Here are the top 10 most listened to songs on my itunes (encompasses several genres). This doesn't mean they are my personal favorites, but here they are:
1. Arcturus -Demon Painter Best metal vocalist there is, IMO. ICS Vortexes vocal range is incredible.
2. Eisbrecher - Kann den liebe Sunde sein I am a big fan of German music and the language. Here is a relatively newer song from Eisbrecher.
3. Unheilig - Herz aus Eis More "pop" like, but still a great song.
4. System of a Down - Attack Not a band I listen to often. It must have been a phase. Still a good band.
5. Meshuggah - Rational Gaze How is it that Meshuggah was not mentioned yet with all the metal heads here?
6. Многоточие - Убей Барыгу! Hip hop... Am I the only one here that branches outside of English music?
7. Grandaddy - Now it's on Good band, a little monotonous.
8. Би-2 - Bowie Russian pop band. Very good music if you like pop.
9. Ruoska - Alasin Finish NDH band. One of their better songs.
10. Dark Tranquillity - On Your Time My Favorite DT song from my favorite DT album.
Dude do NOT try to argue. Music is solely based on opinion but he thinks that everything he says is absolute fact and that everyone should agree with him or just stop listening to music. Best to just put him on your ignore list and just move on because you are going to have a more intellectual conversation talking to a goat.
Not really, I just don't like when people spread misinformation and in general, act like ignorami regarding music. Such as your blind dislike of anything good, for example.
Anybody else see this complete idiocy? Seriously? Blatant baiting.
If you think you're being baited into an attack like this, please don't oblige them. Infraction issued.

My sig is not trolling. And it's not opinion, it's fact.
And I'm not changing it. I'm not gonna be browbeated by a moderator, simply because you don't like the fact that I'm bringing to light that the staff suspends half-decent posters, while allowing trolls to run rampant.
Well, you've still got about fourteen hours before you're infracted for noncompliance. Talk to whomever you want.

I'd actually argue that Garm, Arcturus' previous vocalist, is way better. I think a better case would have been ICS' work in Borknagar (Which I think is better than when he was with Arcturus), but Garm overshadows him there as well. Regardless of who's better, there's a lot worse you can do than ICS Vortex.

I thought that Garm was a better fit for Arcturus at first; however, Sideshow Symphonies grew on me fast. If it wasn't for Vortexes vocal range I would say Garm would be equal.
I actually agree with this in general. Their bassist makes me sick, it is extremely repetitive throughout every album. But I can't discount that they have produced a few really good songs, Rational Gaze being one of them.
1.2080 [Yeasayer] - This song encapsulates the bittersweet nature of our day and age. Lead singer Chris Keating sings the line "I can't sleep when I think about the times we're livin in / I can't sleep when I think about the future I was born into." Despite this initial pessimism, the song goes on to encourage life, happiness, and growth, all while emphasizing mortality and the temporary nature of the human condition. "In 2080 I'll surely be dead / So don't look ahead / Never look ahead" is how Keating summarizes his future, and goes on to sing one of the most haunting lyrics I've ever heard in a song: "We can all grab at the chance to be handsome farmers / You can have 21 sons and be blood when they marry my daughters / And the pain that we left in the station will stay in a jar behind us / We can pickle the pain into blue ribbon winners at country contests." As someone who suffers from depression, the thought that pain can be left in a jar somewhere has always seemed so sublime to me. This is easily my favorite song of the past decade.
2. For Reverend Green [Animal Collective] - This song reminds me of wolves howling at the moon on the eve of the apocalypse. Animal Collective is three best friends playing music out of their love for the art, and this song is their masterpiece. Avery Tare's lyrical prowess has never been sharper, and the lyrics "Now I think it's all right we're together / Now I think that's a riot / Now I think it's the best we've ever played it / Now I think that's a riot" summarize his love of life, his friends, and his music. At the climax of the song, when he repeats "For Reverend Green" louder and louder until he screams, the passion Animal Collective has for their music is palpable.
3.This Year [The Mountain Goats] - This song deals with lead singer John Darnielle's relationship with drugs and his abusive father during his adolescent years. The chorus "I am gonna make it through this year / If it kills me" resonates for anyone who has ever felt that tomorrow is going to be worse than today, yet life is still worth living. It's just a beautiful piece of music.
4.Old Friend [Future Islands] - I almost put this as my number 1, simply because it's so wild and erratic that I've never heard anything quite like it. The Future Islands lead singer has a guttural croon that makes the bizarre lyrics "I swing myself down from these trees / To help me laugh brushfires again" seem that much more intriguing. I have no idea what he's singing about in Old Friend, but I'd sure as hell love to be able to "laugh brushfires." An inexplicable song, and a great one.
5.Atlas [Battles] - "People won't be people when they hear this sound / There's a glowing in the dark at the edge of town / People won't be people when they hear this sound / Won't you show me what begins at the edge of town?" is how Atlas, the 7 minute math rock epic by Battles begins. This song has it all: balls to the wall drumming, bizarre lyrics, catchy riffs, and best of all it will make everyone get on the dance floor the moment it starts.
6.Oh, It's Such a Shame [Jay Reatard] - A masterpiece from an artist who died far before his prime. Jay Reatard died of a coke overdose last year at the age of 26. At that point, he'd already released numerous albums and was an indie legend. After his death, bands such as Arcade Fire started performing his songs.
7.Here's Your Future [The Thermals] - "God reached his hand down from the sky / God asked Noah if he wanted to die / He said 'No Sir, Oh No Sir!"
8.All These Things That I've Done [The Killers] - "These changes ain't changin me / the cold hearted boy I used to be"
9.All My Friends [LCD Soundsystem] - "With a face like a dad and a laughable stand / You can sleep on the plane or review what you said / When you're drunk and the kids look impossibly tan / You think over and over 'Hey, I'm finally dead!"
10.Gorgeous [Kanye West] - "Everybody who tried to blackball me / Forgot about two things: My black balls"
I hope I'm not beating a dead horse, but I wanted to chime in about the logic of Elyxr's first post. To say that it is a logical fallacy is not entirely true. The 'problem' with this thread is that the definition of "top 10" is quite vague. As any student of logic would know, one of the first things you must do when analyzing an argument or statement is to define all your terms. As many people have mentioned, "top 10" can be quite subjective and can be defined in many different ways. Elyxr was stipulating his own definition of "top 10" as the "most popular" songs, and therefore his argument was perfectly sound. If he had said "These are the most popular songs therefore they are the best songs", then yes, that would be an appeal to popularity. However, I believe his statement is more along the lines of "By defining top 10 as the most popular, these would be considered the top 10 because they are the most downloaded." This is not a logical fallacy. Another thing you would learn in a logic class is determining the "soundness" of an argument, where, for example, you could have a false statement yet the argument remains sound. As an example of this, you could look at the statement "If I am a martian then I am from Mars," and realize that while neither statement is true (I am not martian nor am I from Mars), it is still a sound argument. I think Elyxr's post was a perfectly sound argument.
Now as for the real topic at hand, here are my personal, subjective top 10 songs of the last 10 years (in no particular order, with no more than 1 song from any given album):
1) Tool - Lateralus (awesome time signature changes, especially the hi-hat which is in 5/8 played on top of the guitars in 6/8, creates a very cool "spiral" effect which is also a lyrical theme of the song... genius!) 2) Tool - Right in two (don't hear a lot of songs that have an 11 beat time signature and sound this good) 3) Radiohead - Jigsaw falling into place (very interesting "sandwich" structure to the song where the opening chord progression comes back at the end, but with different instrumentation) 4) Radiohead - Optimistic (actually just realized this song also has that same "sandwich" structure, but lots of other reasons to like this song as well. definitely my favorite from Kid A) 5) Coldplay - 42 (I love the middle section of this song. runner up from this album is "Yes") 6) A Perfect Circle - Renholder (thoroughly enjoyed this whole album) 7) Nine Inch Nails - Only (I really like a lot of the songs on this album [With Teeth] but I chose this one because it's a great song to sing along to while driving down the freeway, and I love some of the imagery he evokes with the lyrics) 8) Postal Service - This Place is a Prison (Music has this great ability to remind you of certain time, or a certain place, or certain friends and this whole album has a special meaning to me in that way which reminds me of certain time in my life. It's hard to pick any one song from this album as my favorite, but this is one of them) 9) Dredg - Elephant in the Delta Waves (very cool concept album which is supposedly based off of a Dahli painting) 10) Deadmau5 - I Remember (I'm not the biggest house fan but I love the harmonies & the melody, and the singing is just beautiful)
Just in case anybody is actually interested in anything beyond their own opinion. Here's the top selling singles (thanks Google!) from 2000 to 2009: (if anybody cares, the actual "decade is from 2000 to 2009, yup..that's ten years! This decade will be from 2010 to 2019. New decades start on multiples of ten)

2 Franz Ferdinand: Take Me Out
3 Missy Misdemeanor Elliott: Get Ur Freak On
4 Beyonce: Crazy in Love
5 Missy Misdemeanor Elliott: Work It

Elyxr already tried this argument and it just ended up in a bunch of flaming and infractions... I don't think that was the point of this thread.

Most popular does not=best. This has already been discussed. Also, I never said a thing about a decade. This thread is for everything from the year 2000 and on. Lets not get off-topic again.
I believe that I have enough social competence to slip into a party or two, potentially wooing some attractive females that would not mind spending the evening performing the booty dance on me.
1. Green day: American Idiot
This song defined an era, the era of post-9/11 paranoia, where a nation was dumb enough to elect the worst leader America has ever had. It was literally the anthem of people who knew better for years and years. because it defined this very era that we are rating, it has to be #1.
Point out the part where I said that American Idiot is the best just because it was popular. You can't. Because I didn't. Being popular has nothing to do with being the best.
