Hello everyone. I'm very new to magic, I don't own a single card. My question is what is the best way to get a quick deck for use in standard. Now I'm not looking for anything very expensive I just want something I can play with friends casually until I know what the hell I'm doing. I've heard event decks and toolkits, what do you folks think? Any advice would be greatly appreciated.
Wizards releases a few different products:
- Booster Packs
- Event Decks
- Intro Packs
- Deckbuilder's Toolkit
- Duel Decks
It sounds like you're looking for an Event Deck or Intro Pack.
Booster Packs are the 15 card packs, designed to expand a collection or use for Limited Play (such as drafting).
Event Decks are designed for people who want a semi-competitive deck. They're standard legal and the idea is that you can buy one and immediately start playing at an FNM event.
Intro Packs are casual decks that are more flavorful than competitive. They're still great for new players. And are generally an 'introduction' to a set, usually each based around one of the set's mechanics or color combinations.
Deckbuilder's Toolkits are designed for new players to immediately expand the number of cards they have. It's generally a lot of common and uncommons, but it gives you plenty of the base cards you need to build decks.
Duel Decks are flavorful casual decks, designed around a theme of Planeswalker vs Planeswalker or Faction vs Faction.
What are you looking to do? Do you want to play at a game store against other people competitively, or are you just looking to have fun with your friends?
