As a giant metalhead, I was reluctant to get into jazz but as my school jazz band's lead trombonist, I absolutely love it. My favorite artist is Count Basie, but my favorite tune is Duke Ellington's Caravan.
Never really liked the classic stuff, never really delved, but check out Flying Lotus and BadBadNotGood, newer, more modern spins on Jazz. I dunno if you'll love it for being different, or hate it for not being pure, but it's always good to explore a little bit.

Jazz is a broad and diverse 'genre', if you can call it simply that.
I like numerous subgenres of jazz and have even more favourites, including Chet Baker, Cab Calloway, Billy Cobham, Paul Desmond, Gil Evans, Stan Getz, Benny Goodman, Fletcher Henderson, Lee Konitz, Sondre Lerche, Glenn Miller, Charlie Parker, Oscar Peterson, and Sunny Rollins. Some of the other guys that have been mentioned are among these too.
I enjoy their strong rock influence, being that rock is one of my favorite genres (though not in the past 10 years or so) and their energy is great. I also appreciate their covers because I like the artists they cover.
I'm a university jazz voice major, so naturally I'm more into the 'old school straight ahead' vocal stuff, rather than the more modern instrumental virtuoso stuff.
A great place to learn the history of Jazz and how it's progressed is "The History of Jazz by Ken Burns". It's on NetFlix if you have it. It's long but well worth sitting through.

I suppose that's one way to approach some of the classic stuff, or if that really does it for you.

Favorite tune has definitely got to be this Mingus/Mitchell tune. Here's a neat version.
The Coltrane and Johnny Hartman album is definitely #1 on my list of "stuck on a desert island albums". Check it out if you haven't.
