Then could you give me a single film that stands up to Akira or Ghost in the Shell or the brilliant work of Hayao Miyazaki or Makoto Shinkai?
Paprika. Although if you aren't able to suspend a large amount of disbelief it won't work too well for you.
Also, although its technically a series of 3 OVAs, Samurai X: Trust and Betrayal (omg swords) basically watches like a movie - and an extremely good one at that.
I'm not saying anime is bad, or that it isn't an artform. but there is a huge disparity between anime that has even a remotely interesting narrative versus complete cliche ridden schlock.
You're saying it's a bloated genre?
I don't know, I guess it is, but I think a lot of of genres are much more bloated.
"The same could be said about most live action films in the US", are you ☺☺☺☺ing serious?! Um, wtf films are you watching? Scary movie 3? Transformers? Did you REALLY just say that anime is basically more philosophical than American cinema? Don't even attempt to make that comparison sir because it will end very badly for you. How many classes in a film program at a college will include anime? Are you going to really sit here and tell me MORE than one?
Modern western cinema, yes. The large volume of stuff like transformers, as you mentioned. To be honest I was speaking more about TV there, don't know quite enough anime films to be comfortable saying that just about movies.
Fantasy based stories are absolutely the norm in anime. Sometimes they use magic, or machines, or spirits to get a moral or subtextual message across. Believe me, I get that. You think I'm just cherry picking bad examples, or that it is marketed wrong, but what do you expect?
I think that the western world cherry picks the bad ones and those are all you see, with the exception being studio Ghibli stuff.
Am I supposed to dig for the "deep cuts" of anime that aren't available in the US?
Well, tbh, I do stuff like this for all kinds of media, simply because I know I can find quality stuff and its worth my time. I suppose it's unfair to ask everyone to do that, but it sounded to me like you were making a broad statement about anime - not the highly marketed anime easily accessible to the west.
And yeah there are "manly" male characters. But 9 times out of 10 it's the same cliche badass ex-soldier or whatever who either has an eyepatch or smokes big cigars. Tell me I am lying.
Ehh, I don't know. The first ones that come to mine for me are (again I watch more anime shows than movies) Spike from cowboy bebop and Simon from Gurren Lagann (after his character has evolved quite a bit) - both of which don't fit that very well. I disagree with this.
I can never really get into animes. At least the ones with long runs. The only one I actually watched was Azumanga Daioh, and that was only 26 episodes long. I tried to watch Bleach, but, like I said, couldn't get into it.

I'm surprised noone has thrown NGE into the discussion on the side of quality animes that everyone should see at least twice before they die.
Because I've been attempting to offer ones that go against the stereotypical trends that the guy who took issue with them cited, one of which was mechs.
It's also a bit overrated too imo, it's good and it was certainly influential, but not as much as a lot of people give it credit, I think.

I tend not to like comedy much. I smile once or twice during the movie but theres just this feeling of dying inside. You know, like when you get with a group of friends and they decide to do something together that you hate or can't do, like going to the pool when you have a leg in a cast. You just feel bad and guilty a bit.
Will Ferell, Jack Black, the others like him (one looked like Will Ferell I found.) I cannot stand. Like Suicide Material.
I also don't like horror movies as I don't want people to know I still get scared of them.
I'd say that I hate most Hollywood movies. It's not really a genre restricted thing; most movies just seem to be made for profit rather than for any artistic merit. I'm fine with the occasional mindless thriller, but I'm lucky if I can find five films that I really liked at the end of any given year.
Anime is hit and miss, mostly miss. A lot of it has low production value and is poorly dubbed. The manga's typically better, from what I've read.
Please explain how and why you don't enjoy comedic film. Do you laugh at any artwork or entertainment in general? Not trying to troll I am sincerely asking.
And the criticism most films are made for $. ... Well. ALL films are, in the end, signed off on and made and produced and released for $. This is a somewhat unfortunate symptom of classical hollywood cinema. But on the bright side it is much better than decades ago when a film studio owned the rights to an actor's appearing in ANY film.... wtf.

Does anyone else like 'Western' anime? Not really a lot of it but cartoons not from Japan can be good. Cases in point being 'The Last Airbender' (American) and 'Huntik' (Italian)...
I miss the old 80s cartoons too, THAT was when people cared about what their shows looked like (Voltron, Transformers, He-Man, hell Jem & the Holograms looked better then some of the stuff produced today!)

Akira is a masterpiece? Really? If I never see it again it'll be too soon.
I don't like Horror movies. From slasher films to whatever kind of horror Saw and its 10000000 sequels are. I just find them boring, having something jump out at me some guy losing enough blood to exsanguinate an elephant is surprising but its not scary.
I am not going to think about it later, it will be utterly forgettable and so not scary. Halfway through the movie I am hoping that Jason or Michael or whoever would just up and die already so I can move on.
Fantasy movies! Its not that I don't like them, its that people tend to treat Fantasy and Sci-Fi and if they are the same thing. So when I get ready to watch a good Sci-Fi movie/show and it ends up being a fantasy movie, I feel disappointed.
"AKIRA is regarded by many critics as a landmark anime film, one that influenced much of the art in the anime world that followed its release with many illustrators in the manga industry citing the film as an important influence. The film led the way for the growth of popularity of anime outside of Japan. AKIRA is considered a forerunner of the second wave of anime fandom that began in the early 1990s and has gained a massive cult following since then.
The Akira anime also made TIME magazine's list of top 5 anime DVDs.
The film made Terry Gilliam's top 50 animated movie list."

Individualities may form communities, but it is institutions alone that can create a nation.
Nothing succeeds like the appearance of success.
Here is my principle: Taxes shall be levied according to ability to pay. That is the only American principle.
My wife loves the timepiece movies. Pride and Prejudice, Other Boleyn Girl, etc. I can't stand them, but I sit there and "watch" it with her, if I ever want peace in the house. They bore me to tears but I have to fain liking it and how interested I am in it for her.
I second M. Night Shamalamadingdong films. He should have stopped after Sixth Sense. Though I did like Last Airbender, though it may be because I am a fan of the cartoon.
For me, I'm not really hard against any particular genre. I mean if you ask me to watch something with you on your home theatre, I wouldn't mind and perhaps be as curious as you about it.
That being said, I rarely watch these genres by myself nowadays:
-Musicals. I think these should stay on stage. Period.
-Kid movies. Not animation, but kid movies.
-Horror movies. Because I really think horror movies must be watched together, so we can be terrorized together and hold hands.
-Poor adaptations. Is this even a genre?
-Bad rated movies. What? No, I mean shallow movies. Still not a genre?
Yes, I do watch romantic comedies, dramas, graphical violence, gore, etc. by myself. Sometimes. If they're good and not shallow.

(about the English language) It's kinda like a raft that was cobbled together from parts of three different boats and since then has been kept barely afloat with crude repairs every time a leak appeared.
Guys you are not getting the idea behind RomComs. They set the mood for a night of passion. Who cares how good the romcom is. If it inspires a night of passion who cares about the movie. It engages the human mating ritual. The male peacock has its brilliant plumage. Humans males have Owen Wilson and Sandy B.
Movies that really bother me is those rare ones who think that depicting unusual terrible acts of violence or sexual depravity is somehow OK if you do it in the name of ART?/?. Movies like Ichi the killer, The secretary and Salo (120 days of Sodom).
The biggest one for me is anime. There's like 3 character personalities and they're all actively annoying. Tsundere seems like the only type of character "development" that the genre is capable of. On top of that there's so much inane dialogue and needless exposition. Most of the plots that I've seen are about FF7 level as well.
The other big one is straight slasher and made-you-jump horror. Also, anything with a shaky hand-held camera style. I love horror-comedies and thrillers but I just can't get into most straight horror. Gore does nothing to me at all and the art of building atmosphere seems to have been lost entirely. I'll take Rosemary's Baby or Silence of the Lambs over any of the new breed of horror schlock.

Anime is a style, not really a genre, and frankly... You haven't seen much good anime. I can definitely recommend you some stuff that is not at all like any of that if you want to try to get into it. Things specifically comfortable for western audiences, things with great characters or plot - hell there's even a (semi-faithful) adaptation of The Count of Monte Cristo with beautiful art.
I'll agree with you about new horror, I haven't really seen anything I like and The Thing is my favorite movie. I tend to try to stay away from it though.
