At first I thought I was just watching a preview for some random cheeseball samurai fantasy flick. But then that guy said that line, "We are forty-seven". And I was like *recordscratch* "Wait, what?"

Nicholas Cage doesn't star in this film, it's actually Keanu Reeves.

"Alright, 300 was a hit. What other famous groups of legendary warriors throughout history are there?"
"Well, this one time there were 47 Ronin in Japan."
"Ok, I like the fact that there's it's a famous group that has a cool number. What's a Ronin?"
"It's like a samurai, except leaderless."
"So it's like seven samurai, except there's 40 more of them?"
"... Yeah I guess."
"Amazing!"
That's pretty much my impression of what went down.
That being said, this looks pretty darn awesome. I would love it if this movie turned out to be a really fun watch.

Seven Samurai bears no resemblance in characters, plot, or themes to the legend of the 47 Ronin. And it's still closer than this movie will be.

Thank you for that Highroller. It is reassuring to know I'm not the only one who wonders about movie/script proposals. (for example = You Don't Mess with the Zohan. Really? Really? Seriously... really???)
From the posted trailer, it looks exciting and action-packed enough to get our blood flowing this winter... so yeah... it has that going for it. Of course I was one of the few who didn't go all starry eyed at the 300 trailers and found it to be.... alright, I guess. I'm kinda indifferent about it, and I have the same feeling about 47 Ronin. It does look intriguing enough to keep on my radar...

Which, honestly, is the only thing I expect from a major Hollywood release anymore. I thought last year was a dismal year for movies. This one is outright terrible thusfar.
It looks like it will be to the Legend of the 47 Ronin what 300 was to the Battle of Thermopylae, i.e. it will be quite historically inaccurate but ultimately fun to watch (assuming you have the ability to turn your brain off and lose all expectations). I'm sure I'll watch it and be entertained. My only gripe is Keanu. Why is he still put in movies?! He's one of the worst actors working today. He's not as bad as Collin Farrell but he's still pretty terrible.
300 was actually very accurate in terms of the narrative (and the comic even more so). It's just that nothing looked remotely like it should have.
Keanu Reeves is still put in movies because he is friendly, hard-working, and doesn't have an ego. He is the anti-Lohan: she loses roles in spite of her natural talent because she's impossible to work with, he gets roles in spite of his lack of talent because he's easy to work with.
So, now that this movie's out, has anyone seen it? I almost went, but my mother wanted to see Grudge Match instead. I heard 47 Ronin got terrible reviews; but what was you guys's experience with it?

2015: Worst Mafia Performance (Group) - Best Read
2016: Best Town Performance (Group) - Best Town Player - Best Overall Player
Haven't seen it, there was a review in i09 that basically said the following:
1) Executives meddled.
2) Exec gave Keanu more stuff than he had in the first cut
3) Director got sacced
4) Its a giant mess of a movie at odds with itself
5) If Nic Cage had been the star this would have been a "so bad its good" case, Keanue just makes it "so bad its sad"
No i havent seen it, im just relaying what i've read on articles so far.

That is not dead which can eternal lie. And with strange eons even death may die.
Not wholly due to Reeve's performance or skill, but this film is crap and will go down in history as a flop or even a bomb (as if you couldn't have reasonably speculated such an outcome, again not [only or at all] because of Keanu). One thing to note is dramas don't fare so well compared to films such as Fast & Furious 6.
The writing is bloody crap (what the hell's a narrative?), and the insane production simply highlights the film's issues and exaggerates its crappiness.
This film doesn't really do justice to the legacy of 47 ronin and is a far cry from any other films about the 47 ronin.
The premise involving a British–Japanese ronin still sounds silly (even if the offered back story is within the realm of possibility and potentially believable), but I am happy to see Keanu, especially alongside renown and up-and-coming Japanese actors/actresses in supporting roles.
I actually liked it. The visuals were great, the action was solid, the costumes were impressive (especially the samurai's armors), the plot was easy to follow. There is all you can expect from these kind of movies: a love story, revenge, death, some humor, epic "boss fights" with the main villains etc.
It's nothing special, but it's not terrible either. But maybe it's just because I like these whole samurai/Japanese mythology movies. The whole time watching it, I kept thinking - geez, how I wish for a return to Kamigawa.
The things I didn't like:
- villains die too easily
- none of the 47 ronin die in the attack of the castle, although they are greatly outnumbered (at least I didn't see any casualties)
- some actors act a little... weird, especially the witch
- i expected more from that tattooed guy, especially as he seems to be on every poster
- the ending is terrible: they go through all that carnage and heroism, just so that the Shogun can show up in the end and say: good job, now kill yourself. And they all cry in gratitude.

Watch your thoughts, for they become words.
Watch your words, for they become actions.
Watch your actions, for they become habits.
Watch your habits, for they become character.
Watch your character, for it becomes your destiny.
The reports I've heard conflict with the messaging in this thread. I've heard elsewhere though I've yet to see it for myself that:
1) Keanu isn't the main character, and that no one on the posters is actually the most important character.
The film is conflicted. Reeves, at least to an international audience, is better known and the director, without a doubt, intentionally added scenes for him to do his thousand-yard stare. As a result of this increase in Reeves' role (and concomitant decrease in screen time for characters such as Oishi), the cohesion of the film is compromised and it seems directionless and disjointed.
But of course, whatever he does, we all love Keanu, right?
2) It is somewhat faithful to the original mythos
...I don't know whether you are being facetious or not and whether you mean this as a good thing or a bad thing or it's simply an observation.
I found it a disinteresting fiction inspired by history.

That's a valid evaluation. I guess you can't exactly get that, particularly the love story and the humour, from the history books.

Glad I wasn't the only one to notice the Stormtrooper effect. I thought it totally weird.
Not only do some actors seem like extras, but there's essential no character development for everyone except for Oishi and Kai.
I honestly have no flaming idea what Rick Genest ('Savage') (also featured in, uh, Lady Gaga's "Born This Way" MV) was doing in those posters or in that film. If you left for a short snack or toilet break, you'd have missed him, yet he appears on almost all promotional things as you duly noted. I suspect that he was placed to pique interest and that's about it, and not because he's a well-known Western actor. (In fact, this, sadly for him, was his first role in a big film. Doing essentially nothing, who knows whether he has acting chops or will have acting chops.)

You're right.
I'm kinda happy about this. Keanu is, apparently, like the best person ever to work with in a big special effects production
