Did anyone else think they butchered the future of the nova corps? They were pretty useless and didn't have the powers they did in the comics. Everyone had the ranking of a centurion which is like the elite of the elite. I mean Glenn Close as Nova Prime? I mean really?
Other than that this movie was fun. It wasn't that good but I enjoyed it.
This movie is a blast. It's not the next Star Wars or '09 Star Trek, and I admit I'm a little disappointed by that because my expectations were built up so high. But it's a thoroughly and satisfyingly irreverent romp through a portion of the Marvel Universe that was in grave danger of taking itself too seriously in spite of its blatant cheesiness. And it is cheesy - even setting aside all the sciencey stuff, you just can't get away with naming your SF characters things like "Nebula" or "Thanos the Mad Titan" anymore, unless, apparently, you're Marvel. A couple of the supporting actors seemed to be phoning it in (I'm looking at you, Glenn Close), but the leads had great energy and chemistry, and - of all things - Dave Bautista's comic timing is a revelation.
And in how many movies does the protagonist actually get to challenge the big bad to a dance-off?
I guess I'm in the very small minority, but I really wasn't that impressed with this movie. Like it wasn't..bad. It was fine. But everyone is just raving about it, including some claims of it being 'Marvel's best movie' and 'as good as the original Star Wars' trilogy.
Possibly off-topic, but I don't actually get the love for the original Star Wars Ep. 4 to begin with.
And in how many movies does the protagonist actually get to challenge the big bad to a dance-off?
Perhaps one of the most hilarious ways to completely break the sudden 'gritty/dark' feel you start to get at that point to be honest.
And yes Bautista is perhaps the single most astonishing discovery of the entire film
the other surprise being that Vin Diesel can actually be a good actor if you have him mocap and limit him to only 3 words XD... ok 5 words at the end of the film...

Ok, I'm going to make a concerted effort to focus on the positives instead of the negatives.
Well, ok, one negative: Zoe Saldana's performance is DREADFUL. Absolutely horrible, dragged the movie down.
But that said, some positives:
1. Bradley Cooper not only was perfect for the role, not only gave a great performance, he actually carried the damn movie. Bradley Cooper. Did you know he could do that? I didn't!
2. Likewise, Chris Pratt as the lead gave a fun performance. The two of them, along with a strong core cast of characters (with the obvious exception of Zoe Saldana) were able to elevate a script that really has the caliber of a Syfy original movie into something enjoyable to watch.
Accolades in particular to David Bautista. Really, just reflect on how the review for this movie sounds like an alternate reality. Bradley Cooper gives an Oscar-worthy performance, Vin Diesel is heartwarming and great, and David Bautista could be the funniest one in the film. Mind blown.
It actually makes me really happy. I love how the movie's theme of "you can't judge a book by its cover" is exemplified in its own cast.
3. The movie was charming. And funny. It's often hard to lose sight of how much mileage you can get out of a movie that has both those elements.
4. Groot. Just everything about him. Good job Vin Diesel.
5. Thanos. We get to see him. We get to hear him talk. This got me stoked for when the Avengers take him on.
6. The movie did not become a romance between Starlord and Gamora. There was no romantic plot. They hinted at it, but then reversed course, probably when they discovered how ******* boring Gamora is. Great move, whoever made that call.
7. That thing Starlord does at the climactic scene in order to defeat the villain was hilarious.
Howard the Duck was ******* amazing. It was like "huh, I wonder if they really are going to referene everything Lucas has ever touched.

Anyway,

You can definitely tell that Marvel is owned by Disney due to the fact that
They only beat Ronin due to dancing and singing.
I loved the film, but due to three "WTF how is that even possible to live through" moments I have to only give it a 7-8 out of ten. Definitely recommending it to everyone and buying it, but it wasn't a "Must see six times in the theater" movie for me.

You know, I honestly want to know how Darth Vader would react to Obi-Wan or Luke challenging him to a dance off instead of a light-sabre duel.
Or how the Eye of Sauron would have reacted if Aragorn started dancing in front of the Gates of Mordor instead of throwing a bunch of threats.
Oh, and Highroller reminded me something that I forgot- Gamora sucked. I don't know why Zoe Saldana keeps getting these roles; I don't think she's a good actor.

What's interesting is that I'm seeing scenes of half-naked Gamora in the trailers, and I don't recall that ever being in the movie. Which makes me think there was supposed to be this whole romantic subplot between Quill and Gamora that went much further than we got in the final product, but was cut because Saldana was so bad at playing her.

I would rank it behind Winter Soldier, Avengers, Iron Man 1 & 3 in terms of level of quality.
Oh no way. No way is Iron Man 3 a better movie than this one. Iron Man 3 was a horrendous, boring, mindless film that tried to pass itself off as deep and meaningful.
I don't know if I'd say it was Marvel's BEST movie, but it's definitely up there for me. It was very charming, and quite funny, as well. Not to jump on the Groot bandwagon, but he was fantastic. Gamora's character was weak, as was Karen Gillian's - I feel like they could've gone at least a little more in-depth on the backstory there, for both of them - but overall, the cast was pretty great and did a wonderful job. The writing was pretty good, though I agree with the point raised earlier about the Nova Corps.

Only three? It practically turns into a drinking game even if you just assume Quill did something to make his hair indestructible.
The only three that really stood out to me as being way too over the top was:
1: Quill and Gamora surviving in outer space.
2: Drax having his lungs punctured/whatever the hell Groot did to him to revive him.
3: Drax surviving Rocket crashing into both Drax and Ronin.

Oath of the Gatewatch; the set that caused the competitive community to freak out over Basic Lands.
1: None of the characters in this film are human. Part of the point of the Cosmic side of Marvel is that 'superpowers' are relatively common and normal. They also explicitly state that Quill is only half-human, which is probably how he survived touching the Infinity Stone. Gamora is enhanced to the point of Captain America-like strength. If Cap can survive in ice for 70 years, these two can survive in space for few minutes.
2: Groot saved Drax by puncturing his lung, allowing air to get in and some of the liquid he was drowning on to get out. Drax healed up quickly after, because he's superhuman.
3: Drax already survived being hammered by Ronan into a metal wall, severely denting it, and came back out right as rain. In the comics, he's at Hulk-level strength, so cut him some slack on survivability.

Sepiriel, have you never seen the Iron Giant? I don't think anyone doubted Vin's ability to successfully pull off voice role with no speaking... fantastically.
In any case, I'm really excited for Thanos in Avengers 3, and also for Guardians of the Galaxy 2. This movie was like Farscape on steroids (my favorite TV show). I loved all the references:
The Collector's set piece was a treat. COSMO! Yay! I think I almost squealed a little bit when I saw him.
Howard the Duck was pretty funny, but I wish it was a more substantial stinger. Like hinting at J'Son.
Also, did you guys catch Adam Warlock's Cocoon and Beta Ray Bill in cages? I'm only guessing at Bill, but there was a bright red cape and hulking figure in one of the cages. Can't wait for the blu-ray to check it all out.

If that's the case, fair enough. This is my first actual foray into GotG, but those just seemed over the top.
Of course, this means watching it again, to give the scenes a new perspective. Of course of course. No possible way to skip out on this step.

Yeah, on rewatching, pay attention to what everyone does and can survive in the film. Gamora can leap at least a single story by herself. Drax can take some serious damage, and is strong enough to rip a drone in the Nova prison in two.

I would imagine Drax is a special case, as all the other inmates are terrified of him.

Sepiriel, have you never seen the Iron Giant? I don't think anyone doubted Vin's ability to successfully pull off voice role with no speaking... fantastically.
My one contention with the Iron Giant is that it is a classically animated film, i think Vin did an amazing job in that one i will not deny it but in my mind a lot of the workload was offloaded of him by virtue of the medium.
In the case with Groot they did Mo-Cap him which means he had a much deeper level of involvement, Groot is compelling for its actions but also for his facial/body?bark? language and that is where Vin Diesel actually showed he could do it.
But thats just my opinion (and again Iron Giant IS a hell of a film and its still a hell of a role for Vin, i just dont think it defined him as the "OMG he can act with no script!!!" type of thing)

My point was that the characters are very similar, which is why I had faith. Although I should note that Vin Diesel didn't motion capture Groot, that was the the Director (Gunn's) brother, who also played Yondu's number two.

I did not know about the actual mo-cap, my bad, what i actually meant was the face capture, i thought they did some for him on that, if its still not him then well it does improve the comparison with the Iron Giant actually.

After seeing it last night, I can safely say I am thoroughly impressed with the movie. I like the avengers-esque team assembly style and I enjoy the different characters. Also the amount of comedy was spot on.
I think that this is my favourite Marvel movie to date; I just feel that it has more heart than most (all?) of the other Disney Marvel films. I'll also echo the love for the ensemble cast, minus Zoe Saldana as I thought that her performance was so bland and wooden.
I didn't really like the villains in this movie, besides Yondu. Ronan and Thanos just felt so melodramatic and one-note (though this is accurate to the comics).
GotG has, by far, the greatest soundtrack from any Marvel film, and I really enjoyed the way the music was integrated into the story.
As an aside, I got really confused from above posts talking about Ronin and his role as the bad guy (in the comics, Ronin is an entirely different character altogether). Ronan the Accuser = crazy Kree zealot; Ronin = various individuals (notably Clint Barton (Hawkeye) and Maya Lopez (Echo)), and a member of several Avengers teams.
