Old news I know but it's pretty big, Panini America and FUNimation recently announced at this year's San Diego Comic Con that they'll be relaunching the Original Dragon Ball Z CCG by Score Entertainment that was designed by Jim Ward. Here's the latest info regarding the new relaunch:
Booster boxes will cost $96 with 12 cards per a pack at a $3.99 price point.
The Booster Base set will be 160ish cards and be exclusive to the booster boxes.
Ultra Rares will drop 1:72 packs
Starter Cases will feature 6 different characters and have 8 starters per a box at a $14.99 price point with most cards being exclusive to starters.
Foil cards will drop 1:3 packs. With a full foil set.
Rule Variations -
All cards work with original cards
The deck size under the new rules is 60 cards
The first set is a mix of reprints and new cards
Reprint cards have been updated with new “Hit” keyword text to make if successful effects easier to understand. Ex Hit – Your opponent cannot preform energy attacks.
New Banish keyword text replace “remove from the game”
New Critical effects have been added to the game. Whenever your opponent discards five cards of damage from an unstopped attack you may to choose to do one of the following effects: 1. Capture a dragon ball, 2. discard one of your oppents alleys in play from the game, 3. Lower your opponents anger by one.
Main Personality and Allies are not two separate card types.

I hope they handle it a bit better than the original. The original was a decent game, but it was massively plagued by just rampant power creep. It was somewhat understandable, due to the nature of the show, that the power level scale had to adjust each set (though it was annoying to see the entire previous scale condensed to the lowest value each time), but it seemed like every single card type would ramp up every single time.
Ultra rares dropping once per 6 boxes has me pretty skeptical, too.

I know that they're about release a new dragon ball movie soon, but is there even much of a market for dragon ball stuff anymore? Was GT ever translated and/or carried by an US station?
I liked the artwork on the Bandai revamp. Shame that one died off. Browsing youtube, there's still decently sized tournaments dedicated to Score's DBZ CCG.

This is why Expanded Format broke the game in half cause the overall power creep from the GT sets made decks way too powerful. This also explains why alot of people who still play Score's DBZ CCG especially on YouTube prefer to play it as DBZ Focused where all the GT sets and promos are banned for use in unofficial tournaments. I did hear rumors that Trunks Energy Sphere is getting reprinted as an Ultra in the new game which is a staple in just about every deck.

Dragon Ball Z: Battle of Gods was only a limited release in theatres before FUNimation pulled the plug on it for a Blu-ray release later this year in November. The recent video games by Bandai Namco have seemed to dwindle over the years while the MMO is still region locked where you need to download an English patch in order to play it. There was an English Dub for Dragon Ball GT by FUNimation even though the series isn't canon to the Anime/Manga series.
I know Dragon Ball Z Kai (a rework of the series) has been airing for a few years.
FUNimation did a horrible job with Dragon Ball Z Kai since they replaced Bruce Faulconer, Tiffany Vollmer, Stephanie Nadolny, and Linda Young from the old DBZ dub which started after Pioneer/Ocean Group's dub of the series ended during Frieza Saga when Goku was about to fight against the Ginyu Force on Namek. Luckily for me I own the Pioneer/Ocean Group DBZ dub that was re-released by FUNimation just incase it gets taken down by copyright ninjas. "Rock the Dragon" and "Cha-la-head-cha-la" was so much better than "Dragon Soul" from the Kai dub.

There are now two different Sphere cards, one is villian only and one is hero only. Both are ultra rares, but they do not function exactly the same as the old Trunks' Energy Sphere so they may or may not be auto 3-ofs. Ultras are also one in 3 boxes now instead of 1 in 6 or whatever it used to be. The game looks fun and I'm pretty optimistic about it. Then again, I'm a raging DBZ fan so this is pretty exciting for me. I only played the original game casually (I was in middle school back in those days) but it was really good. If you're unsure about it but want to give it a try, I suggest downloading the new demo deck PDFs from the retro DBZ CCG site, proxying them up and giving them a whirl. You can use the old rulebook to walk you through it for the most part, with only a few minor rule changes. Hopefully we see an updated rule book here in the next couple weeks.
I heard that Organized Play won't be established for the new relaunch until next year is this true by any chance? I got into the original game a decade ago when Shadow Dragon Saga was the latest expansion while the only official pre-release I attended was for Lost Episodes Saga shortly before the game was discontinued. The old decks I have on me right now are Black Energetic Goku, Red Rush Piccolo, and Blue Speedball Roshi all of which I bought from my friends who used to play while I also still have my old trade stuff for the game as well.
Is there any chance we'll see these cards get reprinted for the relaunch?

I have been so preoccupied with the release of the new game that I have completely forgot about MTG. I haven't even logged on here since it was announced by retro during SDCC. I was trying to think of more ways to promote it and was like "oh yea, MTGS"... Good to see its already being talked about here.

"I heard that Organized Play won't be established for the new relaunch until next year is this true by any chance?"
This is true so far as any of us know. This info was let out by Aik, who is playing a major role in the new game.
So far, these cards have been confirmed. Some are slight variations...
Time Is A Warrior's Tool
Heroes Lucky Break
Android 18's Stare Down
Saiyan Style Mastery (Buu Saga)
Goku's Lucky Break
-TiaWT is a direct reprint, same picture and all IIRC.
-Hero's Lucky Break is now called Heroic Plan and it is an ultra rare. It's more of a 'Trunks Reconstruction' than a HLB, but they are very similar. Trunks Reconstruction is just a better HLB from GT and Heroic Plan is a direct reprint of it.
-Android 18's Stare Down is now just called 'Stare Down'. One of the new flavor rules for the upcoming game is that named cards can only be used by its matching personality.
-Saiyan Style Mastery from Buu Saga is being directly reprinted as 'Saiyan Empowered Mastety'.
-Goku's Lucky Break is being reprinted as 'Dragon Radar'. Although, there were several DB searchers that were analogous to GLB the first time around, and one was actually called 'Dragon Radar'.
The DBZ CCG reboot by Panini was officially released last Friday as most of my friends talked me into buying a booster box and starter deck for the game. Each Starter Deck comes with a random personality set from Lv. 1-4 and I ended up getting Vegeta with Saiyan Empowered Mastery which I traded for Gohan Lv. 1-4 with Red Enraged Mastery where I managed to score my first win against Black Devious Frieza although I haven't played against Saiyan Empowered Vegeta yet though.
Now keep in mind while this reboot is backwards compatible with Score's DBZ CCG you're only allowed to run the Panini cards for sanctioned tournaments which makes sense given the unwanted power creep from the old DBZ and GT sets as it doesn't give veteran players an unfair advantage against newcomers by evening the playing field. I'm okay with it personally but some diehard fans of Score's DBZ CCG might see it differently as a missed opportunity for Panini not to allow players to use their old cards in sanctioned tournaments.

^^I played original DBZ and I wouldn't want those cards playable one bit. Champion Drill alone makes new players have such an extreme disadvantage. Good call on Panini's side.
Anyways, I love the original DBZ card game, and I mean LOVED. Just a few things concern me:
-I so hope this game goes noticed.
-Absolute staples such as Trunks Energy Sphere, now an Ultra Rare.
-Super Saiyan God Goku Promo is disgusting in this game.
Aside from that some things that excite me:
-Diverse Choices: Orange Goku, Red/Black Gohan, Red/Blue/Black Frieza, Red/Saiyan Vegeta, Blue Ginyu even? Hell, Blue Trunks control may be a strong meta deck.
-Red's card pool is nuts. Red Frieza is something I will be trying. High power stages and great powers. Gohan also seems very strong for this.
-Saiyan Vegeta. Saiyan cards hit so hard and Vegeta level 3 and 4 are the nuts.
-Namekian/Red(?) Piccolo winning by MPPV is the sleeper if competitive takes off I think.
I'm really excited to hear if anyone else is getting into this game and what you're thinking. I'm going to try to pick up a starter if my card shop carries it.
I used to see kids at my daycare play this back in the 90's, though I never understood how to play, myself. It was certainly interesting to watch, though, and I was interested in playing it at the time - I might look into it if there are events nearby that I can attend or something like that.

I played a bit with some friends over the weekend and I'm really happy with everything except Namekian aggro decks that loop dragonballs over and over with a level of card advantage thats a bit much to beat. Plus the spheres being UR is stupid as hell. Well, that and that a few of the, mostly first set I'm sure "this personality is really for this archetype and nothing else" kind of stuff.
Little backround, I was top 64 at one of the DBZ world championships, had won an invite to the invitational back in 2004, and played the game really seriously. I didn't make as much money at it as I did Yugioh back then, but still it was my baby.
I really hope they switch from power levels outright to just having the chart printed on characters. Its the only way I can really see to incorporate what they are wanting to do with not having the sets tied to saga's like in the old score game where I was Judge 106977 (or 957, I cant remember, I just know that Kai [the new games head designer, original world champion, and one of the designers of the old game] used to call me by number since he kept forgetting my name whenever I saw him at a tournament)
I just really hate Namekian mastery making it so that if only one ball is in play it can't be captured since they have such huge card advantage bonus's for looping the same ball over and over. And Saiyan feels a bit linear. Needs a little boost, but I cant wait for set 2 to increase versatility.
I really want to play Saiyan Trunks. Being able to know, for the most part, whether they will have blocks or not, whether they have a sphere, etc once you (quickly re saiyan mastery) hit level two is insanely good. Plus he has one of the highest power levels you can reach other than the stupid ssgod goku which is, I think, less of a problem than we think since a since his stages drop pretty fast and his mid tier stages are good, but not insane. Yes, if you can power up to full its sick, but there are ways to stop that like, playing a single physical attack that has a decent + or does its stages as stages. It does provide a problem for Saiyan decks who need to be more powerful to get bonuses though.
Awesome to see another veteran player out there Elvish Crack Piper. I top 4'd a Regionals or Nationals long ago (can't remember, I was like 9 or something lol) with Cell Saga Mastery Saiyan Broly/ Vegeta Sensei during GT/Z. So overpowered.
Is Namekian that bad? I was thinking they would be the MPPV deck, but the aggro doesn't seem that bad from just looking over the cards.
And yea on SSG Goku, for me, it's the problem of his huge power levels along with having the best level 1 power in the game. He may not be as oppressive as it seems like you said if you can keep him off the millions, but he is tier 1 by far I think. Red Energy shield + Red's Physical attacks sounds like someone could have a blowout turn with this Goku, considering the Red physical pool and card advantage is amazing. Go in with an Energy Sphere and not even a Time will save them from the onslaught.
Also, good idea with Trunks Saiyan, I didn't think about that. His ability really offsets Saiyan's lack of card advantage and ensures card quality at later levels. I personally prefer Vegeta (at least without playing yet), but I'm liking all of the options. I'm curious now if Vegeta will be stronger due to the strength of level 3 and 4, or Trunk's because of his hand sculpting.
I hope in later sets they really start focusing on less obvious choice personality /masteries, and make more personalities like this set's Frieza and Gohan.
Yeah, I took 2nd place at the Portland, Oregon regional in 2004 with Orange HT Trunks slowball. I lost to Jason playing his SWK Red aggro deck that, later on that year, he won worlds with. My worlds deck was orange australia promo version of gohan with the eternal dragon thing/stop combo to setup a, basically, combo kill off of Z Warriors Gather looped twice getting every ally in my deck out into a killshot. Sadly, because of those ******* golden tickets, I dropped from 58th place in terms of points to 67th and didn't get to day 2. Makes me happy magic gives you byes in round one and not just extra points ******* stupid, but meh.
At the Invitational I ran the ally deck that was able to run level 3 allies, did dumb stuff, got top 32 or something and brought back a ******* epic amount of ultra rares. I think I won 2 each of every ultra rare in the game or something. I came back to town with more ultra rares then the entire playerbase combined, silly silly.
Namekian can win with MPPV, but it can also just overwhelm with dragonball based card advantage. Imagine using Namekian Palm Shots. IF you hit, then its +1 anger off of its shuffle and then you can search out a dragonball for its effect (plus drawing bottom card of deck) and then you go and grab Dragonball 5 which raises your anger 1, draws a card, and then rejuvinates 1, which raises your anger again for a total of 3 off a single card. And it gives you 5 powerstages.
Basically, Namekian has the card advantage in spades. Also, because dragonball 2(?) lowers a personality a level and they have tons of ways to search out and replay dragonballs they also have the easiest source of anti MPPV in the game.
For Trunks, the biggest advantage is really level 2. Getting to know what cards they are going to have is just really good and being able to put setups into their hand when they are defending is really good. Sure, Vegeta level 3 does a ton of damage, but Trunks level 3 lets you just fill their hand full of 3 energy attacks before you whack them down to zero with a big physical attack or you can also just fill their hand full of non-combats and then just murder them. Not quite as fast as what level 3vegeta can do, but they just cant stop it. Plus his level 3 and 4 draw a card
Nice dude, 2 of every Ultra? Jeez lol I would love to have my hands on that if just for collector value! The most I won was a single Champion Drill, which was actually amazing. It wasn't a worlds though oddly, it makes me wonder if it was supposed to be a different promo because it was towards the end of DBGT's life span. Not going to complain though lol.
And ahh you were one of those Orange players! After I got destroyed by Orange my first tournament (Running Red Goku I think), I got scared into running nothing but Villains for Android 17 smirks and Cell's Presence
And oh god I just read Namekian Palm shots. I see what you mean, wow. And Piccolo's powers are very strong as well. Looks like Namekian is once again going to be a insane card advantage machine slowly delivering smackdown a million attacks at a time. Red also has similar card advantage as well. Red Left Bolt, Heel Kick, Shattering Leap, Double Strike. These two are going to be delivering the beats, but Namekian might be a bit stronger.
So, I also bought a starter deck and am gathering people for local tournaments. Ended up getting Orange Goku which seems cool, but orange's pool doesn't seem to stack up to the others. The defense shields are great though, I'm going to see how this can work. Level 4 Goku is a house and with the Orange Devouring Drill, Kao-Ken, and Over 9000, Goku can get there quick and set up huge Kamehamehas and overwhelm with drill advantage, just not sure if it can match Namekian and Red Speed.
Well, I had other decks, but that was what I ended up doing.
Orange HT Trunks was able to operate very efficiently since his HT power capped energy attack damage at 2 life cards so I ran the 2 blocks that powered up to full and every single card that blocked all physicals so, effectively, my deck had 10 or so "block all physicals" in it. Basically, I soaked a physical attack, blocked the second physical attack and powered up to full, and soaked the 3rd physical attack. The way that Jason ended up beating me was because his dead would chain a ridiculousness number of attacks per turn. Both decks ran the mastery that tutored up drills so it was just toolkit control each time.
Tournament rewards weren't exactly standardized all that well outside of worlds/invitationals. The guy who gave out the prizes for my regional ended up giving me and my friend a bunch of extra ***** when me, him, and all of the "named" players hung out afterwards. Granted, that guy also gave Jason like 30 copies of Champions Drill to sell on eBay where they'd split the cash. He eventually got let go for embezzlement, but hey, free cards.
I played black a lot when I was in town and it was a smaller player pool. I really enjoyed how the control elements of all the cards worked together to kill peoples hands, but in bigger tournaments I played orange because I needed the versatility and couldn't tune my deck and solidly.
Red might be able to do some crazy stuff, but namekian looks like it does the same stuff but better in every way.
Ah yea Orange HT Trunks was a sick deck, even up until the very end. It was so annoying to play against because I like to be the beatdown in these games lol. I loved to play Goku and Majin Buu Red with the local community, but for major events I suited up Broly. Talk about chaining ridiculous amounts of attacks.
And wow on the champion drills, I felt cool having just 1 haha. Seems like one of the reasons Score went away.
And yea we'll see what the meta shapes up to be in this reboot. And I dunno, Red seems a little bit worse, but Red can be Goku/Frieza/Gohan and Namekian can't so we'll have to see if that matters.
I'm a little annoyed with trying to build Orange though. Quite a few weak attacks, and it takes a few turns to reach level 4 Goku. Ginyu is also a monstrous deck. Guldo is so nuts, like a more fragile but just as consistent Trunks Saga Black Style Mastery.
Yeah, it was a bit silly. It's the same for magic, I mean, every TO used to get like 30 of the promo's for gateway, right? Basically, any employee of Score who ran events had access to infinite black lotus's and one of them really abused it.
Namekian Mastery can be used by Gohan, actually, and once you reach level 4 gohan with namekian mastery you pretty much can't lose. They changed Namekian to be Namekian Heritage as well as those trained by Namekians. Presumably this will mean videl can use Saiyan mastery if they ever print her as a MP, however unlikely. I don't think it will matter though. Since they aren't going off of Saga's then there will not be a drop in Namekian cards like there was in the first game. Plus, like before, Cell will able to be played as a Namekian so there will be plenty of cards to go off of.
HT Trunks was just... when it came to slowing the game down it really was just the best, you know? Thing with the leveling is that you should probably not focus so much on rushing to level four, but on building a deck that can protect itself while reaching it. Just run the drill that levels you up and whatever level you reach is going to be really good. In fact, honestly, I'd rather just use the level 1 and 2, plus drawing cards, to get some drills out and then sit at level 3. Rejuvinating 5 drills a turn is probably nice and if you ever get a chance to reach level 4 then its godly, but not neccesary
