Mainly I'm looking for uncommons/rares that are going for under 5.01 right now that would be well worth the expense later? Either for nice casual decks, or cards that are sure to go up in value, really.
I'm picking up 4 Griselbrands at the prerelase, i'll buy them for $12 each.
I don't think they'll be worth $12, but I'm comfortable shelling out a few extra dollars to get them immediately, and I REALLY want 2 for a standard black deck, and 2 for my two edh decks that are in progress.
I've been considering picking up 2 or 3 playsets of Silverblade Paladin. $2.50 seems very cheap for such a powerful dude. He should see significant play after Mirran Crusader rotates out.
In summation.....Star Trek wins a prolonged naval battle against superior, yet less technologically advanced, numbers, with Picard leading the assault, while Kirk takes your soul by laying out Solo and probably his manservant Chewy as well, before impregnating and ditching your Princess.
I think Misthallow Sphinx has a ton of potential. At $5 or less, it's not a bad risk to take. A year from now we could really be seeing a staple card, and when that happens to a mythic, it'd jump over $10-15 if that happens.
I preordered two playsets of Desolate Lighthouse at lest than $2.50 each. They'll see play in a lot of formats and RTR ought to make the color pairing easier to bear. I think they're a good call.
I got four of basically every Rare that was $1 or less-
I remember when Dungeon Geists were a $0.50 card,
and even one such "victory" would offset the losses
I also got:
Avacyn x4 (good deal on eBay)
Sigarda x2 (NO WAY this chick doesn't see heavy play- she may actually go up in value from $15)
Gisela x2 (great Frites target with one of the most insane buffs ever printed- she's what Urabrask the Hidden should have been)
Bruna x2 (mostly just for my own amusement- I doubt she'll be worth much)
Griselbrand x2 (again, great for frites)
Temporal Mastery x2 (def. a gamble, but I want two for a (U/R) deck I'm making)
Tamiyo x2 (ditto)
Cavern of Souls x4 (I *despise* this land, but I seriously doubt it will go down much from the $15/each I paid).
Alchemists Refuge, Isolated Lighthouse, Slayers' Stronghold x4 (I doubt these will rise much, if any, but I want to complete my collection)
Momir Vig, Simic Visionary
Melek, Izzet Paragon
Oona, Queen of the Fae
Bruna, Light of Alabaster
Gisela, Blade of Goldnight
Rhys the Redeemed
Jarad, Golgari Lich Lord
Sen Triplets

I did that with Geists last season, and bought 8. I was certainly happy when they jumped liked I thought they would, however you also need to know when to "sell." It's more often you'll see a $2 rare jump to $5-7 than a $.50 rare jump to $5. I think Geists was a rarity to be honest, and most sites have the sleeper hits already hovering around the $3-5 mark.
Been saying it since it was spoiled: Reforge the Soul. Zealous Conscripts is solid too, though I don't think it'll go upwards of two or three US dollars. The rare lands seem reasonably priced too. Griselbrand seems a good bet as well.
The following cards are all preordering for $1 or less, so it's unlikely you'll lose money.
Divine Deflection
Riders of Gavony (the effect is permanent, this is very good against lots of creature decks like other Human decks, Zombie decks, Delver Spirits, etc.)
Lunar Mystic
Stolen Goods (EDH)
Gloom Surgeon (Cheap aggressive creature that doesn't die in combat.)
Archwing Dragon (remember Hellrider?)
Zealous Conscripts
Soul of the Harvest (EDH)
Griselbrand started out at $8 at SCG, and I figured it was a bit underpriced there. I never preorder, but I figured I'd get 2 of those for my French Rites deck, which basically doesn't need anything else from this entire set. It quickly went up to $10 on SCG, and earlier today it was the only mythic sold out (they'd gotten two Temporal Masteries back "in stock", whatever that means for preorders), so I'm guessing a few other people also thought Griselbrand was a good buy at that price. Maybe people have been testing him in reanimator already.

I'm not terribly familiar with Frites, but I know they'll be wanting something nice to replace Elesh Norn when she rotates.
Griselbrand, Gisela, and Sigarda all seem like things they might be interested in,
and cards that I doubt will go down much from their current preorder (*especially* Sigarda- she'll be everywhere).
I could see them using Avacyn, as well, but the other three seem like better bets.
Foils have been up for a while, and I preordered most all of them that were under $1.
Some are especially cheap right now, like Riders of Gavony, Elgaud Shieldmate, Lunar Mystic, Tandem Lookout, Burn at the Stake, Blood Artist, Nephalia Smuggler, Bower Passage, Howlgeist, and Wolfir Silverheart...
FWIW, Foils tend to go up in value more reliably than non-foils,
at least in my experience.

I agree with most of this post, but Hellrider and the Dragon are not comparable.
That said, a dragon that is -borderline playable- at rare has potential for sure.

Lunar Mystic
Whenever you cast an instant spell, you may pay 1. If you do, draw a card.
I think it has serious potential. This card can produce a rather marginal CA if it wont eat some removal.
Archwing Dragon
Flying, haste
At the beginning of the end step, return Archwing Dragon to its owner's hand.
Reasonable casting cost and decent damage. I wouldnt care about this card if it wouldnt have flying...but since it does..well.

Hellrider was overlooked when first released, preordering for $0.50. Now it's $3-4. It's probably better than Archwing, but the dragon avoids sweepers like a boss.

Hellrider lets you alpha strike in spite of blockers, making it a beast in a weenie/token deck. Archwing doesn't have that kind of versatility. Still probably a good pickup, but no where near Hellrider.
I hate to say this, but a safe pickup right now is Cavern of Souls. It's going to get played in EVERY format, like Snapcaster. Unless it gets banned somewhere (not impossible given how warping it is) it will never drop under $20. I plan on picking up a playset of foils at my earliest opportunity. Mostly because I need them for my all-foil Legacy Elves deck, but also because it's a safe investment.
One thing to keep in mind with archwing dragon though is you have to keep recasting him. That's a big mana sink. For the decks that want him (i.e. aggressive decks that really want to get in that final 4 damage) that's not a huge negative... but the longer the game goes the worse that gets. Also...I'd still prefer hellrider to him myself and I don't think many decks will run both.
I'm speculating that Terminus and Reforge the Soul are going to surprise many doubters. Players generally do not like conditional cards, but the conditions on these are minimized by the level of already used support cards in type 1.5 and the fact that Standard can afford to play them for their full cc. I like Griselbrand as well - best demon of all time.

Agreed. This is a VERY powerful card. Best five drop red has had since Demigod of Revenge imo.
