Agree agree agree. I've always had a softspot for KyoAni and have loved some of their more "boring" series (Hyouka being a good example; the cultural festival arc was great storytelling and could've lasted another seven episodes in my eyes). But Kyoukai no Kanata takes the "boring" cake. It has all the great KyoAni hallmarks, like meticulous storyboarding -- so many insignificant background elements animated! -- but the story...ugh....
yeah, the story's not great (although I really liked the one where had to defeat the youmu by dancing)
It's good that KyoAni is doing something a little different while putting their distinctive moe flavor on it.

KnK is one of those shows that I don't have the time for right now, but which I don't have to courage to drop for good, because I expect to finish it sooner or later. But since opinion on it is pretty negative so far, maybe I should actually drop it for good. I did drop Coppelion after episode 1, after all.
In other news, I watched some SamuMenco with my brother, and now it's one of the few anime series he's watching by himself. That's the power of justice for you!
I'm not following any of the current anime this season. I've been watching older series such as:
Future Diary (on DVD)
AKB0048 (on DVD)
High School DxD (on DVD)
Tokyo Majin (on DVD)
We Without Wings (on DVD)
Michiko & Hatchin (on DVD)
Is This a Zombie of the Dead (on DVD)
Love Live (on Hulu)
Currently catching up on:
Pet Girl of Sakurasou (on Hulu; up to episode 13)

Got myself the second season of ''The Mysterious Cities of Gold'', in DVD! This France/Japan collaboration work is a small piece of art that continue something from my childhood!

Casual crazy magic player, otaku maniac, unrully cosplayer, what did you expect me to be?
So while following the droves of anime I'm watching this season, I am also rewatching Neon Genesis Evangelion. I remember not liking it very much the first time, and this time, with my more developed tastes, I can still say I do not like it very much. Part of it almost definitely has to do with how dated it is. I'm up to episode twelve and honestly it's a slog getting through each episode. Few of the characters feel likable, and the interesting backstory and the power the Angels evoke as villains is mostly hidden in the background so far. I can understand an anime standing on its legacy, but rewatching this episode by episode it really isn't doing it for me.
Shinji is very whiny and he tends to backpedal a lot in terms of the progress he has made. Rei and Asuka are as of yet completely unlikable, with little to no development and flimsy archetypes to serve in the meantime. Misato is mildly interesting but is a bit annoying. And the random splices of comedy, ecchi, and scenes taken from a typical high school anime thrown into Shinji's despair stuff is just odd. The theme and overall feel of the episodes are very inconsistent, and for twelve episodes there has been a lot of filler that has done a poor job at developing anyone, with Shinji's development being retracted when his losing resolve is convenient for the writers, Asuka's development not going anywhere significant in four episodes, and Rei not really doing anything for the first half of the season.
I can understand the reasons why this anime was praised and is still remembered, but for me so far it seems dated, cliched, and a bit boring honestly. Maybe the later episodes will help Shinji out in what appears to be a character-centric drama or something, but insofar it has not been outstanding as I had hoped it would be now that I've grown.
~Slight spoilers for Samemenco 7, look with caution
EDIT: I'm kind of disappointed with Samemenco as of episode 7 as well. I was hoping we'd just get a nice slice of the daily lives of Hayama and Gotobro forever. I doubt that to be the case now though.
Shinji is a perfect example of the fact that, sometimes, realism makes for a very poor story. Most teenagers thrown into the cockpit of a giant mecha wouldn't handle it very well... but that's not really what people watch those kinds of shows for.
That said, Kaworu serves as a saving grace for Shinji, mostly because Shinji's uketasticness works in his favour as far as that pairing is concerned. Though that's a bit too little too late.
Let me know your thoughts when you get to episode 7. All I can say is ":uhh:"
That was pretty damn bizarre, that's for sure. Still, I've got enough faith for the writers to can explain it all without going "Oh, we just decided to randomly switch genres, couldn't you see where this is going?".
Watched the second Gintama movie last week, and I found it pretty damn great despite the fact that I've never actually watched the series. As the result, it was a mixed bag of excellent gags and running gags that I had no way to recognize. Oh, and great action scenes. Overall, it did a great job of motivating me to watch the series, and I couldn't ask for more. I might not do it until the second half of December, though.
I also happened to attend a live mini-concert of Uesaka Sumire at the same event. There is something heartwarming about the producer telling stories of huge concerts of popular idol bands that might happen here in Russia sometimes - while in the meantime, we get this one girl who's a huge fan of Russia and sings Katyusha with the audience. I don't know about you, but I'd take a single passionate voice actress who got her dream come true over a group of idols I don't care about.
There's a half-decent theory concerning the latest SamuMenco developments, here's a gist of it:
Has SF some reality alteration powers?
The world keeps molding itself to give him his desires, but doing a clumsy job of it.
He wanted to compete with Flamenco Girl. Bam, a mysterious scientist contacts him and starts designing science fiction gadgets.
He wanted a better origin? It turns out his parents were murdered.
He wanted villains? Bam, GG necksnapping.
Villains are too violent and powerful? Bam, they get weaker and weaker. The second villain goes from killing to kidnapping. The third villain just targeted SF. The fourth one was going to make people gossip more. Eventually you had a villain much, much, much weaker than GG who was just buying fruit.
But the running theme of it is that no matter how much reality alters itself to let him play the hero, no matter how much he tries to be the hero, he feels empty and hollow. He realizes deep down that what he’s doing isn’t real, that he’s the one creating this threat just for the sake of his own glory. No matter how much he tries to be a hero, he realizes that that’s just the dream of a boy.
But he can’t accept that, and he’s just falling, further and further into his delusion.
Meanwhile, I finally finished Prisma Ilya and have 1 episode left of Servant x Service. Maybe I'll actually be able to clear my backlog by the end of the year?..
Kyoani no Katana (ya ok I know what it is really called)...I dunno. I watched to ep 5. It's not really grabbing me much, but then again Kyoani's stuff with like K-On and the like have always had this "boring" element to it that you generally can't get rid of. I really don't know what to say about it though.
Kill la Kill is still amazing. I'm convinced that Trigger wanted to make it as ridiculous as Gurren Lagaan too. Dunno how it's gonna end though, including that thing with Mako. Then again, it would be hilarious to see galaxy shuriken again.
I watched the first five minutes of SamuMenco ep. 8 just to see if we were being trolled at the end of ep. 7. Since we apparently weren't, I don't know if I have the desire to keep watching.

KyoAni does what they do and they do it well. If you don't like the typical KyoAni stuff I don't think KnK is the thing to make you like them.
I don't get the huge hype over Kill la Kill. It's cool and stuff but Ryuko is a pretty boring character. The villains, especially Satsuki are great, but Trigger didn't handle Ryuko as well as Simone was handled in TTGL in my opinion. Satsuki's reasons for what she is doing are even more compelling than Ryuko's to me.

I wouldn't be too hasty with this: they might reveal that it's a ruse two or three episodes later, for all we know. At the very least, they understand very well the absurdity of the whole thing, so it must have happened for a reason.

What do you guys think?
Don't forget that Simon didn't get proper development until around episode 10, and KlK is a two-cour series, so Ryuko can still get all the development she deserves. Though to be honest, I'm getting an impression that the "villains" are actually the heroes, and Ryuko just came to crash their party. Good thing that we have the likes of Sanageyama and Gamagoori to oppose her.

Casual crazy magic player, otaku maniac, unrully cosplayer, what did you expect me to be?
I'm reading Spice & Wolf volume 6. On page 40 I found this gem:
but hot springs were places where those who would do anything to extend their lives even a second longer would gather, and even if killed, they did not die.
"A rich man thinks all other people are rich, and an intelligent man thinks all other people are similarly gifted. Both are always terribly shocked when they discover the truth of the world. You, my dear brother, are a pious man." - Strahd von Zarovich
Because most of this collection was collected troguth unnusual means. If I was to put up that on MAL, then only the in disk titles would be legit. Long story short, most of those are original verisons with subs from sub teams.

I... don't really understand. I think you have some kind of misconception about what these services are. It's just like a list for you to keep track of which anime you've watched, are currently watching, have dropped, etc. It's the equivalent of writing the names of things like you did in your post earlier, just in a nicer format.
For example, here's my Hummingbird. You can keep track of which currently airing shows you're watching on CrunchyRoll, shows you watched on TV a long time ago, etc etc. There is nothing about owning DVDs or whatever it is you're thinking of.
