Am I the only one who thinks this card is just a little ridiculous? I understand it SEEMS very slow, but obviously this is meant for a control deck, and a control deck is designed to play the long game. Control decks are also designed to not take damage, because they need to make it to the long game. If you are able to get 4 counters on this thing, which probably isn't unlikely in a control deck especially if you drop this on turn 2, is completely game over.
For 2 mana you get a 4/4 flying angel. At instant speed. As many times as you want. For the rest of the game. It's easy to look at the incredibly fast and efficient goblins and vampires in the set and go ZOMFG AGGROZ!!!!!!!!!111!!ONE!!!, but this is a spectacular card I think it really needs some examination.

It's a shame we lose out on pollen lullaby. A pseudo-fog deck could come about, just guarding from damage and countering spells long enough to start making a flying army for FREE. Excellent card. Slow, perhaps, but excellent.
This card is also good as SB tech against control...
I was just about to say, this card is actually great against control decks.
And unlike the blue rare quest card spoiled yesterday, this one isn't win more and isn't much of a stretch to achieve. It's like Wizards realized Hoofprints of the Stag was too slow and remade it to go off in a different but faster way.
The key here is to use the ascension to mess with the tempo. People will be so anxious to rush damage into your face, it shouldn't be hard to get them to overextend into a DoJ or waste burn targeting your face, then all the sudden Baneslayer pops in to ruin their day.
I dunno, with all the quests I see enchantment hate coming back into sideboards at the very least, even if they drop it turn 2 you have 4 turns to draw enchant removal. Qisali Pridemage is still in standard and he will probably see greater play depending on the other ascension cards.
I love it, it's one of my favorite rares so far. I run Enduring Ideal, and this is EXACTLY the kind of card I've been waiting for. Just nutty in a fog deck, and AWESOME in any multiplayer game.

I'm not so sure it's that great for multiplayer, or at least FFA multiplayer anyways. It does have the potential for more triggers in multiplayer, but its pretty much the exact opposite of a rattlesnake effect. It actively encourages everyone to gang up on you before it actually does anything.
Obviously great once you can get it online, but it instantly makes you P.E. #1 until then.
I expect there to be a mono white control deck show up as a top 8 FNM deck once this set is released. White just has a good chunk of answers for things right now.
One thing that will set Luminarch Ascension back is Esper Charm. 5CC players use it, so do 5CBlood, and people playing the Time Sieve deck may also use it too (if that deck survives post rotation).
LA is trying to be the new Bitterblossom, and it will be responded to apporpriately.

It's a good card, but a simple bounce spell (and this is obviously a great set for them to print Boomerang) or enchantment removal deals with it so well....and the opposing player can just have his way with for those 4 turns that he can play with before he has to deal with the enchantment.
It's not bad though, but it needs to find a home inside a blue permission deck to be viable, imo.

Do you realistically think 5CC can survive post rotation? Without filter lands, vivid lands, or reflecting pool, that seems pretty much impossible. And since the M10 duals aren't fetchable, Zendikar is giving us no real help for 5CC decks.

It can be done. With the ability to fetch for a basic land to put the M10 dual into play untapped on turn 2 (plus thin your deck...always a boon for the control player) it can be done.
I think it will take on more of a planeswalker + Wall of Denial approach though due to the lack (so far) of quality counterspells for top tier Standard decks.

Hmmm. Interesting indeed. I think it will be a sideboard option for monowhite control for sure. Againts control for sure. I wouldplay like 2 at most though. We are loosing a lot of cards for mono white control and unless we get soem sweet stuff back i don't think that it will contend with all the aggro that is flying around the format right now....
I already built one and began testing, it's just like the TurboFog decks that were used last Standard, with Pollen Lullaby and such, yes Angelsong isn't as good as pollen Lullaby, however it provides more use, as a lategame topdeck after you've hit the 4 Quest Counters on the AngelQuest spell you can use it to cycle.
It has many other means of prevention and even "kill spells" with DoJ, a Pseudo Kill with Harm's Way which also "assists" in your use to prevent early damage on or before turn 6 (which is when the deck actually gets online) and it's assorted fat ass type Creatures (even if they're not that big) in the form of the Griffin with vigilance (swing + block, Yes thank you) Blinding Mage (Taps on Demand, thanks much) and the Pseudo Man-Land Gargoyle Castle, and Pacifism to lock their attacking force down until you achieve the AngelQuest. I present...
Admittedly, it NEEDS a Plausible Sideboard to combat the meta (which would be changing soon anyways, but it seems MBC, Goblin Aggro and Elfball will still be around, just much slower)

ok, here's how you could break this in multiplayer... run a ton of land, simian spirit guide, chrome mox, etc. and play it turn one. by turn 2, you'd probably already get a 4/4 out, and keep doing it.
if an opponent destroys the enchantment though, cry and beg all other players for forgiveness cuz they'll all want you dead!.
When I saw this card on the spoiler I was like whatevers. Then someone pointed out that the counters stay on... then I was LIKE OUWH>KASJFLOIQWUDHkiAWJEfh. This card would fit perfect in my angel control deck back in the day

Another possibility that this deck can run some blue for sleep, wall of denial and/or wall of frost. All of em together might be a bit excessive but even 1 or 2 of them can really slow down aggro decks. As big as early creatures are they still have trouble with wall of denial early on as there won't usually be more than 1 attacking creature when it first comes down

From MaRo
Every rarity gets good cards. That means that some mythic rares will be tournament quality as will some commons, some uncommons and some rares. My promise wasn't that mythic rares wouldn't get good cards but that we wouldn't limit the good cards to only being mythic rare.
Bear this in mind the next time a powerful mythic rare is spoiled
Thanks to chaostheory90 for finding this quiz for me
It also works much better against control than with control. I can see it as at least a sidebaord card for aggro or for control mirrors.
I thought the same thing. Luminarch Ascension seems a little win-more against aggro (if you aren't taking damage you've already won, and it doesn't do anything otherwise)... But in a control mirror whoever gets the Ascension going will easily obliterate the opponent.
