Why was it ban hammered? Its been out for a while..
Well, considering the site says "permanently closed" I don't think it'll be coming back in any amount of time. As for why? I don't think any of us but the site owner know for sure, but it's very likely a cease & desist message was involved.
If thats the case... What about things like Cockatrice, CCGdecks, etc. I mean really, the one SITE that ONLY just allows drafting of the sets has been banned? That just doesn't seem like a right idea to me... I may be wrong, but can someone explain this logic to me? Cause there are SO MANY OTHER SITES THAT ARE WORST THEN THE MTGDRAFT SIM....
I'm surprised that draftsim got singled out here by wizards, there's plenty of drafting sites not well known and uses the latest set to help prepare players for specific drafts, IE: Booster and of course Sealed Deck for prereleases and such, but this is just not right if your going to take away one resource, why not just take away all, just because it's a popular site wizards shuts it down, if that's the case as everyone had said, why not shut down stuff like Cockatrice and the like it doesn't make sense.
Cockatrice isn't based in the US, shutting down infringement in another country is significantly more difficult. (And impossible depending on the country) They'd have to go after the users, which is not something they are willing to do, they'd be effectively doing what the MPAA has been doing with torrent and it would be a PR nightmare.
As for why they did it, you don't have to believe them or have it make sense to you, but there was a non-zero number of people who were only doing free drafts on their computers. Maybe those people just won't draft now, or maybe they'll go and do them on MTGO.
Another option would be to give up the site code/contents to a willing admin who'd move it to a server with some immunity.
/lame move on Hasboro's part to do what it did. Seems like saber rattling. As others have indicated, free publicity and at least a nod to it's fans if they simply left it alone. Tools that help folks with their product is never a bad thing. Will they go after message boards next as folks post pics of cards?
Huh? As I understand it (not a lawyer), you don't lose copyright by failing to take action against someone. You can lose some trademark protections that way, but not copyright, there's no time limit on that. You can sue someone 20 years later for copyright violations.
@Leyasu uh what? Theres no competing at all. Wizards does not offer any kind of practice draft. MTGO actually lets you play with the cards, draftsim did not. If wizards offered a halfway decent draft sim there wouldn't have been a problem or any backlash from the community, but they don't and thats why people are angry.
well you have the wotc "official" sealed deck generator...

Correct me if I'm wrong, but doesn't their simulator just offer the exact same card pool for a few days instead of ACTUALLY simulating sealed/draft?

You couldn't play with the lists, it was purely educational.
