After a glorious and no-doubt righteous performance in std format mutavault has lost a good chunk of popularity and its importance for current meta of eternal formats has been reduced significantly. Present price for m14 mutavaults is about 4,5, for morningtide ones - about 6. I have been considering to buy a pile of mutas with an expectation to see them going up again maybe in several months, however i am not still sure if it is worth buying them now or probably wait. I highly doubt they will sink more (current price is pretty much at the bottom, both historically and locally), and there is a solid chance we can see AV being unbanned in Modern in 3 weeks, so faeries will become a contender again. What you guys think? Is investing in them a good idea? Happy New Year everyone
It's fine, since you're buying at the bottom and it should go up over time since it's playable in modern/legacy/vintage. However if you think AV is getting unbanned, you should invest in AV.
I think they'd unban blood braid elf before ancestral visions. Visions is really hard to new players to understand and interact with. At least with treasure cruse they can bring in cards like rest in peace.
Ancestral vision will at least double if it gets unbanned. Look at bitterblossom, it went from 28 to 50 and people were buying it before the ban announcement.
AV is still a solid EV but high risk speculation. If it's not unbanned this time, just hold it three months and pre-B&R announcement speculation will repeat, as it is one of the most plausible unbans in the format.
As for Mutavault - it's a core set rare, from a set more heavily opened than M11 or M12 (and also with a small number of extra Morningtide copies), and it sees less play in Modern than other core set fringe cards like Phantasmal Image ($2, minor player in some Pod lists) and Serra Ascendant ($3.7, key player in Martyr and also has casual appeal), despite those having roughly equal print runs. I think it's only held value due to price memory and is presently still overpriced.
However, it will always have potential if some future set pushes monocoloured strategies in Modern, and if it does rise it will soar.
I think your overall estimation of Mutavault is correct. Considering AV one thing perplexes me: it seems that wizards are inclined to introduce major changes in BnR list on the eve of Modern Pro Tour, and holding AV for several months after its not unbanned (suggesting) doesnt seem great to me. AV is very plausible card to be unbanned though and i have stocked some with huge expectations
I think the idea that Cruise is ok so AV is ok isn't quite right.
I think it's more like Cruise is not ok so AV is never ever ever getting back together.. or coming off the list for that matter.
On topic, I like Mutavault. I'm not in for more than a playset, but it's kind of like Caverns in that regard.

Out of the blackness and stench of the engulfing swamp emerged a shimmering figure. Only the splattered armor and ichor-stained sword hinted at the unfathomable evil the knight had just laid waste.

In what sort of circumstances do you see demand for Mutavault increasing? Like I stated, Serra Ascendant and Phantasmal Image have almost equal print runs, and are played more in both competitive Modern and casual games, yet neither has the pricetag of MV.
You could have bought visions on December 29th for 5.2 and sold it at the peak for 7.2, so that's a 1-2 ticket profit depending on what you sell it for.

I was wondering why ancestral vision went up in price since it's not playable in legacy anymore, yeah it's crazy modern speculators.
