Well, I lean towards the metal/hardcore side of the spectrum, although I do have a few oddities here and there that I enjoy, so I'll contribute what I consider some of the most essential in those categories. I could make it a huge list, but I'll try to contain it to twenty or so:
-Deftones "Around The Fur"
-Weezer "Weezer (Blue Album)"
-Converge "Jane Doe"
-The Blinding Light "The Ascension Attempt"
-Hopesfall "No Wings To Speak Of"
-Millencolin "Pennybridge Pioneers"
-Botch "We Are The Romans"
-Training For Utopia "Plastic Soul Impalement"
-Normajean "Bless The Martyr, Kiss The Child"
-Mindless Self Indulgence "Frankenstein Girls Will Seem Strangely Sexy"
-Nasum "Human 2.0"
-The Dillinger Escape Plan "Calculating Infinity"
-The Red Chord "Fused Together In Revolving Doors"
-Poison The Well "The Opposite Of December"
-All Else Failed "This Never Happened"
-Coheed And Cambria "In Keeping Secrets Of Silent Earth: 3"
-Zao "Liberate Te Ex Infernis"
-Tenacious D "S/T"
-Turmoil "The Process Of..."
-Dredg "El Cielo"
I have to agree with Lota. Not by any measure are many of the albums mentioned in this thread "essential." Several of them are quite derivative, in fact, and thus would never be on a list of essential music. Others are just not important or unique enough to be considered essential.
Actually, it is the Verve Pipe who does Freshman. Both groups got hot around the same time so they get mistaken for each other a lot.
Derf, I knew that. *embarrassed*
@ Jedit: I didn't group them together, idk if you just had that at a reply that happened to be in a post with my quote or what...but I think they're two different bands, and I can appreciate both at different times.
Hey guys
i was opening this thread to talk about you favourite type of music and/or bands. I hope someone (especially me :p) will find new and great bands which he never heard about before.
So i'll make the beginning.
My favourite band are:
Jimmy Eat World
Radiohead
Blink182
Incubus
Oasis
Beatsteaks
Read Hot Chili Peppers
Can anyone who reads this give me tips which other bands do a similar type of music?
-Gnoll
That's not my type of music, although I do think some of those bands are pretty cool.
You want stuff that's similar? This won't be so accurate, but I'll give it a shot:
Nirvana, Soundgarden, Bush, U2, REM, Limp Bizkit, Pearl Jam, Dave Matthews Band.
As for myself, here are a bunch of bands I like in no particular order:
Megadeth, Manowar, Metallica, Slayer, Pantera, Deicide, Edguy, Dio, Tobias Sammet's Avantasia, Anthrax, AC/DC, Iron Maiden, Judas Priest, Black Sabbath, Symphony X, White Skull, Metal Church, Black Label Society, Gamma Ray, Helloween, Hammerfall, Blind Guardian, Iced Earth, Kamelot, Kreator, Mercyful Fate, Coroner, Testament, Exodus, Queensryche, Doomsword, Bolt Thrower, The Scorpions, Twisted Sister, Napalm Death, Yngwie Malmsteen.
Pearl Jam, Soundgarden, Unified Theory, Grant Lee Buffalo, Nirvana, Radiohead, Mother Love Bone, Temple of the Dog, Mad Season, Collective Soul, Interpol, The Postal Service, Cake, The Killers, Jamiroquai, and many, many other supporting bands.
Arkham, the 1920's. Investigators battle horrors from beyond time and space, risking life and sanity while conspiracies of cultists and malign servitors seek gateways for their outer gods to return...
Soon, the stars will be right! Great Cthulhu shall rise!
This is the essential music thread and only one person has mentioned Modest Mouse (erasmus, your my new favorite person)
Go out and buy The Moon and Antarctica and Good News for people who love bad news. Those two albums have got to be the some of the greatest and most diverse music ever.
Sgt. Pepper is a must buy (rolling stone ranked it 1 of 500) and you can have an essential music collection without it. Personally I like Rubber Soul better, but thats just because Sgt.pepper is so damn good that I listened to it too much.
Everclear (Erasmus does it again!) is awesome. Their new stuff is Iffy but Sparkle and Fade and World of Noise (not on a major label, so its hard to find) are just freaking great.
The original Drowning Pool album Sinner. Its a must buy for anyone who likes music, even if your not a fan of hard rock (I'm not, but I love it.)
Also someone was trying to remember what doors collection was the best. I'd go with Legacy it has EVERY doors hit plus every other good song they produced. Its around 40 songs for 20 bucks and it includes the entire Celebration of the Lizard, which is definitive Morrison.
I hope other people catch on that every song in their collection is not ESSENTIAL.
I hope other people catch on that every song in their collection is not ESSENTIAL.
I hope this comment wasn't directed at me, but I'll reply to it as if it was.
Some people simply listen to other genres than those suggested so far. I understand a lot of people get their kicks out of older rock bands such as Pink Floyd, The Beatles, etc. But myself and a lot of new generation kids (I'm twenty just for reference) simply don't relate to that music as much anymore. I'm not saying that holds true for everyone, but I personally have a fixation with searching for the best that I can find within genres of music which I enjoy. Even though many people haven't necessarily heard of a certain band or disc yet, doesn't make it any less essential. Basically my point is even though I'm not suggesting the same bands as everyone else doesn't make them any less essential. It just means my tastes differ from most, and that those who are interested in a particular genre, such as hardcore/metal, should check those albums out, as IMO, they are essentials to the genre.
And BTW, I wasn't listing every song I have, as my CD collection spans over a thousand discs not including any burned ones I have. I basically said if I could only have twenty albums on a desert album, which would they be, and those are what I came up with.
And I'm sorry if this wasn't in a way directed at me, but it had to get out there anyways.
I third the cry of "One too many Music-Related topics", especially when this one is in the wrong forum to boot. How many music threads are there now, anyway?
And Jimmy Eat World and Oasis rock. And Ljoss mentioned Bush, who also rock but I swear I'm the only person who still likes them.
This is the essential music thread and only one person has mentioned Modest Mouse (erasmus, your my new favorite person)

Beef i couldnt agree with you more. I was being hardcore bright eyes at the time (what an oxymoron ), but I cant believe that i overlooked them! I second beef's post in saying that Modest Mouse has the most diverse music ever. The lyrics might not make sense (like Bukowski), but the song as a whole is really good, and it seems to leave some kind of point in it for you.

Word, definitely true. Raid's the air-to-ground missile. Boiling water's the hydrogren bomb.
We're already talking about music, in several threads. It would appear as though what you're looking for would be in 'Essential Music.' Please do your best to read around next time, and also, this would belong in entertainment.
Right now, I'm really into this 50 Cent song off his album, The Massacre, called "A Baltimore Love Thing".
Well, I thought I’d never see the day where I actually like a 50 Cent song, not because I blindly hate rap like so many imbeciles, but because I’m into more underground rap and hihop, songs with meaning or intelligence that aren’t just about ho’s and guns like mainstream rap is…
But this song is really quite nice, it’s a loveletter from heroin to a female addict of his, and there’s lots of great lines and metaphors in it.
You see, 50 Cent has done love songs a lot, and they all basically suck, and his persona in them is basically:
“I’m a cold and sensitive hustler with millions of dollars and heart of gold whose world revolves around sex, but also somehow, commitment, and I have unbelievable confidence and swagger, no woman can resist me”
But insert this into a song where he’s playing Heroin and it just makes the content even more disturbing and well-written.
Here's some lines from it:
"Girl, I'm missin' you, come and see me soon
Tie your arm up, put that lighter under that spoon
Now put that needle to ya arm princess, stick it in
Relapse you back *****, don't ever try that again
All that **** I did for you, I made you feel good
We have a love thing, you treatin' this like its just a fling
What we have is more sacred than a vow or a ring
You broke my heart, you dirty ***** I won't forget what you did
If you give birth, I'll already be in love with your kids"
"I hung out with Marvin when he wrote "Sexual Healing"
Kurt Cobain even good friends, Ozzy Ozbourne too
I be with rock stars, see you lucky I'm ****in' with you
I chill with Frankie Lyeman and Jimmy Hendrix crew"

This is a random question but who here listens to GORILLAZ?....And I'm not talking about just "Clint Eastwood" I'm talking about there music generaly....usualy when i ask this q's I always get "yeah I loved Clint Eastwood" "didn't they make that song Clint Eastwood?"..
I think it's funny that I've seen this question asked so many times in this forum... I think it's pretty well established that there are several Gorillaz fans here, and that they listen to more than just 'Clint Eastwood'.
