Well it appears karma has finally caught up to Tomaharo Saitou. he was just DQed today from GP: Florence without Prize after being busted for stalling. I know there have been complaints in the past about it. Think the judges on hand are finally starting to pay attention to all the complaints?
Announcement - Player Disqualified Without Prize
by David Sutcliffe
We are never pleased to have to pass on bad news, so we are sad that we have to announce that Japan's Tomaharo Saitou has been disqualified without prize from Grand Prix Florence following his sixth round match.
Head Judge, Level-4 Nick Sephton, explained why the disqualification occurred:
"We disqualified this player for Stalling, after it was observed that his play speed seemed to change based on his observation of the clock. It was observed by a high-level judge that twice in the round he appeared to change his play speed based on considerations that were outside the game. Consulting among the senior judges we decided that, on the basis of what we had observed, we had no choice but to disqualify the player."
Nick continued with advice for players wanting to avoid falling foul of this rule themselves:
"Players should be able to play at a reasonable pace throughout a round. Judges recognise that a player's speed of play can change during a game - Magic is a complicated game and produces difficult situations for players - but it's important that players are still able to play at a speed that allows games to be completed. It's a valid play skill to be able to make difficult decisions quickly."
Let me start by saying that we can't really judge the player without having been there. With that said, I am pleased to see that pushing time on the round and counting warnings, like Tomoharu Saito did in many high level tournaments, is being cracked down on. It sends the right message to players and judges everywhere.
Yeah, some of us can't judge him per se, but a lot of people who did face him when he was at Columbus this year were complaining about his slow play. Not only that this was witnessed by spectators at many events. This is a recurring problem he has had, but this is indeed the first time it has led to DQ. Also as a side note, barring something happening to Brad Nelson, Saito now has no way to win PoY.

If he is suspended for Worlds he can't pass Brad. He could still theoretically do it with a top 2+brad getting no more than the bare minimum.
I am glad to see that judges are taking a stand against pro players out there who like to bend the rules just because of who they are. I believe that this game should be played as fairly as possible and the judges should be as fair as possible no matter if they are friends with the players or not.
It's a shame to see him DQed but maybe this is a warning to him.

Which is why I said, barring something happening. But, yes a win or 2nd will allow Saito to get PoY, ASSUMING Brad does not place in the top 200. In which Case Saito HAS to win to get PoY, otherwise he would tie Brad for points at 66 points. It does raise an interesting question though, if there is a tie, what is the tie breaker if there is one?
Thought Scour is terrible in BV. How many flashback spells are being run? Say roughly 15. This gives you a roughly 38% chance of milling one flashback spell. And even if you do, you paid one mana to cantrip and dump an overcosted spell. Alchemy, Geistflame, Devil's play, etc. all cost much more to flash back than your average card, so you're not getting full value out of it.
You'd much rather play Ponder. At least that generates a tangible advantage.

iirc, it's a Standard playoff between the tied players; can't remember if it's 1 game or first-to-2, though, but the fact that the 1-game idea is in my mind makes me think that it's a 1-game playoff.
I wanted to read more about this but all the links posted go to the main coverage page and there doesn't seem to be anything on the page about it when i search for "saito" "dq" etc. Bad links or was it taken down?

With all the shady behavior I perceive from so many of these pros, I'm glad that someone finally got punished for it. It doesn't make anyone want to play competitively if they know that they are going to lose matches to cheaters.

Unless they've changed things, it's a five-game playoff to be played at the next PT. That's a few years old but I remember something from old coverage a few years ago when that very possibility came up.

Don't read anything LaPille. Your brain will thank you later. ----> VICTORY!
Anyone can write an article on how to play Magic as far as getting enough sleep and food and stuff like that. I am surprised Channelfireball let him put that article up on their site after this incident.

If I remember correctly, the article was posted about 2 weeks ago. The replies to it have continued after the recent incident.
Well he's not the only one that will cheat at GP's and such. I am wondering what channelfireball would do because of this incident.
If he is suspended, he will presumably be kicked for as long as the suspension lasts and maybe just cut entirely. If he isn't it becomes more awkward, though I would guess that they cut him loose, as he only writes real articles (i.e. tourny reports or strategy articles) once every month or two (there was more content in Mori's amazing two part report than there has been in all of Saito's articles this year imo).
Also, he has a couple new tweets up. Google translate gives me a very vague idea of what he is saying, but I was wondering if anyone could translate them into reasonable English.
Shame, what a way to reflect on his recent induction into the Hall of Fame, especially after bumping longtime comeback champ Anton Jonsson.
He hasn't been inducted yet. Only voted in. Induction happens at Worlds, and if he is suspended prior to that for this DQ (which is a very real possibility), he cannot be inducted and loses his place.

I was driven from this once-great site by abusive mods and admins, who create rules out of thin air to punish people for breaking them (meaning the rule does not exist under forum rules) and selectively enforce the rules that are written on the forum rules. I am currently lurking while deleting 6 years and 2 months of posting history. I will return when ExpiredRascals, Teia Rabishu and Blinking Spirit are no longer in power.
Its a shame that a great player like that would just up and play slow because he wants to draw or something else. Not very cool for him to present himself as a magic player

Saito is a notorious cheater and has been accused of a range of different cheating techniques so it's nice to see it catch up to him.

Wow, thats rather hilarious. One can only hope that he learns from this incident and becomes better for it.

"寝て起きてもやっぱりよく分からないや。戦闘がしばらくなかったゲームで突然除去からの10体フルアタックされて難しくて考えたのが偶然残り時間3分を確認した後だったってゆう。それでDQは正直不思議"
"残り時間が少ないから遅くなっていたわけではない事を何度も伝えたけど駄目だった、そしてその場では裁定に従うしかなかった。ヘッドジャッジの判断が絶対だからこそ、大好きな大きいトーナメントが成立している事を僕は知ってる。"
