Since Capt. America isn't overpowered/a single man army (at least in the movie universe; the guy is ****ing invincible in the comics), it is sensible to have him be a solid part of SHIELD and have the org. play a large role. That makes the film have a lot of players, and the trailer seems to show how that works out. I like it.
My bet is that the movie is going to be used to set up a lot of the plot-lines in Avengers 2 as well, seeing as how it the premise of security (and given what we know of Ultron's creation thus far) seems to be a big topic in the film.
(and given what we know of Ultron's creation thus far) seems to be a big topic in the film.
I've not watched the trailer yet, but I will, but I was curious as to this statement. Outside of anything in Cap. America 2 what do we know about Ultron's creation thus far? I've seen all the new Marvel movies multiple times and I have noticed zero on his creation. If I missed some Easter Eggs or some obscure dialogue please let me know!
I love the fact that they don't reveal the Winter Soldier identity in the trailer. I hope they play it smart and keep it that way. It makes it a little fun for all the comic geeks and it will be a surprise for those not familiar with the story.
Also, I love the parachute joke at the beginning. lol!
I'm excited for this one. I've really enjoyed all the Marvel movies so far. Captain is certainly not my most favorite character. He seems just a little too good to be real. Tony Stark (RD Jr.) is a phenomenal character, likable despite all his flaws.
So the movie was released this past thursday, i took my 10 year old to watch it with me.
Hmmm... i think i enjoyed it, i mean its a capt. movie so i pretty much enjoyed it the same or more than the first, but.... well how do i say it... just like the first one it feels more like a set up movie than a series all on its own. i mean the Iron Man movies where a Trilogy in and of themselves... the Capt movies... not so much.
Also the surprise scene at the end... for the first time it wasnt something that had me like 'Oh My Glob! this is awesome!' (i mean it was still cool but when the last secret scene was about the infinity stones and the collector... well this one felt underwhelming).
EDIT: Since i dont know what is the release status i am abstaining from posting spoilers or even doing much of a discussion, once others post more i may jump in

the final scene is a set up scene for Avengers 2?
or that:
here we can see not only von strut (im not writing his whole name...) but also see the staff from Avengers 1 AND the two main and only mutants to show in this universe so far, and that they aint called mutants but rather miracles?
Well ill post spoiler tags... people cant get mad at me for spoiler tags right?

Excellent spy thriller. Good suspense, nice twisty plot. Falcon is awesome; why couldn't he have been in The Avengers instead of Hawkeye? And we get to see the Black Widow kick some real ass, after being set decoration in Iron Man 2 and out of her league in The Avengers. Some of the action was a little rough - like the Nolan Batman movies, too chaotic to follow and enjoy. And it seemed like the eponymous Winter Soldier was a tertiary character in his own movie.
I am getting a little tired of the Old White Senator Badguy cliché. To the movie's credit, it didn't even bother pretending we hadn't spotted the villain the moment he appeared on screen. The real surprise was Sitwell. That guy? A freaking Nazi? Really?
Speaking of which, I have a hard time suspending my disbelief for secret diehard Nazi conspiracies. It's a shame, really, since Nazis are such perfect villains, but it's because they're such perfect villains that I just can't imagine them recruiting hundreds and hundreds of people. Do I really think a substantial fraction of SHIELD agents would think to themselves, "Yes, I would very much like to be a Nazi and kill everybody"? No. But am I willing to overlook that so that Captain America can keep on punching Nazis forever? I guess I am.
Zola seemed awfully helpful/suicidal. Not sure what was up with that, other than the need for an exposition dump.
Nick Fury's headstone got a laugh. He really is just Samuel L. Jackson now, isn't he?
The stinger surprised me. I was expecting Hugo Weaving. The Maximoff twins reveal isn't as cool. But it finally starts to answer the question of how the MCU is going to handle mutants - in short, they're just gonna give them new backstories. The Nazi involvement does raise the possibility that their father and his backstory will still be significant at least by implication (I doubt his name may legally be used). In general, though, I think the mutantless MCU is the right choice, regardless of its origin in a copyright tangle. The mutant phenomenon is a massive worldwide social change, and it, and the X-Men, work better by far in their own dedicated universe.
The movie was great fun. It's nice seeing Captain America be an actual bad-ass, and the movie really doesn't joke around with the fact that Capt. is a freaking super-soldier. He runs 11 (?) miles in 30 minutes. The guy throws his shield so hard that it literally rips through steel. Anyone punched or kicked or thrown by him is going to die, or at least be launched into the air like a rag-doll.
The thriller part of it, I found a bit iffy.
-How does Romanoff use a sample mac in a Mac store to access top-secret information?
-If army regulations clearly state that a munitions bunker shouldn't be 300 feet (or something) from housing, then wouldn't just about any military personnel figure that out? When'd they build that bunker? Did they never expect any military figures not involved with their top-secret plans to enter the base?
-No one in SHIELD is concerned the giant-ass gun fight that occurred in the middle of the street in an attempt to murder Fury? I know that SHIELD was a cover for HYDRA and all that, but we're also shown that a good number of SHIELD agents weren't HYDRA members. Wouldn't a couple of them thought "You know, Fury survived an assassination attempt. Shouldn't we try to figure out who these guys were instead of declaring Capt. a threat?"
-I get that you don't like the heli-carriers Capt. I don't like flying death-machines either. But is it really a good idea to bring them down over freaking Washington D.C.? Couldn't you have chosen a better spot? A place with less collateral damage, maybe?
Cap 2 was kind of like an episode of the Power Rangers. Fantastically choreographed fight scenes, cool gadgets, and nonchalant collateral damage! The latter bothered me until I remembered all the other movies where no ****s were given about lessening the carnage or damage to infrastructure. So yeah I loved it and will likely see it again some time soon. As said by others, there wasn't enough of The Winter Soldier in this movie and I wonder why he got billing as the main villain.
One thing that I loved was that watching Agents of SHIELD actually enhanced the experience. There are many small references to the show and even a semi-regular character from it(and a few one shots). Also, what has been happening in the background of what we see each week now makes a ton more sense. The MCU seems to have goodies for fans of all commitment levels and I'm pleased that AoS fans weren't left out.

-Gary Shandling's cameo made me so happy!! I bet Tony Stark is drinking a toast to his downfall right now.
-The Winter Soldier was a terrible bore. He was only brought out to let you know when an action sequence was about to begin. His fight with Black Widow was a blatant Worfing and the actual boss fight wasn't even as exciting.
MCU Stuff
-For Agents of SHIELD and comic fans, seeing The Triskelion for the first time was amazing. We've seen The Hub on AoS and so that means we've seen half of the named SHIELD locations in the MCU. We've yet to see The Fridge and The Sandbox.
-Speaking of AoS, given her high level I'm surprised Victoria Hand wasn't in this at all. At this point I can't tell if she's HYDRA or SHIELD and waiting until Tuesday to know for sure is killing me! Her association with Agent Sitwell doesn't really assure her guilt and yet her cagey attitude and questionable actions don't make her look innocent either.
Mid-Credits Preview
-Marvel just won't let the Nazi's die. Can't we move on to the Reds at least?!?
-I'd wondered what happened to Loki's disco stick after the Avengers(storage at The Fridge seemed logical)and now we know.
-I really hate the fact that Wanda and Pietro's past has been changed due to the property split with Fox. Fox continues to spit out inferior movies(as much as I want DoFP to be good X-3 and both Wolverine films make me doubt it) just so they can keep the property and we continue to give them our money.
A lot of people are mentioning Winter Soldier's lack of screentime, but we need to remember that he's the subtitle, it's still Captain America's movie. And given that he's integral to the plot, is a ghost haunting scenes he's not even in and represents a great deal of Steve's emotional arc in the film, I think the Winter Soldier had a suitable presence in the film. Even though he's in the title, the movie isn't really about him, more about how Steve responds to him. Sebastian Stan still has 7 more pictures to go (potentially), so we've got a lot of time to really explore the Winter Soldier.
And by the looks of the second stinger, that's exactly what Feige and the MCU has planned.
I'm incredibly impressed with Marvel Studios and their intricate plans for the MCU. Feige has plans all the way through to 2028 and it looks like he plans on combating overload and fatigue by varying things up. Just looking at the genres within Phase Two, it's clear that Marvel is using tone and genre to keep various films feeling different from one another. As predicted, the spy thriller feel of CA2WS was flawless, this was truly just a good movie that happened to have a superhero as the protagonist. Not one twist surprised me, but I truly did not care, the ride was fantastic regardless. The fight choreography was exceptional, there was a fluidity to the way Cap fought, and the shield was used as an extension of that, and to great effect. Things were brutal and physical, and not overdone CGI, which was a great departure from Thor and Iron Man.
The decision to pair Cap with Black Widow was perfect. The characters themselves are great foils to one another (his very black and white idealism and her morally grey disaffectedness combine in great ways), their camaraderie is evident both in dialogue and in action and they both bring out more depth in each other. BW prods Cap and challenges him to figure the world out and Cap pushes a notoriously slippery spy to put facade aside and learn to trust and let people in. And where Cap's partnership with Natasha is one of opposites uniting for common goals, his relationship with Sam is one of exploring two men who are very much the same learning how to be a part of the world again. And that relationship grew very organically despite not taking up a hell of a lot of screentime, it was very effectively done and that relationship really helped highlight Steve's own character motivation for the whole movie.
I will absolutely be seeing this again. If only to see what other Marvel Easter eggs are hiding. And I already spotted many.

I just hope that they'll find good actors when they have to do the inevitable recast.
I simply cannot imagine anyone else than RDJ doing Iron Man. Guy even freaking looks exactly like Tony Stark, and has also gone through the wave of fame, crash, and resurrection.

I'm not certain that they will, at least for the major players (Fandral and Rhodes being two examples of supporting recasts). Either Marvel Studios will re-up with the actors they want to continue with (and likely with significant raises if the MCU continues to be a financial juggernaut), use actors they likely can't re-up with sparingly, or replace characters in organic ways when actors' contracts expire. For instance, Chris Evans only has two pictures left and has long indicated that his interest in continuing on is waning meanwhile Sebastian Stan was signed to a potential nine pictures and we all know how the Captain America/Winter Soldier dynamic played out for a brief time in the comics. RDJ, on the other hand, is at the end of his contract as of next year's Age of Ultron and IM3 seemingly tied up his solo stories with a neat bow. Yet RDJ himself is a huge champion of the MCU and thoroughly enjoys playing Iron Man. He even personally escorted dozens of kids to the CA2WS opening show as Tony Stark literally just because. If any of the expiring actors is going to lobby for resigning, it's him. And he has the charisma, clout and star power to get his way.
But even if they don't, I think Feige is planning for it. That's the reason we're seeing so many Marvel characters filtering into existing franchises. They don't have the name recognition of the MCU's current crop of major players but remember that Iron Man, Captain America and Thor weren't huge names outside of comic nerds prior to Phase One, either. Now all three are able to carry franchises, and I'm betting Feige is counting on characters like Dr Strange, Black Widow, Ms Marvel, Ant-Man and others we're looking at being introduced to in the next couple of years. We still have a couple of years before Thor and Captain America reach their third (and potentially - last) installments, and leading up to that we have another Avengers, Guardians of the Galaxy and Ant-Man with Cap 3, Thor 3 and likely Doctor Strange all safe/sure bets before Avengers 3. We've got a long way to go and a lot of new faces to meet. I know it seems impossible now to think of a new crop replacing the familiar faces, but six years ago it seemed impossible for the MCU to be what it is right now.
And Marvel has recently proven that is has no problem shaking up its universe.
Great points. It is good that the MCU seems to like to actually tell stories and create an overarching theme that are either concluded or brought up in a major way in each The Avengers arc. And you're most certainly right that just when Iron Man came out, no one even imagined the incredible success of The Avengers.
It cannot be denied that the MCU is brilliantly conceived and the story of all the different heroes are united well. If they just keep it up, then clearly they'll be able to make the other characters take up the role in an organic manner. It's not necessary to have a film always be about Iron Man and Capt. America. And I do think that is the brilliance behind the MCU. If each character is played out meaningfully and their actions reverberate well into the following films, then there's probably no obvious reason why you can continue to have films without Iron Man as a central figure.
Plus, it appears Capt. America 2 has utterly crushed the box office, and just makes it even more likely that the MCU juggernaut will continue on its merry way.
I really liked it. I also want to respond to some of the things I've seen here (specifically Blinking Spirit's good points):
First of all, people, the villain at the end was Von Strucker.
BS, I get your annoyance with the evil old white guy thing, but there are reasons why it worked out that way (and also why Red Skull wasn't in the teaser). Aleksander Lukin filled Alexander Pierce's role in the comic's version of the story, and was brainwashed into being the Red Skull. This requires a lot of Russian backstory that would have been confusing for a two hour movie, so it made more sense to keep it internal to SHIELD. I really like the idea of operation paperclip bringing former Hydra scientists into the new SHIELD, starting the infiltration.
And I should note that Hydra aren't Nazis. The first movie is pretty clear they're an entirely different fascist regime that was using the Nazis for their own ends. Given 60 years, I can see them having a small number inside SHIELD. I think the actual Hydra in SHIELD was relatively small (the Strike Team, Insight Crew, Pierce and a few agents like Sitwell), with the majority of Hydra being cells like we saw in the stinger with Strucker or Gary Shandling's Senator earlier in the film.
Loved the Dr. Strange shout-out, and excited to see how this plays out in the films over the years. Since Chris Evans has explicitly stated he is done after his six picture contract is up, I expect Sebastian Stan will step in as Captain America (as per the comics).
I also think Zola is about as good as you can get without being silly. His Krang-like body definitely wouldn't have worked, and I definitely fanboy squee'd when I saw the camera and screen set up.
I also have to say I did NOT expect Sitwell to be Hydra. I thought they were grooming him to be a more major character, maybe Fury's mole in Hydra, and then... truck. Goodbye Agent Sitwell, we hardly knew ye (Outside of Thor, The Consultant, Item 47 and Agents of SHIELD). I'm interested to see how this plays on tomorrow's Agents of SHIELD (which has finally become good television).
So, what do you guys think, with Crossbones alive at the end of the film, that Cap 3 will be Strucker and Crossbones. Possibly the death of Captain America storyline? Or possibly a MODOK/Baron Zemo Storyline?
I totally expected Sitwell to by HYDRA. He and Hand were my two picks for Most Likely to Be Actually Evil Moles of the Coulson-level agents we've met on AoS. Something about his demeanor has been tripping my Evil Senses for about half of the season of AoS. I think Melinda's been reporting to Fury the whole time, because they weren't sure what side Coulson was going to come down on once he figured out what happened in the Guest House.
As far as Cap2, the first Cap movie is probably my favorite of the MCU movies, so I was pleased at how his character developed between Avengers and Cap2. I love the pairing of Cap with Black Widow; they really play off each other well, and there's good chemistry between the actors. I was thrilled to see Falcon, and hope he stays as a recurring presence in the MCU. I do think they're setting up for Bucky taking over as Captain America, especially given Chris Evan's recents statements.
I was not digging Bucky's Winter Emo-ldier Hair. Seriously, I get that he's supposed to be all "tortured cybernetic assassin drone" but you're telling me they were able to keep him clean-shaven while running through all those cryosleep/assassinate cycles but never bothered to give him a decent haircut?
I loved the scene with Maria applying for a job at Stark Industries. One of the theories I've seen floating around the 'net that I particularly like is Tony Stark taking on a role similar to his father in founding a new SHIELD using his Stark Industries money/tech, Fury's connections to whatever SHIELD infrastructure survives, with Maria as the go-between, and Coulson's team taking on a role as cleaning up HYDRA-related messes around the world as the main ground-level agents of NuSHIELD.
I must say, the film looks quite awesome.

No, I agree. But there are a few great moments with Ultimate Cap, but yeah, ultimately he's a blowhard.
I really like movie cap - they managed to make him introspective and seem genuine without making him broody.
