Now I'm an old school Pokemon player and played Pokemon Yellow and red when they first came out on the first gameboy (bulky thing, took 4 AA batteries, see-through casing). I have played all versions of Pokemon up until Diamond as well as bought the new gameboys for each one. At this point my Nintendo DS screen gave me a ghost image, so I could not play White & Black series with a busted screen.
Now with the big hype of "X & Y", I'm not sure if I should buy a new 3DS and Pokemon Y. It's been years since I've played Pokemon is all. Is it worth it? (will cost me $300)

Given that the 3DS has a few other great titles to sink your teeth into already I would say yes. Simply to Pokemon, though, that would be entirely subjective. How much do you enjoy Pokemon? Given you have some old school experience you obviously like it more than the average gamer, so maybe the answer I would give you is still yes. I say this because I bought it and I have been thoroughly enjoying it.
The new game is a lot of fun and if you have a lot of friends that play it then it will be exponentially more enjoyable of an experience. Also, if you have any interest in playing it competitively, then I would most assuredly say yes; they added a few new features to make competitive play much easier to get into.
My advice is to look into the game and judge for yourself, but my opinion is biased and I say go for it.
As I mentioned, there are some great titles for the 3DS, are you interested in any of them?

Well I don't know how much exactly the 3DS does cost in Australia, the original 3DS model itself was onsale recently at Best Buys and Amazon in the US for 125 and 140. You can find a cheaper 3DS at new prices probably, and if not, there is always used units to look at. I suppose the 2DS, as bad as it is, is always an option.
I personally think the new Pokemon games fall very flat. If you are playing the games for the story, its terrible, and the game is far too easy. You never have to catch one single Pokemon to beat the game, and yet the game gives you a team of 4 Pokemon, one of which completely obliterates every single Pokemon Team Flare can throw at you. You are also hopelessly over-leveled for the entire game, and there is no real way to fix it. It's baby's first Pokemon, and there is no challenge, no substance in the gameplay.
If you are wanting 3D, also forget it. Most of the game the 3D is forced off due to already existing framerate and lag issues. What little the 3D is allowed for causes the framerate to drop even further and the game to lag even harder.
What does save the game is the online aspect, which is finally good on a Nintendo product. Battling online has never been easier, and if this is what you want the game for, then it is well worth the purchase. I only wish the Friend List supported more than 100 people.
I would say not to get a 3DS just for Pokemon, but if you're at all interested in Fire Emblem, Monster Hunter, Ocarina of Time, Luigi's Mansion, and a few others as well as Pokemon . . . then it's worth picking up for sure.
Pokemon has been the only reason I have ever purchased a Nintendo handheld. As for X/Y, I haven't heard a lot of hype about it beyond the new Mega Evolutions and one part of the game where some "creepy" girl comes out of nowhere. It's not actually that creepy but there's a buzz around it. Is it worth it? If you have the money and like Pokemon, sure.
I would say yes as well. If you will enjoy the game why not. The game has a lot of replay value including the rabbit hole of competitive. The library is really good (zeldas, and soon to be smash brothers/and new mario kart.)
I bought mine off of craigslist for 100 if you want it for just pokemon initially i would suggest doing the same, no reason to buy it brand new.
What I've heard is that if you liked Yellow you'll probably like X and/or Y, they're apparently the most classically Pokemon-styled Pokemon games for a while.
I probably could phrase that better, whatever.
Personally I'm waiting for pricedrops on a few 3DS games I like the look of, then I'll grab a few games and a 2DS.
