Sweet, the kickstarter has gone past 72k now, double the original goal. Looks like a shoe-in for 80k, since it's adding about $1k per day and there are 16 days to go. That means everybody who ordered a book or print is going to also get a signed and customized Magic proof card. (Not that I'd sell mine, but I believe such a thing would fetch at least $20 on the secondary market, depending on how the sketch turns out, and what card the proof ends up being. I'm just saying, it's no small throw-in.)
If there's a push at the end, it could hit 100k, which would mean everybody would also get a signed and numbered 8.5x11 print
I posted a thread about this in the Artwork forum, but I don't think anybody reads that part of the site - only 15 people have even seen that thread.
If somebody wants to, they could post in Magic general about it, I think that forum is seen by more people. There are a lot of Rebecca Guay fans out there, and since this is the only chance to get the book, and there will only be a few hundred of them made, they've got 2 weeks to make it happen. I'm sure they'd appreciate hearing about it.
Social media (for people with Magic fans on their lists) would also be a good idea.

I was actually thinking about doing that, but was concerned if there would be trouble if duplicate threads come up. That being said, I totally agree that there's definitely a lot more traffic that passes by there than this news sub-forum. Fortunately, this particular thread did bump its way to the top of the page for an extended period of time, which I'm sure has attracted views and contributions. Nevertheless, I'll go ahead and make one because it is crunch time right now.
I've been a Guay fan since I got into the game 15+ years ago. The implied detail (rather than detail explicitly painted), the gorgeous girls/dryads/angels/nature, and the use of bright colours (especially lots of green) turned me into an instant fan even though I've never cared much for fine art before.
When you were dropped from Magic I lead a campaign to get you reinstated, primarily through this community (I like to imagine it had some kind of impact!) We exchanged some emails back then. Persecute Artist is an emotionally-charged bit of history, to me! And I'm very upset at not having seen any new art of yours on a Magic card in years now. Stream of Unconsciousness and Dawnglow Infusion appear to be some of the most "recent"...
Your gallery work since then appears very much like a lot of your Magic artwork, but with more nipples, excellent! The book looks amazing. I never buy myself anything nowadays, but it's the first thing I've wanted for myself in years. And of course, I want to donate to help your project be a success. When I looked into the process to do so, a couple issues come to mind:
- no PayPal / money order option (not everybody has a Visa/Mastercard)
- account signup and verification not only at Kickstarter but also at Amazon.com (where the "privacy" policy is shall we say... not ideal)
I'm working on getting around those issues, so hopefully you'll see my name as a Backer soon. Either way, I'm linking friends to the Kickstarter page, promoting it on social media, and I wish you nothing but the best Rebecca!
EDIT: Success. And I was happy to see that my pledge pushed the funding total over 70,000 - congrats!
I remember this. I was incredibly upset about you (Rebecca) getting removed from magic. I was a part of this as well and figured out Jeremy Cranford's (the art director at the time) desk line. I posted it here and we got a lot of people to call and leave him voicemail. I wish it would have been more successful because I love your art and I think Magic is missing a huge part of its identity without you.

Evil is boring. The universe is friendly. Life is on your side. Joy is your birthright. Cynicism is idiotic. Fear is a bad habit. Despair is lazy. In fact, all of creation wants you to succeed. Act as if the universe is a prodigious miracle created for your amusement and illumination. Assume that secret helpers are working behind the scenes to assist you in turning into the gorgeous masterpiece you were born to be. . . Life always gives you exactly what you need, exactly when you need it.
I don't remember reading anything official about Rebecca's departure from magic. Can someone point me to the correct thread or article about this (tried looking, couldn't find any)? All this time I've been waiting for Rebecca's art to come up in the next set :/

That is indeed sad to hear. Rebecca Guay has produced some of the best artwork in the game of Magic.

I second this; I, also, do not recall there being any official announcement about Rebecca Guay no longer illustrating for WotC; my presumption is that no new artwork of hers has appeared in WotC's product simply because she is not interested in illustrating for them, as tragic as that may be (which surely must also be why Thomas M. Baxa has not illustrated for WotC recently, either, if everyone shall forgive me for mentioning another artist in this thread).

I wasn't there but I imagine it went probably something like:
Wizards: We love your artwork Rebecca, but the nipples are a problem. There are simply too many nipples. Can you tone it down some?
RG: What, you mean like one per bare chest aching with lust?
Wizards: Something along those lines. Listen, don't call us, we'll call you.
And next time we have a fairies block and/or a buff dudes and blond waifs set, we'll see Rebecca again. Which is unfortunate, cause she's awesome and I'm looking forward to my book.

The best theory I can think up agrees with this. Unlike the whole controversy regarding her absence between Legions and Fifth Dawn, her more recent disappearance I feel is more of her own choice. Jeremy Jarvis, the current head art director, adores Rebecca as she was one of his former art instructors IIRC. There's even a picture he showed off once showing them being all chummy and whatnot. And I would disagree with those who would make the argument that her art style wouldn't fit with any of the past sets ever since.
There hasn't been anything specific that I'm aware of, stating why Rebecca hasn't been in any Magic artwork for the past few years.
It definitely isn't because her art style wouldn't fit in any recent sets. She was used in basically every set, and then just suddenly dropped. It wasn't like she ever had to sit out a block let alone several in a row. This is a decision on somebody's part. I just don't think we know who.
Anyhow, pledges have now passed 83k! 12 days left to go, and averaging about 1k per day.... so that 100k level is possible. Then everybody who is getting shipped something will get a bonus 8x11 signed and numbered print
100k, wow. So everybody who pledged (or pledges) enough to get a book will get an oversized print (numbered and signed) and an altered artist proof card, it seems.
5 days remain
Phew, got a little nervous because my payment was rejected, but it's all fixed now
Now the long wait until August begins...

My guess is that it would cost you more than you'd be ready to spend. I participated in the kickstarter campaign and would not even consider selling my book unless the offer would be really out there. I'm talking in the thousands. I did not order the book to speculate and given its rarity, selling it would mean never having access to it again. That is worth more than I suspect people are ready to pay.
I think she plans to sell it outside of Kickstarter at her art events (which don't really include MTG events anymore), but not enough that it'll be particularly easy to find. She does link some of her books to Amazon, so maybe she'll put out a few there.
Nope, she said the book will never be for sale on Amazon, or anywhere else for that matter. She said she would have a few dozen personal copies with her at big events, and that they might be available as gifts, prizes, or MAYBE for sale to the right person.
But no, if you didn't get a book for $70 already, you won't be getting one at all unless you know Rebecca personally or have BIG money to shell out on the secondary market. I believe there are going to be about 600 copies in existence. There are a lot more Guay fans than that.
I spread the kickstarter far and wide while it was open, knowing a lot of people were going to get left out and be disappointed

That is terrible! How can she do that? Why is she not making the book more readily available?

How can she do what, exactly? Decide how many copies of something to make and sell? If you're asking something else, please clarify.

I am asking why Guay is not making her book available through Amazon.com, Barnes and Nobles, or another widely-used retailer. From what I understand in this thread, the only ways to obtain the book are either by contributing to the Kickstarter campaign or attending an event at which Rebecca Guay appears, and I do not understand why she chose to do that.

It’s strongly contested by other works, but that Path to Exile definitely one of my absolute favourite pieces of art on a Magic card.
