I play in a meetup group where you never know who'll turn up, from folks with slow casual decks to That One Guy with a blazing fast combo deck that utterly dominates the table. I want to build a deck that can keep That One Guy from controlling the game without necessarily being that dominant myself -- because I don't want to be the guy who makes the game less fun for everyone else.
Since I'm not very experienced with EDH, I'm looking for help in balancing my deck ideas. This deck relies primarily on getting Thada unblockable and looting opponents' decks for useful artifacts. Most of the spells are inexpensive, with the intention that my mana will be going toward casting artifacts that Thada steals or churning out weenies made available by card draw effects.
Note that the deck is semi-budget. I have some expensive cards that I got out of boosters, but I'm not going to spend a lot of money on singles. (Though I can look out for trades.)
As a relative novice to EDH, I have to ask some really basic questions. Does the mana curve look functional? Do I have too many or too few cards of various types? You know, basic structural sorts of stuff. Any advice would be appreciated!
Click here for a breakdown of your deck. From what I can tell your curve looks fine but you might want to shave off some 3 drops since that is when you're usually wanting to cast Thada. My Thada list is in my sig if you want to compare notes but my list is focused on winning with just my opponent's cards. I'd think that even with lords the merfolk you run are still too small so maybe you could find something to replace them.
One thing I can always tell a new player is that one-time effects like Ponder and Preordain are almost always inferior to the vast multitude of other blue draw spells out there.
Cosi's Trickster seems pretty weak in this format, even if you manage to get a shuffle effect every turn. Vanilla dudes have no place in this format, no matter how big they are.
