I'm looking through SCG's store and I'm finding that nearly all of the volatile cards, the ones that fluctuate with the meta, are all out of stock. Most of them are at all time lows right now, and as BNG gets spoiled the values of these cards look to rise.
Do we really think that SCG is out of these Standard staples, or are they claiming out of stock so they can buy at the low prices and sell for a marked up amount?
Curious indeed.....
We're super-backed up on processing cards right now. This is due to company growth, and a need to hire more people in house to sort/grade/enter/file cards. See http://careers.starcitygames.com/ - under Inventory Assistants for more information. I think we were hiring for twelve (yes 12!) people to work sorting/grading/filing cards right now, and only about half those positions have been filled so far.
If anyone's looking to break in with SCG, this is a great position to show us your stuff! A large number of people have shown their hard work and dedication sorting/alphabetizing cards, and moved on to higher positions with the company (including three departmental managers).

Or they could be legitimately sold out at the moment, due to speculation from their customers (or just normal demand from their huge customer base), and just haven't gotten around to getting them restocked or are waiting on more stock before they can restock them online. No need to assume or speculate otherwise unless some evidence would show such a thing.
SCG runs several high level national tournaments almost every weekend, their prices are going to be higher because they will need to buy the singles at a higher price so they can have them in stock for customers at their tourneys. Cut them some slack here. Their demand is higher than most other major MTG online stores due to this fact. However I understand why people certainly think this but I just don't buy it. The MTG business is booming and they only have so many employees and as Ben stated above are now actually hiring. So that being said they do great job. Certainly people like Ben and others at SCG know that players can get them cheaper elsewhere but again its about them keeping the key cards in stock for customers who go to their weekend tourneys. I've experienced nothing but good things from SCG.
Did you guys see this? A store is ripping off your logo and name and possibly selling fakes.
Wow, that is just beyond pathetic. The sad thing is, people who are foolish enough to buy these cards thinking they are real, will likely then blame/bash star city games assuming that its affiliated with them, even though it obviously isn't. Someone seriously needs to find a way to shut those scammers down.
i wanted to make known a situation i encountered this weekend at scg stl. when i showed up to the event and went to pick up an order (which had been setup for event pickup at scg stl) i had placed i was told that they didnt have my order with them. after a brief explanation of what probably occurred, and how it had happened to around 15 other players as well, i was less than pleased. considering a few of the cards i had ordered were intended for my legacy deck for play this weekend i was even less happy. the sales attendant that worked with me (david beckner) was extremely apologetic, helpful, and understanding in dealing with the situation. he allowed me to vent and then took the time to come up with the best solution possible. that solution was to give me the choices of 1) refund my money, 2) fulfill the order to the best of their ability with the stock on hand, 3) shipping my order to me along with a refund for the cards shipped as a form of making amends (the refund part ended up being removed from this option), and 4) a mixture of the previous 3.
now those were all options with differing pluses and minuses. for starters i didnt want a refund, i wanted the cards i purchased. as for option 2, the problem was quite a few cards that i ordered were extremely niche or just werent stocked onsite. option 3 had the problem of not giving me the cards i needed to play in this weekends events. all around the options were an effort to make things right, but at the same time the options didnt do enough. i know, at that stage of the game there wasnt much they could do, but how does this problem even happen. i get that an order might slip through the cracks from time to time, but 15 or more orders getting forgotten?
again, i would like to mention how helpful and professional mr. beckner was in helping me through this situation. with my order list in hand he was able to put as much of it together from the on hand stock as was possible. i also chose to have the rest of the order shipped as well as i still want the cards i purchased. unfortunately this cost me the ability to play in this weekends legacy events. while working through the issue i missed the cut off for the legacy side event and while i was able to get most of the cards i needed, there were multiple one ofs that were unavailable leaving my deck incomplete and keeping me out of the legacy event tomorrow as well. i can only be thankful for the fact that i live locally as i can only imagine how bad this situation would have been if i traveled any amount of distance for this event as many do.
all in all this has been an extremely unpleasant experience. i appreciate the effort that was made in improving the situation and in the damage control. star city is known for their excellent customer service and i think they tried their best in this situation, but i still question how this could happen in the first place, and not just to one person, but multiple people. its nice to see the effort made in correcting the situation, but i would have preferred to see that effort put forth in keeping the situation from happening at all.
Thank you for the feedback here. David brought this to our attention back at HQ as soon as it was realized and we've already spotted the extremely bizarre technical issue that caused this. We'll be offering Free Shipping to any affected customer along with something extra. You will be contacted by our team shortly about that.
We agree with your points of course. This should never happen and it's very difficult to correct things after the fact. This is the first time something like this has ever happened and we've eliminated the problem that caused it.
I apologize for this disappointing situation and assure anyone reading that it's an isolated case, already resolved, and thus not to be expected in the future.
Please feel free to contact me directly if you need anything (anyone)!
Wanted to say that I was pleased with a recent deal I had with SCG.
I put in a sell request for $1100 worth of cards (about 25 cards.) Although they said it would take 2 days for a response, one didn't come in until 4 days, but they apologized for the delay, then a day later verified my list. I sent them the cards on Wednesday, they got them on Thursday, and they paid me via Paypal today. They graded a few of the cards one grade lower than I had, but they were borderline cases, and I figured that would be the case. After the initial delay, the communication from the guys who work as buyers were quick, clear and answered all my questions.
Do you guys no longer give 25-30% more in credit from buylists? I don't see it anywhere on the buylist page.
If you are on the buylist page, click on the "Here's How" link towards the top of the page and it will take you to the page which mentions how to format sales to them, including mention of the 25% trade bonus :).
Thinking about purchasing a high end foil from SCG. I typically go with SP, but MP is $50 cheaper, and would like to know what people's experiences with MP grade from SCG are? Thanks.
I typically don't write reviews for things that I purchase but I was extremely happy with my order from SCG. I work in sales so I know it's nice to hear the good things every once in awhile instead of a steady stream of complaints.
In any case, on 4/12 I placed an order for two MP Show and Tells and a MP Sneak Attack. With any other vendor the cards pictured above would be classified as SP or EX at the very least. Please give yourselves a pat on the back and thank you for the great service, price, and quality of cards.
I've found that SCG has a highly stringint (sp?) grading process. Ive gotten warped foils and non-foils for 30-50% off.... and be warped, I mean something that an hour under a heavy book fixed.
Its what you pay for here. You pay for the quality of service and pay for the piece of mind that SP/MP means "Eh, we noticed a defect under an electron microscope."
Too be fair though, they probably see enough cards that pinching pennies on grading isnt as much. Yea, they could of gotten that extra amount for it, but alas, they want to give the customer a card thats better than advertised.
So, I have a minor issue with an order I got from SCG, it's not exactly their fault, but I'd like to know who I talk to about this kind of thing.
I bought their only copy of the Japanese Commander 2011 Political Puppets deck, box looked fine on inspection, I opened it up, box with the cards looked fine.
Once I opened that box, and opened the shrinkwrap, I noticed that a small chunk of cards was damaged.
Luckily, it wasn't horrible, just about 8 islands were damaged, but part of the reason I bought the deck was for the basics (I'm a foreign card lover, I can't help it)
I can't exactly call up Wotc customer service, since the deck is out of print.
I can't blame SCG for not opening a sealed product, they didn't make the cards and unopened is typically more desirable.
Just kinda disappointed I can't use the Islands.
Overall, a very pleasant experience (came VERY quickly as compared to previous priority mail packages)
Just wondering what my avenues look like. I can't exactly afford to buy another Japanese Commander deck. I haven't had any luck finding foreign basics on the website either.
I've attached a pic for clarity, the top lefthand corners are bent and creased. The pic is in the spoiler

I placed my first order with SCG last week for some foils. Their prices were actually significantly below average for these cards and they showed up on time. Pack fresh with a nice note on the receipt. I will be looking to SCG for my bigger purchases and when I want to guarantee I am getting NM cards.

How much is the employee discount?
When selecting M10, M11, M12, M13 & M14 in the "Set(s)" field, cards in M12 are omitted in the search results.
Will have our web dev guys look at this on monday!
