I can understand the confusion, as they are the two big X-Men time travel stories.
Honestly, I hope they use this opportunity to establish the original X-men movies as an 'Alternate Timeline' to avoid all the continuity gaps or mistakes they've made in just 5 movies (http://io9.com/5966264/8-ways-x+men-movie-continuity-is-irretrievably-****ed). Or, to just ignore the first 3 movies all together and make the new movie independent, just with actors playing the same roles (Like M in Casino Royale).
Ultimately, what I'd like to see is the 'future' timeline creating a framing device for the main movie. To avoid time travel shenanigans, keep the time travel to a minimum, and just have someone head back once.
Apocalypse was not part of the 'Days of the Future Past' storyline. In fact that story was written 5 years before the first appearance of Apocalypse. Perhaps you're thinking of 'The Age of Apocalypse'?
Anywho, I'm excited about this movie. I wonder if they'll have the balls to vaporize Wolverine like in the comics as that was probably the most iconic image to come out of that whole storyline.
I read somewhere that Bryan Singer is going to be directing it which worries me. His movies were good, a hell of a lot better than part 3 or the Wolverine movie, but 'First Class' was the best. I'd like to see the same director do the sequel. We shall see.
Odd why do I think he's in it? Oh no mah X-Men canon is breaking down. I feel horrible. Maybe I can get Marvel to retcon him into it. They like retconning.
After X3 I washed my hands of X-Men, as they were already my least favorite comic series ever. So I never got to see First Class. Was it any good? Is this movie going to be worth it>

First Class was WAY better than the previous 3 movies. On a compare to comics level, they still cannot really do it right.

It was technically better: better constructed plot and some really great acting, especially from Fassbender. Problem was, no characters I could sympathize with. The eponymous "first class" were poorly developed supporting characters, and with the supposed protagonist, Xavier, they went all-out on the "smug unlikeable know-it-all" portrayal (which, to be fair, is pretty faithful to the comics - there's a reason I don't really like the X-Men). So the best part was without a doubt Wolverine's cameo: he said exactly what I was thinking to the Prof.
From this preview, though, it sounds like they may be recognizing and playing on the differences between McAvoy's jerkass Xavier and Stewart's avuncular Xavier. Which could be promising.

So, what exactly is the premise here? Because I found the trailer a bit confusing-
Something horrible happened that resulted in all the mutants getting killed, and so the old Xavier and Magneto find Wolverine to send him back in time; as his special regenerative abilities make him the only one who can handle it.
So he gets sent back in time to his younger body (which amounts to the same thing for Logan), and he has to convince the younger Xavier about the events of the future, and find a way to stop it all from happening?

Considering First Class started life as X-Men Origins: Magneto (seriously), I was more than happy with Magneto's character arc, although his face-heel turn at the end was a little sudden (I was expecting it in some kind of sequel).
I pretty much agree with you about the rest, but it was an enjoyable film to watch, even if Magneto is the only character I cared about.

It wasn't any good.
Well, check that, Michael Fassbender as Magneto was badass. But the movie was pretty bad as a whole, mostly from atrocious writing.
Also, while I don't particularly care what liberties they take with this, wasn't the whole point of X-Men First Class that it didn't sync up with the original trilogy continuity?
Anyway, I think this will merit a watch. I'm seeing a trailer whose selling point is dialogue between two characters about hope as opposed to large amounts of explosions, which is a rarity I want to encourage with my dollars, not to mention it seems to have kept the main cast of First Class while trimming the excess characters. We'll see how this plays out.
I liked this storyline on the 90's cartoon. I'm going to watch that again and read the actual comic before seeing the movie to see which I like the best. I know Forge was added in for some reason in the cartoon but am not clear as to whether was Bishop in the original storyline. Ah Bishop...always coming from the future to kill someone.
I want an Age of Apocalypse movie so badly, but this is an acceptable alternative. As long as they don't screw it up.
Agreed. But that's a tall order (them not screwing it up). *crosses fingers*

I respectfully disagree. I thought that First Class was incredible. Easily the best X-Men movie thus far, and better than most other comic book movies. There was no major fault in the movie.

I have no clue how someone could enjoy the X-Men movie franchise at all and not find First Class to be the best or at least just under another movie like X2 or something. Really go watch X-Men 1-2 again and notice some of the glaring flaws in those movies. X-Men 1 has some ridiculously cheesy elements and 2 while better then 1 has problems of its own.
First Class is definitely the strongest in the series from my experience. I personally enjoyed X-Men 1-2 and still find them to be pretty good, but they are not the same level at all.
I know Forge was added in for some reason in the cartoon but am not clear as to whether was Bishop in the original storyline.
Negative. The original "Days of Future Past" X-Men storyline took place in 1981 and mostly centered around an older Kitty Pryde whose consciousness is sent back in time to inhabit her younger self. Shortly after that, Rachel Summers (daughter of Cyclops and Jean Grey) is sent back in time from that future as well - body and all - and joins the 1980's X-Men.
Other "X-Men from the future" like Cable and Bishop were not invented until the 1990's and neither of them comes from the same future timeline as Rachel Summers (at least this was true the last time I checked). But as you would expect whenever they adapt the story for a new generation or a new medium (ie cartoon or movie), they tinker with the story and change the characters around to something they think will connect better with the current audience.
Forge often gets a mention in these alternate future or alternate timeline stories because when you're looking for names to drop in a story involving time travel, it kind of makes sense to include the guy whose mutant power is "super good at inventing things".

Cable seems incompatible with any Rachel Summers futures because he's the son of Madelyn Pryor and Cyclops. Jean Grey and Scott died in the movies(at least it looked like they did) and so perhaps neither Rachel or Nate will be in Days of Future Past.

Yes, they basically "killed off" Rachel Summers' future timeline when they introduced Cable. But then they introduced Bishop, and then Age of Apocalypse happened, and the Ultimate Universe, and then I didn't really pay attention for about a decade so I have no idea what is considered canon anymore when it comes to the X-Men and alternate/future timelines.
I would be very surprised if either Cable or Phoenix (Rachel) show up in the film, but you never know. I was quite surprised to see Azazel of all people show up in First Class. They might just decide to show one or both in a quick cameo as a wink to the audience or something.

Pretty much all the future timelines are still out there. Marvel uses the branching timeline method, so every alternate future or universe that has existed pretty much still does exist in one form or another. Cable's future and Rachel Grey's future are basically along the same timeline, anyway, as Apocalypse takes over in the distant future, long after Days of Future Past, which is the near future.
I'm still cautious. X3 had amazing trailers but the actual movie was lacklustre to say the least. There's a lot of brief snippets that look interesting (Ice slide, Storm dying, Erik/Charles and the years of regret, etc) but just as much looks to be a mess (Kitty losing her protagonist role to the overused Wolverine, Quicksilver's everything, Beast being a blue Hulk now, Charles walking for some reason, the fact that most of the characters from past movies are likely in only one scene, Rogue being cut but still in the credits, the bloated cast that will be there for name drops and one cool moment, etc).
There are kernels of good stuff here and I'm still more excited for this than Amazing Spiderman 2, but between this mess and Winter Soldier, I know which I'm more excited to see. There's just too much of a chance of DoFP will collapse under its own weight. The X franchise has always had issues with overcrowding and underdeveloping their characters and this looks no different. And the story arc itself is epic, I fear they won't do it justice in a single film with so many cameos clogging up time. When they first announced their plans, I wished they'd broken it up into two parts, which is a tactic that's overused in franchises today but I think would have been a benefit here where additional time would afford greater development.
I'll still see this in theaters, but I'm tempering my excitement.

Yeah. The movie would have been 10000% more interesting if Kitty was the main character. Unfortunately, the 90's cartoon(which I loved and still do) seems to have a strong influence on the leads for each film. I honestly wish Fox would be more open to having its own cinematic universe rather than banking on derivatives from the comics and cartoon.

I didn't think of that but I definitely agree. They want to do Age of Apocalypse next and probably want it out before 2020. Given that pretty much no one likes X-3 I think any move to completely negate its influence on the movie storyline would be positively received.
Hey, for once, Highroller and I agree on something. First Class was garbage. First, if it was supposed to be a part of the X-Men franchise (and they seemed to sell it that way), then it failed incredibly in the continuity arena. If they weren't trying to tie it to the original series, then why didn't they just run the original line up of characters? Or at least bring back Cyclops?
On top of that, it was terribly paced and the characters and mythology were destroyed. At no point in the film were Xavier and Eric ever really friends. If they were, their friendship lasted all of 2-3 days which takes all of the emotional resonance out of Eric's turn to the dark side. These characters were supposed to have years together and Eric's turn to evil was supposed to be trying for him. First Class reduced everything to about a two week period and made it bland and uneventful.
Crappy film.
I'm assuming the purpose of this film is to finally correct the long list of wrongs committed by the franchise so far since we can see young Xavier walking in this latest preview. I know this leads in to Age of Apocalypse (which I know nothing about), but I don't know how it will effect overall continuity, or lack thereof.
McAvoy and Fassbender are return and so are Stewart and McKellen.
Time Travel plots always make me nervous. So many news way for narrative laziness to ruin a movie.
I wonder who's gonna play Apocalypse...
