As I understand it, there are people who have already seen the Veronica Mars movie, which is scheduled to be released today.
My question to those of you who have is how much of the series one needs to watch, or should watch, before seeing it. Could a person theoretically watch the movie without seeing any of the series? If not, how much would be a good amount before going in?
I haven't seen it yet nor did I watch much of VM. I expect that it will be very approachable for those who haven't watched the show and a sort of "where are they now?" for those who have. Like Serenity. Heck, I hope this does well so Joss makes another Firefly movie or even a Buffy movie based on the show. Nostalgia is kind of annoying sometimes(e.g. G.I. Joe, Transformers, etc) but if done right can add something to pop culture instead of merely profiting from it.
I cannot stress strongly enough to not see this movie unless you've followed the show to its conclusion, and definitely don't see it if you've not seen season one to its conclusion.
I ended up walking out a little after midway. Not because it's a bad film, but I haven't seen the series to full, and I didn't want to see the third act without doing the requisite legwork to fully appreciate it.
So put simply: this is not Serenity where you can come in having never seen the show and be mostly ok with the whole thing. This is more towards the "Pokemon Movie" end of the spectrum.
Its not showing locally so I'll watch it on demand some time soon. If only to see if watching it with no background is really that bad.
I will guarantee you now that isn't advised. The movies is designed for people who have seen the show, as characters will not have any introduction as to who they are, and will spoil entire seasons in off-hand throwaway lines.
For instance, the spoiler to season one is just casually referenced. To hear that is to ruin season one for you, which starts out rocky but is actually rewarding to watch. So basically, watching the movie will only spoil what is quite a fun ride for you with minimal gain involved.
If you have Amazon on demand, I would recommend powering through the three seasons of the show first.
I enjoyed it a lot, but I've watched the whole series. You definitely need to see Season 2, and at least some of Season 3 to appreciate who Piz is, but it's pretty obvious he's the genuine nice guy love interest.
Honestly, just Seasons 1 and 2 are fine. Season 3 wasn't especially good, and it changed the format from cases of the week to a case every six episodes, which obviously didn't work out.
I didn't remember any of the primary characters except for Veronica's crew.
I didnt mind the shows at all i thought it was pretty good. The movie does sound pretty awful but i will give it a watch. I hope its not that bad as you guys say. I initially started watching it because Amanda Sayfried was in it.

I'm not saying it's an awful film. I'm saying that it's a movie that was meant to cater specifically to fans of Veronica Mars. As such, those who aren't familiar with the show will be lost.
And having rewatched the movie after seeing all three seasons, yes, this is definitely a reward for those who watched Veronica Mars. The movie is very good. I really enjoyed it.
Again, I wouldn't try it if you haven't watched Veronica Mars at least through its second season, but if you have, go for it. I think as far as revivals-of-tv-shows-as-movies go it was certainly one of the best, if not the most accessible.

For reference, I'm on disk two of season two.

Agreed. Season Three doesn't seem to add much.
"Appreciate" might not be the best term for it.
