I know it sounds counterproductive, but perhaps the idea is to schedule a GP with less pros in it. I'd still like to see them give the guys who scrub out and are 0-3 after 3 rounds to drop and play in the GP, so making it happen on D2 is perfect.
I can't see them doing the PT on Thursday.

Thursday PT day 1
Friday PT day 2
Saturday GP day 1
Sunday GP day 2/PT t8.
Other than the GP/PT thing I HATE this schedule.
Why the hell does california get its THIRD PT in a row? Why does Paris get its 3rd(4th?) GP in row?
Also no Fourth PT is bull. How many record breaking years does wotc need both in tournament attendance and sales before we see the tournaments actually get true expansion. Better be some money increases on GPs.
Since 2005 GPs have actually become less worth playing in(cut 5k from the amateur award) yet MTG is doing amazingly....

well the Pro Tour and Grand Prix are more of a commerical for magic than anything esle.
Why does californa get its 4th pro tour and paris get it 3rd in 4 years. Population.. sorry there will be Pro Tour Kailmuzzo EVer. LOl.
Form a Business standpoint in makes no sense to go back to 4 PTS a year. Wizards most likely loses money on every Pro Tour, and is looking to make its money back through people hearing about the Pro Tour and buying packs and starting to play.
From a player presective i see your point. but WOTC didnt make this game so (you the player could make money) they did so they could make money.
Anyone else think that these Infect decks will be incredibly susceptible to Planeswalkers?
I will relish the first few weeks when my opponent swings this or the other Infect baddies into my Jace 2.0 and I say "ok no blocks" and they look at me dumbfounded as I lose no loyalty and gain no poison counters.
I'm sure noobs will catch on quickly but I know the above situation will happen.

Way to make assumptions. I live in texas, the second largest population in the US, I actually dont want a local PT I want them as foreign and interesting as possible.
Furthermore I rarely if ever play the PT, I am not a pro by any stretch, however we used to have 5 pts and it was implied would be getting another soon.
i actaully argee with you. Now I know Texas has a good poputailon, and they had PTS there before. Im sure you'll get a GP when those are anncounced. I argee with u on the forgein. I aslo mostly play in FNMS, and very rarley play in PTQs, but I was going to play in event to win a plane ticket somewhere I want it to be Paris, or japan.. or such. No offesne but playing in a tourament to win a plane ticket to Austin doesnt excite me. Maybe they were be a 5th pro tour stop one day. but still the pro tour has to be come out of Wizards marketing budget, it has to be a loss for them.

It's advertising. That's not a loss, that's investment. Pro plays a card, people say card is good. People need card so they go to store. Store opens packs until card is found for people. Wotc makes Mad Bank!
I think the $$ pool needs to go up esp at GP. I'd like to see first place take home at least 10k.
A lot of that extra money has likely gone into the PT Players Club with all the "appearance fees" and extra airfare which isn't cheep. This is one of the few competitive events where the host company is paying for travel. In most events the sponsor companies (ChannelFireball, SCG et) would be paying for plane tickets.
How much do those guys get paid to rock a shirt anyway? (Or is it part of thier writers agreement w/ the site).

Yes cardfather.. I understand... I just meant that Pro Tour in itself is a loss. And people who are calling for a fifth stop... i wouldn't object.. I just meant that WOTC would have to look at from "would a ffith stop bring in enough xtra reneuve that offset the loss we would be taking in adding a fifth stop" i dont know that answer, But WOTC would have consider that before adding more stops.

maybe you are newer? We used to have 5 PTs(6 sometimes), it was cut a few years ago citing budget issues. As was the 5k "amateur" prize at all GPs. Now we have GPs that are taking in 70k in entry fees and only paying out 30k. Our tournament system has become a joke...
Look at poker, they became big by... throwing huge tournaments with lots of money involved... might be a reason for that. Honestly I dont want anything near me... Now Im going to sound really dumb here but in Poker the prize pool isnt preset like at GPs. Depends on how many people then the house usually take a rake 10 to 15% . So How many attend Grand Prix and pay 40 bucks.. in otherwords.
In otherwords whats the Rake? (I really dont know)

The rake from entry fees isn't that great when prize payout and price of venue is considered. Side events, dealer fees for tables etc. push it over the edge
I really hate poker comparisons since they can price it that way because it's gambling.
With that said. How big is your average amature poker tournament? I know people around here that can win 600-800 on a friday night at the Hard Rock Casino which is fairly small potatoes. How does that compare to your FNM?

pretty bad... And i wasnt the one who made a the poker comparsion. I was just wondering at Grand Prix.s what the ratiot was between total entry fees and total pay out

you honestly don't know how expensive it is to run a large magic event, heck even most Event Coordinators wind up losing money for something as small as a Regional Pre-release. you have to rent out a large conference center for 2-4 days at somewheres around 2-3k per day. you have to pay your judge staff, cover travel expenses, etc. Now granted I know for a fact Judges don't make that much, but they are deffinatly not working for free on that floor. If Wizards\DCI\Sponsoring Coordinator make more than a 2-3k off of a Grand Prix or Pro Tour stop then they're either lucky or got some mad discounts.
Look at poker, they became big by... throwing huge tournaments with lots of money involved... might be a reason for that. Honestly I dont want anything near me... Prize Payouts for Pro Tour\grand prix are actually better than Most WSOP events. The difference here is that the entry fee\buy-in is 0-40$ at magic events while the WSOP ranges from 1k to 10k. Which is what alot of people don't realize about these Poker events with multi-million dollar prize pools, is that it costs the players thousands of dollars just to enter.
actually cardfather those benefits have been severely cut from a few years ago. The pro club costs very little when you consider almost no one is actually high enough to get much out of wotc.
Level 5-6-7-8 are the ones where players get payouts Level 5 gives a player 250$ any time they attend a PT or worlds, This Level membership is lifetime guaranteed to any member of the Pro Tour Hall of fame, this level has 49 players. so at any PT events wizards can expect to be paying out $12,250 to Level 5 participants. This level is also achieved by simply winning a pro tour event. Level 6 gives player 1250 for attendance to a PT or worlds + a travel voucher to 1 event a year. this level is obtained by getting to 30 pro points, which is simply just a string of top 8s (including GP's and nationals). there are 17 players on this level so wizards is paying out $21,250 + airfare level 7 Grants players 1750 for PT or worlds + Travel to ALL Pro events + 250 to show up to grand prixs there are, there are 3 players at this level and next year each one will get 11500$ + 4 travel vouchers from wizards Level 8 Pays 2250 + air + hotel to all pro tour and worlds events. also pays 500 to show up to a grand prix, there are 8 players on this level and wizards can expect to pay $18000 in cash plus Travel expenses to each of these players all told wizards next year will pay out almost a quarter-million in benifits to it's pro player's club. Wizards is feeling out the line between player satisifaction and profitability. but to insinuate that wizards is just hoarding profits given what they actually do is nieve at best.
pretty bad... And i wasnt the one who made a the poker comparsion. I was just wondering at Grand Prix.s what the ratiot was between total entry fees and total pay out
Entry fees for a Grand Prix are 40 for limited events and 35 for Contrsucted Grand Prixs. there are about 1000 players that show up so 40 to 35k brought in from registration. the following is the prize payout for grand prix's regardless of attendance
so that's $30,000. These events are held because the local Event coordinator covers the costs of renting the tournament space (not cheap), and paying judge fees (not too expensive, but not free either).
I would still imagine that a event coordinator is still making at least 1k off of each large event. That is still 1000 dollars or more for a weekend to maybe even a week of stress. To me that seems very VERY profitable and worth it. I know large event halls can be kinda expensive but for Pre-release events where no prize support is out of pocket, it seems to be a total cash cow. For a GP or PT I could imagine it would change a bit but not a significant amount when you factor in what they make from a pre-release. It would amaze me if there were different event coordinators for large reginal events and large pre-release's in the same area.

You honestly dont know what I know, so probably not wise to go there. Couple of things, one comparing regionals to say a subsidized GP is ridiculous, who cares if the local tourney with 200 players lose money(most dont btw) when a GP is taking in well over 50k in main event entrees, and 10s of thousands in side events.
The main thing I missed on the club was they changed the HOF. Originally when they cut the hell out of events being HOF only got you level 4(qued for everything, but no money) had no idea they had changed it again.
Also its not naive, its fact go look up their earnings reports. Hasbro is literally sitting on 3/4s of a BILLION in cash, whereas much larger rivals like mattel are only at about 500 million, and compared to most other similar sized companies even mattel is hoarding serious cash.
