Well there goes the Lantern IQ tournaments, and the Modern Classic Tournaments for that matter.
It's really too bad because a lot of us like to play test and don't want to blow a wad of money on virtual cards. I guess I can go back to making proxie decks, but then I have the trouble of finding a good opponent.
can you still use the deck builder? I like using that both for constructing and virtual deck storage lol
You can use the deck builder and you can use any and all alternative servers that pop up. Currently the popular choice seems to be play.woogerworks.com.
Well, for those of us who already have a client, we can still proxy up decks and play local games against ourselves. Of course, that's not as useful as playing against real people playing an unknown deck, but we were really fortunate to have a working cockatrice server in the first place where we could essentially play real games of magic completely for free.
Honestly, I knew it was only a matter of time. Same thing has happened with so many other games and game companies. I'm definitely upset about it, though. I know it may seem like people were just trying to get away with playing magic for free, but a lot of people who used the program just wanted to test decks out before blowing a million dollars on a deck only to find out it wasn't what they wanted...which is probably why Hasbro wants to shut it down. **** Hasbro. Just another filthy, greedy corporation out to stop anyone who might lose them a couple thousand bucks, which amounts to chump change compared to what they already have.
This is a really unfortunate turn of events. Though I suppose if Cockatrice DOES go under, then new mtg simulators like it are bound to rise up in its place. Though that doesn't excuse Cockatrice being shut down at all. How is Cockatrice any worse than someone just making paper proxys to playtest with? Is Hasbro gonna start sueing people for that too! Seriously their legal department need an outright lashing for not being able to evaluate what's an ACTUAL issue instead of just going "oh it uses our cards, SUE". IF YOUR NOT LOSING MONEY ON IT WHY DO YOU CARE!!!

Luck isn't the only reason I win. Just most of the reason.
There was a big migration to Cockatrice a few years ago. I tried it, but didnt really like it. However, I understand that Cockatrice did support multiplayer games, something MWS doesnt.
And guys, while this does suck, Hasbro is required to defend its copyright claims or it will use them. The motivating factor here isn't to be a colossal dick, it can't choose to defend copyrights in some cases and not others.
I've been using MWS for years. When I heard of Cockatrice, it was through the Lantern tournaments.
Really, the pros of Cockatrice are two different color counters, automatic card pics, and allowing observers.
MWS on the other hand merely has a few buggy crashes from time to time. No different than a ragequit.

And you can update the cardpool automatically. Updating MWS, at least, when i last used MWS was a feat of strength.
Either way, with other servers up, and if they continue the project after getting rid of the things that are illegal, i imagine it won't be much different than it is now.
Hopefully this gets sorted out before DGM releases. I'd like to be able to import that set.
That is all I care about. I've never played against somebody online. I just use Cockatrice to playtest against myself. Used to always have 2 full decks of basic land sleeved up pretty much all the time and I'd tear up 60 little slips of paper (x2) and proxy it that way, and then play both sides. Cockatrice made this mush easier and faster.
No, there is something actually wrong with software that hasn't been updated for several years and can't handle some of the more recent and ridiculous card mechanics correctly. This is why apprentice is even more lol.
Keeping the card database up-to-date isn't too much of a stretch, the card db is just stored in an XML file which you can edit yourself. There is some possibility that this can be maintained by the community.
Sooner or later someone will design a client which allows you to either a) run a server yourself that you can have others connect to or b) make a direct connection with another player. Depending on how it pans out, some form of 3rd party VPN software might have to be used.
Removal of the need for dedicated centralised servers is probably the best way to go to avoid Hasbro coming and raining on the parade.

This. The XML file that Oracle uses to update uses an incredibly simple format and grabs all the information from gatherer. The source code is already being forked by the community.
Man that sucks. I'm able to test out my decks and I find out first that I didn't install Arabian Knights, NOW I got this? Is there any OTHER free program I can use?

Player Rewards, old card frames, cheap redemption fees, pre PWP rating systems, more open Pro Tour, Android MTG apps.
There were riots in the virtual streets every time they took those away, along with the usual cries of "That's it I'm quitting MTG!!!".
