OMG. I just had the most amazing baron steal. I was Brand. I had the full flat 50 magic penetration. Sorcerer Shoes, Rylais, Liandries, Deathcap and double Dorans Ring. I was 2 levels above everyone. Enemy team was doing Baron so I used Pillar of Flame hitting Jarvan, Lucian and Lee. Then I press R and got a quadra kill in the baron pit barely missing Lucian who somehow escaped with 150 health but I got baron. I did all by myself.
Forgive me for asking a noob question, but why do competitive/pro LoL team comps different from those in random 5s or low ranked? Specifically, the absence of a pure-ADC or Support. I am aware Jinx (ADC) is sometimes used right now + Nami/Thresh/Janna (Supp). I've always wondered why professional teams gyrate towards more top or mid-lane style champs. I'm assuming this is due to the raw power level -- how some characters are "strictly better" than others?
I've asked questions before about which champions to play, and I appreciate earlier feedback. Just wondering about this above question. Hope I don't get flamed or start a flame-war lol.
The meta game is just a meta. It doesn't mean you have to follow the meta to win especially given how diverse a game like League of Legends can be.

I'm guessing Jarvan and Lee Sin didn't build any defensive items and the enemy team probably fed so hard. Still, good job!

They had armor and health but their magic resist was only 83 and building health against Brand isn't the greatest thing to do.. I pierced 50 magic resist with the full 20 from runes, 15 from sorcerer shoes and 15 from liandries.
At the time their Annie was 7/2/3
Syndra was 0/12/8
Jarvan was 3/6/13
Lucian was 6/5/6
Lee was 7/5/6
I was 18/3/8 at the time and the only one really fed on both teams.
I felt bad for their Syndra because their team was raging at her for feeding me but Lee and Jarvan were the ones who caused me to get fed in the first place. In the early game Jarvan ultimates me. Syndra is trapped inside so I kill both of them inside his ultimate with mine. Couple of minutes later Syndra was on low health and was running from me. Lee was also on low health but runs in the same direction as Syndra. I flash ultmate Lee killing Syndra and Lee in the process. They were always grouping up after the lane phase. What do you think will happen when you decide to group up against an aoe mage who has the highest theoretical damage ultimate in the game.

I would put it this way: pros need to follow the meta. Examples abound where a team with better understanding of the meta is unbeatable - samsung blue with the short-lived mid soraka/mundo/kog summoner heal stack comp comes to mind. Random pubs, within reason (don't go low CS duo lane kog'maw or some ***** please) do not have to because being comfortable individually in your lane/playstyle/champion/build etc is by FAR more important.

Until you get at the upper level of the game is not about playing against the enemy champions, but playing with your own.
When I play with GLJ I can blitzcrank into pretty much any team comp because I'm familiar with the champion and I trust him to play someone that explodes whomever I grab (which is everyone because my pulls are amazing) and I really want to play a game with him where he plays Cass bot with our ADC mid because that would be ******* hilarious
I don't think the meta is unimportant at low skill play - I think the meta is different at low skill play and the differences are poorly understood. Agree that understanding your own champion is more important than the meta - at pretty much all levels of play except literally pro teams, actually.
Example: Having a real support is not a good idea until something like ~Silver 3, because below that odds are even if you do well and get your ADC fed, they won't know how to use that advantage effectively (not that Silver 3 ADCs are paragons of good positioning in teamfights, but at least you can rely on them to shoot someone), essentially zeroing out your effect on the game. Below that, if you're getting put in the low CS role bot lane, you want to pick something where you personally can acquire as much power as possible over the lane phase and you personally can take over the game if you succeed. But nobody really does that.
There's something of a catch-22 here, of course: understanding the low skill metagame is itself a skill that will cause you to climb.
As I said, meta matters mostly for pros not pubs. I didn't say high skill or low skill. But yea it still matters to some extent, just not remotely as much as a lot of solo queue players think.
A good deal of pros play meta-questionable picks in solo queue all the time, even in the regions where solo-q is serious.

I could game tomorrow. Shoot me a text. I have a job interview at 1030am my time, but I could game after that.
And yeah, my blitzcrank is kind of trolly, and probably kind of bad, in that my ultimate super lategame build include both Muramana and Archangels staff
Boots of Swiftness
Shurelyias
Frozen Heart
Sightstone
Muramana
Archangels Staff
Which is, 0 + 0 + 400 + 0 + 1000 + 1000 mana + blitzcranks level 18 base of 200 + 40(18) for 3320 mana giving a total possible combined shield of around 1660 + an archangels of 472
I mean, its not exactly good, but god, people are kind of surprised when a blitzcrank is chipping away with auto attacks doing silly bits of damage and then popping over 1k in shield, I love it.
I just read something absolutely bonkers on the lolwiki blitz page where a dude is suggest taking smite on blitz so you can build the slow activation thing to use on enemy champions and, early game, for making insane hooks by launch a hook, smiting the minion you would have hit, and then murdering the dude. Late game you get double smite so you basically will never lose a baron or dragon buff if you are organized (incidentally, does everyone on your team get the dragon stacks when it dies or what? Hows that work?)
Not to mention that the item looks rather inexpensive, 750 gold, so thats not hard to get and you'll have slightly more cash stealing 1 CS from your ADC every time you try and land a sick pull, bro.
Drawmeomg,
I think plenty of mage supports probably count as that. where they can take over.

Didn't one of the supports in the all-star URF match do this build?

No idea, I didn't watch it. I've been doing double tear for ages.
Season 4 rewards lock in tonight! How did everyone place? I managed to get plat 4 fairly early and was able to pretty much rest on my laurels, playing enough to stay out of the inactive queue. I've been having some fun in the team builder as of late, though.

I just sat in plat 4 without trying, only playing the occasional inhouses with friends recently. I would've had to improve to get to diamond and didn't really feel like doing it, though I think I could've.

Made it to diamond 5, never could get higher, stopped playing ranked and decayed down to plat 2 >.<
Eh well, I'm okay with that. I didn't really deserve my spot in diamond by the end of the season anyway. I was playing so badly

Well, he did something to abuse the URF-lowered cooldown of Blitz's passive and just be unkillable.
Blitz passive cooldown wasn't reduced on URF, actually. I was sad, but its not reduced by CDR normally, so it was ok.
The big thing with Blitz on URF was just being able to make it so people could never get away and if you did it right you could keep someone pretty much CC'd forever as long as you kept landing grabs.
When I was in that tryhard mode, I made it to diamond 3, but then just lost the will to keep climbing and say around with the rank. The masters border looks cool, but the effort required to climb higher isn't worth it, in my opinion.
I was in Plat 5, didn't play, and decayed. My last push back was going really well too, and then I had a DC twice in a row that started a streak of bad games. I got back up to G1 94 LP over like 6 games of straight wins, then got unlucky. D: Oh well.
