Mortal Kombat and Street Fighter are two of the best-known and most influential and definitive fighting game franchises, yet there has never been a crossover between them, to the best of my knowledge. Street Fighter has crossed over with Marvel comics in Marvel versus Capcom and Mortal Kombat has crossed over with DC Comics in Mortal Kombat versus DC, but they have not crossed over with each other, incredibly.
What does everyone else say about this? Will these two famous franchises ever cross over? If so, how awesome would such a crossover be? Would it be akin to Disney and Warner Bros. joining their characters in Who Framed Roger Rabbit or Jackie Chan and Let Li being together in Forbidden Kingdom? I await your responses.

I've been saying this needed to happen since the first crossover games. Honestly, who cares about Street Fighter vs. Tekken or SNK or Marvel or whatever? Give me Ryu vs. Scorpion, damn it! I want to be able to do this in a game!

I care. Tekken is better than MK could ever hope to be. MK has always used nice visuals and gratuitous gore to make up for sub par game play. Ryu vs Jin (awesome) is far more appealing to me than Ryu vs Scorpion (yawn).
Ultimately though I don't see it happening. Fighting games tend to fall into two types. The kind that block by pressing back like SF and Tekken and the kind that use a different button to block like MK and Soul Caliber. Trying to mix the two types probably wouldn't work very well.
Yeah and in Tekken he primarily punches and kicks and only used the sword for special attacks, where as in Soul Calibur it's the other way around. The basic mechanics of the games are different, it has nothing to do with what characters are in them. The only way it would work is if they did two games like they're doing with the SF/Tekken cross overs with each developer making their version of the game. Even then it would probably be rough to make the signature moves we're all accustom to cross over smoothly.
Doubt it. Capcom makes it a point for their big Street Fighter games to be profitable in both Japan and the Western market. Mortal Kombat is not really that big in Japan, so the crossover wouldn't wow too many players over there. Also, Netherrealms Studio would probably only release Mortal Kombat games with excessive gore, which wouldn't sit well with the Japanese VG censorship board. In the end, heavy compromises would have to be made between both licenses for such a crossover to be born.

Strange considering how open they are with print media and television.

Life is a beautiful engineer, yet a brutal scientist.
Well considering If Capcom goes bankrupt due to their terrible business practices and nobody buys the Street Fighter IP from them, I'd say Mortal Kombat vs. Killer Instinct is more likely to happen than Mortal Kombat vs. Street Fighter.

Bison vs Raiden could be pretty sick tho.
