It's pretty fantastic and had me in laughter tears in a number of places.
This is not just one long commercial, but a fun romp that plays with some genre tropes and has some thoroughly touching character moments by Will Ferrel (!!!) that I wouldnt have thought possible before now. And it has some pretty kickass action sequences for anyone who has ever wondered what it would be like for your legos to actual fight
I saw this and agree that its awesome. I didn't make a thread because I saw it at a preview and didn't want to spoil it for anyone. Seriously, skip Robocop and all the other trash movies and go see the Lego movie. Its the best use of Morgan Freeman's voice. Ever. Will Arnett's Batman is amazing and worth the cost of the movie by itself. There's a lot more I could say but spoilers, even a week after the fact, will take away from the immersion and this is a good movie to get immersed in.
Even some of the little things I didnt catch till the credits make the stuff funnier, like Channing Tatum and Jonah Hill voicing Superman and Green Latern, respectively, makes the bickering even funnier
Seriously though, who would have thought that Will Farrell could make you cry?
The movie is so balls-to-the-wall zany in its first two acts that it could have just kept on doing that until the end and it would have been joyous. But then the third act has that twist. At first you're not sure where they're going with it, and it could have ruined the movie, but it is woven so perfectly into the story, is executed so flawlessly, and results in a climax that is so touching that it shifts the movie from outrageously fun to truly amazing.
The broad part of the third act twist was obvious to me as soon as they showed us a wormhole, where else could a wormhole go when dimensional travel otherwise involved just walking but making it as good as they did was a huge surprise. I saw the movie on the basis of of the blooper reel and I really didn't expect their to be emotional beats even if they introduced plot holes
I wrapped my post, but this thread is discussion of the movie and you should probably avoid internet discussions of properties if you havent seen them yet.
Amazing movie. The obvious comparison is to Toy Story - not just because there are talking toys, but because the writing is really smart and inventive with that premise, and takes us to surprising emotional places. And it is also so damn funny.
In fact, The Lego Movie is Toy Story in reverse. The Toy Story trilogy is a coming-of-age story for parents. The overall emotional arc is of characters accepting and embracing the realities of adulthood: caring for a child is far more satisfying than grandiose dreams of being a spaceman or celebrity, and even though the child will move on into his own life away from you, that's a part of life and beautiful too. The Lego Movie stands this on its head, with the adult learning to approach this children's toy with childish whimsy again. The really amazing thing about it is that the theme is only apparent after the third act revelation, but it retroactively snaps the whole movie into sharp focus. Wonderful idea, wonderful execution. And Will Ferrell is perfectly cast. He can do "man-child" in the most obnoxious way (Anchorman) and also in the most tender and endearing way (Elf).
And this is on top of all its pointed but ever-hilarious sendups of overserious Hollywood formula films and the media in general. It tells us, "Lighten up! Be imaginative!" in the only proper way: by being itself wildly lighthearted and imaginative.
Also, Elizabeth Banks has a really lovely singing voice.

Vive, vale. Siquid novisti rectius istis,
candidus inperti; si nil, his utere mecum.
I spent 80% of the movie thinking, "Wow, they are really tearing down everything I ever enjoyed in a movie in the most hilarious way possible" and the other 20% tearing up.
I don't know if this needs a spoiler, but IT GOT ONE.
This movie is brilliant in so many ways. I honestly do not think I've seen a movie quite this brilliant on so many different levels in a long, long time.
