Guardians is probably my favorite Marvel movie as it is by far the most fun and entertaining. The characters don't take themselves too seriously and the soundtrack helps take the movie to the next level. Ronan was the perfect big bad for the film as him being so serious and fanatical creates a great contrast that makes the dance off scene at the end all the more enjoyable.
Plus it has probably one of my favorite badass scenes in a movie where Yondu is surrounded and you are assuming that he is going to take them up on their offer, but no, he whistles and kills all of them with his arrow thingy. I literally was sitting with my mouth open in joy after seeing that.
Saw it yesterday. Thought it was great and very funny. I didn't like it quite as much as Avengers or Winter Soldier, but it was still excellent.
Chris Pratt is fantastic and has some great scenes. If you like him at all in Parks and Rec you'll love him in this movie. Rocket and Groot are extremely well done. They found a lot of creative things for Groot to do and hats off to Bradley Cooper giving Rocket the perfect attitude. They also did a great job in their use of Batista as Drax. They way they used him is just about the perfect way to use someone whose acting talents are, let's say, questionable. He ends up with a lot of great lines and his timing is perfect.
There were some small things I wish had been better, like Gamora and Nebula were kind of meh for me, and I don't remember Drax ever getting to show his stuff (it seemed like he was mostly there to get beat up constantly), and Thanos wasn't nearly scary or imposing enough for me, but those are small nitpicks to an otherwise very entertaining and funny movie.
I also thought Yondu's whistling thing was kind of stupid but I guess some people thought it was cool. The one thing that redeemed it a little for me is when I realized that it was a call back to the original Guardians of the Galaxy (ie the one from 30 years ago that almost nobody read and has no relation to the current Guardians). Yondu was the archer who could control his arrows by whistling.
Yeah, this was definitely my favorite Marvel movie. Much like my now-second-favorite Iron Man 1, it didn't take itself seriously. I think the key to doing superhero movies properly is to either find ways to avoid the unbearably cheesy aspects or just embrace them head-on and revel in how ridiculous it all is. The soundtrack was perfect. The acting was perfect - especially Chris Pratt, Dave Bautista, and Bradley Cooper. Speaking of whom, Rocket easily stole the entire movie for me, I now count him as one of my favorite characters of all time. My only real complaint is that the villains were pretty one-dimensional and dull; I took a bathroom break during the scene with Thanos and Ronan talking about something.

I've heard Starfox and Starhawk both thrown out as candidates, namely because of connections with characters already in the movie and because of what Yondu says about his dad (that he's kind of a dick).

What do you all think?
Yeah, honestly, I was thinking Starfox seems likely - wouldn't that be a heartfelt family reunion?
But, it makes sense, IMO, given Starlord's persona as a womanizer prior to his meeting of Gamora.

I prefer that idea to Starfox, just because Starfox doesn't seem like enough of a payoff to me to be worth changing it. Most of the audience has no idea who that is anyway. It would also help integrate the Guardians with the rest of the Marvel cinematic universe if his father turns out to be Asgardian. I really like the idea, although I wonder if Loki might be a better choice than Odin (more Hiddleston would be a good thing).
