For MtGO: In general, when is a good time to sell foil mythic rares? Does their value typically go up, down, or stay the same in the year after release?
I only play drafts on Magic the Gathering Online and I sell cards to bots for more tickets to play in more drafts. I have been lucky to draft 3 black foil mythic rares from Origins in the past couple of weeks and I am wondering if I should keep these cards for a while -- or even a long while if their value is likely to go long term -- or if I should just go ahead and sell them. If their value is likely to stay the same or go down, then I would just sell them now.
It depends on playability. If the card will see long term play, it'll slowly rise over time. If not, it'll probably stay stable while the set is drafted and then slowly climb until the set can no longer be redeemed. Afterward it'll probably decrease in value. This is general since you didn't list the 3 cards. Foils aren't really popular on MTGO, so most of the price of foil mythics is tied to redeeming foil sets.
You can always plug away at mtggoldfish to get an idea of the life cycle of similar cards.
The time that foil mythics are best to sell is when redemption demand most exceeds supply. So after drafting (mostly) finishes for the set but before redemption demand dries up.
Often crap mythic foils hit their highest value 3-6 months after rotation, but this is not always the case.
