Marrow-Gnawer Rata tat tat
I’ve played magic off since high school and only got into EDH (Commander as it’s now called) a few months after Worldwake was released, I think. I’m on a tight budget and was only able to pull together my first deck due to opening a box and pulling a jace the mind sculptor and trading it in for store credit online. Thus my rat deck was made. I went with Rats because it is easy to build and budget friendly for the most part, along with easy to run.
This deck is also created only with cards I currently own, so if it’s not listed then I either don’t own it or it’s in another deck currently. Marrow-Gnawer is chosen because it grants all your rats fear along with the choice of creating tokens.
Lands Swarmyard is going to be your main utility land since it can regenerate your rats.
Creatures
The other cards are chosen with an eye of either getting out as many rats as possible ( Thrumming Stone etc ) or supporting them ( Coat of Arms) and lastly as other creatures. Some cards like Pathrazer were chosen simply because I thought why not and it’s a big scary creature. Royal Assassin’s ability ties into other cards along with being useful by itself. Ob Nixilis, the Fallen is another with an ability that ties into other cards in the deck along with being a creature that can get scary real quick. Now to the main threat Relentless Rats with 30 in the deck and each giving +1/+1 to each other you’re looking at roughly over 40 damage from one rat. Ratcatcher is going to be the main creature tutor due to its ability, it also has fear, so if you chose to you can attack with it. Nightmare is another creature that gets scary real quick along with being able to fly. Pack Rat is another creature that gets scarier and scarier the more rats are in play along with generating copies of its self if you discard a card.
Artifacts Akroma's Memorial will be your main way of granting your creatures protection along with flying and haste. Thrumming Stone is going to be the key artifact since it will roughly 90% of the time allow you to vomit out all your relentless rats. Cryptic Gateway will allow you to put even more creatures out once you have either two rat tokens or two relentless rats. Belbe’s Portal will also allow you to put more rats into play.Coat of Arms is another way to add even more damage to your rats.Torpor Orb was chosen as a way to slow down your opponents decks since this deck doesn’t have any ETBs. Thornbite Staff is going to be how you will be generating infinite rat tokens in conjunction with Marrow-Gnawer and it also pings your enemies which will tie into other cards in the deck. Feldon’s Cane will help you recover from at least one field wipe that targets your creatures by giving resetting your library and graveyard. Nevinyrral's Disk will be your hit everything but lands wipe.
Enchantments Bad moon will give all your creatures that are black +1/+1. Sanguine Bond can help you kill others whenever you gain life off of Ob, or Place Siege, Exquisite Blood. Place Siege has two modes that are help for this deck. The first mode Khans can help return creatures to your hand and then back onto the battlefield. The second mode Dragons as previously mentioned ties into other cards that can kill opponents. Exquisite Blood also ties into killing opponents via life loss caused by other cards, along with triggering due to any life loss. Dictate of Erebos will help you with keeping the board cleared of creatures that your opponents control as you sack creatures to fuel your token generator.Black Market will be able to generate your mana as you sack for making tokens as well.Grave Pact is just another way to keep the field creature free while you make tokens.
Sorceries Patriarch’s Bidding is another way to recover from field wipes, but it does let everyone else also recover. Languish depending on how strong other creatures are can either kill them or severely weaken them. Blood Tribute has interactions with a number of the enchantments. Plague Wind is another field wipe that hits everything you don’t control. In Garruk’s Wake, however hits planeswalkers along with creatures you don’t control. Beacon of Unrest is how Thrumming Stone is recovered if it’s destroyed.Ruinous Path is single target removal that also hits planeswalkers. Profane Command has a few uses, depending on when you use it along with interactions with other cards in the deck.Consuming Vapors depending on which creature you hit can gain you a lot of life along with triggering the enchantments, it also has rebound. Repay in kind should only be used as a way to end the game quickly depending on how low the lowest life total is. Corrupt is another way to gain life and trigger the enchantments.Brainspoil has two uses for this deck targeted removal and it’s tutor ability. Mutilate can kill a number of creatures or at least weaken them enough that you can kill any blockers. Diabolic Tutor will let you search for whatever you need to get the rats out.Duress will help you disrupt an opponent’s hand.
Instants Tendrils of Corruption is an instant speed that will gain life and kill a creature depending on how many swamps you have out. Terror and Doom Blade both offer instant speed removal. Cabal Ritual can give you either 3 black or if you meet threshold 5 black mana at instant speed.
But what about…
As for what’s missing a number of tutors and mana generators, they aren’t included because I either do not own them (for example Vampiric Tutor) or I don’t see a need removing them from decks that better with them. ( for example Cabal Coffer)
