. So yeah.
A lot of these bands really do deserve for me to at least check them out - but I only have so much money to get other stuff that I anticipate way more. So *meh*
Well, I finally got it, the first day, today (So I could get it for a cheap nine bucks)...And frankly, I'd been waiting for months, listening to the first single (The diamond market-condemning "Diamonds From Sierra Leone"), and absorbing the massive hype, reading the perfect 5/5 review from Rolling Stone (Who'd see that coming? :slant: ).
I gave this album a straight breeze through, and let me say, with all confidence, this is without a doubt the best album of 2005, regardless of musical genre.
Sure, Mesmerize and Demon Days and other albums this year were great, and I'm sure Hypnotize will prove to be as great, but they're just nowhere as balanced and chock full of quality songs every track.
It's just so balanced and so well produced, with the same wry wit and great lyrics you'd expect from a West album, along with many great guest appearances, from Adam Levine hailing from Maroon 5 and Jaimie Foxx to The Game and Nas...
If you're tired of predictable mainstream gangsta crap from 50 Cent, or annoying bling bling rap from P. Diddy, this is the answer, hardcore rap fan or just casual listener, Late Registration proved to be sophisticated but accessible, with underground style and mainstream hype. Kanye did say when this album was in production that he was aiming for the album that you could just listen through, straight through, without skipping any songs at all, and this is most definitely that, I'm loving it.
My favorite songs so far are...well, the whole album frankly, but I'm especially enjoying the hilarious skits, "Gone", "Diamonds From Sierre Leone (Remix)", "Roses", "Gold Digger", and heck most of all of it was great.
I highly recommend it to rap fans, or fans of any type of music in general, it's definitely the best album of 2005, without a doubt. It's definitely gotten huge critical acclaim and fan buzz, and it's inevitably going to sell a hell of a lot and win a good deal of awards. Even if you're not a rap fan, I totally recommend at least illegally downloading it, if you're too stubborn to buy (Wait, no I don't, *wink* that would be immoral).
I've never heard there earlier albums - they were before my time.
What are you, six?
Their last great albums were 1991, 1996, 1998, "Achtung Baby!", "Zooropa", and "Pop", ranked in quality oddly enough, chronologically. Three good 90s albums where they experimented with weirdness and hip songs. They lost a lot of mainstream fans because of that, so eventually I guess they sold their soul in 2000 when they went back to their old formula with "All You Can't Leave Behind" and "How To Dismantle An Atomic Bomb"

15, actually. I was alive for their albums, I just haven't really listened to them, I don't want to buy them, and I dislike illegal downloading. So I might like them, but I probably won't know. None of my friends really like them, so I can't get a burned copy from a friend.
It's alright, I have enough music in my life already, y'know? New DCFC album today, supposed to be pretty good. Also I am looking for forward to the dangerdoom record. est bona.

Awww? Why no downloading? Don't tell me you're morally against it! *vomit* I guess it's true though, Bono wouldn't be able to afford any more illegally downloading, and neither would the record companies, they're pretty impoverished.
And what's DCFC?

Well, the downloading part is more like waiting till I get a laptop. Also, part of it is that my uncle (who I respect greatly) is a musician, so he's against it. So I might at a future date
And DCFC = Death Cab for Cutie, indie band. They're pretty good, I used to like they're stuff a lot more. transatlanticism (their last album) and Give Up by the Postal Service, the side project of the lead singer, ben gifford, basically got me into alt rock. DCFC is pretty melodic, and the Postal Service is really synth poppy - no actual instruments, just synth, but it's not like techno, it's not driven by the beat - but I used to be a lot more into that stuff.
I like a variety of stuff, but I'm mainly interested in hard rock and rapcore. Just a band list off the top of my head:
Limp Bizkit (Chocolate Starfish and Significant Other albums, more recent ones suck)
Green Day
Sum 41
Red Hot Chilli Peppers
Blink 182
Rise Against
Rage Against the Machine
Drowning Pool
Papa Roach
Queen
50 Cent
Deftones
System of a Down
Disturbed
Linkin Park
Jay-Z
Aerosmith
Nickelback
Offspring
Black Eyed Peas
Best albums so far this year:
Sufjan Stevens: Invites You To Come On, Feel The Illinoise!
Stevens explores a kind of uniquely American mythology with some catchy melodies and beautiful moments
Kanye West:Late Registration
Good raps over amazing production
The Decemberists:Picaresque
Not as good as their earlier work, especially the EPs but a lot of amazing songs. All the songs are good actually, it just doesn't really feel put together well as an album
Caribou:The Milk of Human Kindness
Really good electronic music. If hippies had made techno, this is whaat it would have sounded like
Stars:Set Yourself on Fire
Underrated pop album with good lyrics, catchy melodies, and decent production/instrumentation
as mentioned by the pimp who likes hedburg, the verve is awesome. Led Zepplin is the greatest band of all time. Hands down. No question. best modern band is probably the Foo Fighters.
I think the most essential cds in my collection that everyone should have are Clann Zu-Rua, Iced Earth-the Dark Saga, and Propagandhi-Today's Empires Tommorrow's Ashes these are great albums that realy changed how I looked at music.
Hmmmm...

Goodnight, Salvation! \m/ \m/

So *meh*

I'm sure I'll be listening to it a lot... My brother is a big Kanye fan. So if I like it I'll just get a copy from him...

Good raps over amazing production

Not as good as their earlier work, especially the EPs but a lot of amazing songs. All the songs are good actually, it just doesn't really feel put together well as an album

Really good electronic music. If hippies had made techno, this is whaat it would have sounded like
